What else is good besides FF14? That's the only one I hear about.

Lots of fanservice for preexisting fans of Final Fantasy, mid-high skillcap but still very achievable skill rotations for every class, solid raids and dungeons, minigames, nice fashion options, social environments if you're a flaming faggot who chugs copious loads of semen every day, cute lalafells and PvP that is so niche that it might as well not be in the game.

Its pretty fun.

Since you homos necro'd this thread,

Has anyone played New World yet? If so, what are your thoughts?
Been enjoying it but the content is so fucking repetitive. It was meant to be a sandbox but now it's a theme park with no content. They have dungeons but I don't know how you can have meaningful PvE with 6 abilities. I enjoy the skilling content though kind of reminds me of runescape but not as good. I still think it can be a good game if they add something to actually do besides kill and collect x. I haven't tried pvp but maybe that can save it.

like @Seasoned News Reporter said ESO, not perfect but does a lot of things right after they re-enacted TOR in their first year, then turned their shit around to the point it feels like they're the only one innovating (or at least making meaningful QOL improvements) instead of following the same shitty formula established by WoW in 2004 - even FF14 is guilty of that.
that set collection stickerbook is pure fucking genius in so many aspects.

secret world is worth at least a solo/online coop play-through for the atmosphere alone.

there are probably a few more, non-mainstream underhyped niche MMOs tend to have a more tight-knit playerbase too where the big ones act as a filter.

I don't know how you can have meaningful PvE with 6 abilities.
eso has 12.
gw1 did it with 8.

amount of skills are only part of the equation anyway.

I'd like to throw another hat in the ring for that shin megami tensei private server. It's an old mmo that shut down because aeria games is gay as fuck & makes everything pay 2 win. The changes in the private server are nice since you can use golden apples you get from dungeons to power level yourself & your demons. Plus the premium currency is earnable in dungeons. They charge you for nothing. Also you can get server code & make your own server if you want.

Seconding the Secret World and also recommending Star Wars the Old Republic, both can be treated as giant single player rpgs with the right character build. TOR is more cash grabby these days but the player storyline and companions are entertaining. SW probably has the best lore and atmosphere in an mmo, shame the combat is so janky.

Major development for Firefall fans and Mark Kern haters

THE BUS HAS BEEN LOCATED

MORE IMPORTANTLY it apparently may have ALL the server stuff on it, including an unreleased client build. An enterprising Firefall fan was able to negotiate with the place that was going to scrap the bus in order to get his grubby hands on any hard drives that he could find. He has been able to extract the hard drive of a couple of the player PCs.

Currently the main server remains on the bus because
its a FUCKING UNIT
1769890152532.png
and because of the state of the BUS it is currently inaccessible to him.

The Melding Wars, originally a self described datamining group has since turned pivoted to reverse engineering the game and running their own private server. Ross would be proud of their game conservation efforts. They are apparently looking over what data has been managed to be extracted from the accessible hard drives.

Mark Kerns fucking asinine, retarded, financial BLUNDER may ironically be the thing that saves this game from being relegated to its place in history as a tragic, mismanaged failure.

Fuck, that takes me back. Used to have the poster from the pre-order pack hanging over my PC. Also some kind of tiki mask in game? I remember everyone wearing tiki masks at launch.

Also some kind of tiki mask in game?
The super duper founder edition had a tiki mask with some sort of purple particle effect, a poster, and a beanie iirc. The lesser ones were green I think, and then maybe like a basic wood one? Its been a minute. There was also the giant motorcycle, wasn't that a founders bonus too?

I don't really understand this part. If the bus is getting scrapped anyway, why not why get to the unit yourself with a hammer? There's no need to carry out the entire thing, people are only after the software.

The latest info I have is for 1/27/26

For the moment, the scrapping is on hold due to other jobs taking priority.

The problem is the pretty major structural damage that's getting in the way. He says there's a hole in the roof of the bus (pic 4 of my previous post) he may try to widen and crawl through which may grant access to the server. The other problem he may run into is that the drives are only accessible from one side of the server and its not certain how exactly it was placed in the bus.

ASSUMING the server is in there AND everything is intact AND recoverable and wasn't running by some goofy proprietary RAID setup.

The guy says he is gonna wait 2 weeks and check back in and go with the roof-hole plan at that point if there isn't a better option available. In the meantime hes continuing to extract the PC drives.

Found it. I only shelled out for the Lieutenant founder pack so I missed out on the beanie. Permanent xp boost is wild, I feel like that wouldn't fly today at all.

I vaguely remember player transport changing a lot too, like at first there were ground vehicles but then it was jetpacks on your suit, then finally it was just wingsuits with designated launching platforms.

From the perspective of the information and the resources of the time, the Firefall bus was not a totally foolish idea. AA studios were dying left and right. The mountain of MMO corpses was piling up. Facebook had diminished interest in MMOs. Netflix was eating into people's time. The cost of living had gone up and consumer expectations for videogames had gone up, meaning that if you didn't want to make a pathetic indie kickstarter game like Camelot Unchained or Shroud of the Avatar, then you needed big corpo money who want a return on investment. That means you have to somehow go big in an era where user acquisition was becoming very difficult and expensive. Etc. Rather than following the lemmings into the meat grinder, it made sense to try a radically novel approach. Gimmicks are a good way to gain attention. BG3 went viral because of the gay bear sex. Ofcourse, hindsight is 20/20.

In a vacuum, having a extremely heavily branded vehicle that you can tour around and play the game with is a pretty cool idea. The problem is all the bullshit surrounding it.

It was supposed to be an ESPORTS bus where teams would get in and play competitive Firefall...which no one wanted. This was during the transitional period where stupid publishers were pivoting from ”We need to make the next WoW/TF2/COD killer!” to ”Our game has to be ESPORTS ready!”. So for whatever reason, Kern decided to spend a lot of time and effort into making Firefall a competitive PvP game. No one wanted this and the bus was a giant slap in the face to pretty much the entire playerbase.

Another problem was that it wasn't even street legal. You couldn't drive it. That was one of the major reasons there was drama between Red5 and WCC.

The last problem was it was just another sign of Kerns reckless spending and susceptibility to feature creep. Not only did he buy a $3m bus for ESPORTS (which was used like 1 time) but also spent ungodly amounts of money on professional cameras and all the other bullshit to set up their own version of SpikeTV. I hardly remember anything about it because I had zero interest in it. I just wanted to call down thumpers.

TRAGIC FIREFALL BUS UPDATE
(something Firefall fans are quite familiar with)
Unfortunately the server drive was nowhere to be found.
Rip major update so sorry but the server doesn’t seem to be there. I was able to make the whole bigger to get a better look. I even made sure to look at the bottom just in case it fell but I don’t see it. I will take another look and I will look again when they get to that part of the bus during the demo ! I will still harvest the rest of the drives I can get to though! I am sorry folks! 😭😭
