I watch a lot of MMA. It’s all I want to do on weekends. I see a lot of Herb Dean and Dan Miargliotta in other promotions and I get the feeling neither one of them want to ref UFC events. Herb, in particular, is attentive… and dare I say… ‘good’ at his job when he is refereeing in ONE.

Dan? Well, he does everything and is everywhere. He refs BKFC, Jon Jone’s ‘Dirty Boxing’… you name it, he’s there. I think he sometimes gets the rules confused. I’ve seen BKFC bouts where he has allowed takedowns and elbows when it is a bare knuckle boxing contest. Dan also seems to be the absolute most oblivious to egregious fence grabs wherever he goes.

My candidates for best referees are Mark Smith and Jason Herzog. I know Herzog had a controversial call recently, but given how frequently he officiates, one bad call out of hundreds isn’t bad. Mark Smith is just a by-the-books ref who is always on top of the action and makes good calls. Both of these guys actively train various martial arts too, which I think I why they have an edge over their contemporaries. Herb Dean used to train, but he is getting up there in age (he may still train, I’m not sure). Fighters evolve, rules change, and you’ve got to be able to adapt.
I think you’re forgetting far and away the best ref in existance? The only ref who keeps to the spirit of fighting, the great Mario “blood for the blood God” Yamasaki?

That's the most made up name I've ever heard. You made that name up. Might as well have called him Zelda Mitsubishi.

Sonic Isuzu.

Well, those fight nights were ass.

Anyway, since I'm bored I'll post my hot take in case anyone feels like arguing with me: As much as I love to shit on dagestanis, I think Islam will probably sub JDM.

I think you're right, the way JDM has looked in scrambles it just looks likely that Islam will sub him during it, but it's always so hard to tell how much the weight will matter. It's to consider that someone like Ian Gary weighs only 2 lbs more at WW than Islam does at LW in the cage, though very different builds.

If the Islam that fought Poirier shows up, he's getting knocked out or at least decision'd.

People say that for Islam to fight Ilia he needs to win at welterweight, I don't see how that's the case

If Islam wins at welterweight, you think Ilia is going up to welter or Islam is going back to lightweight? I don't think the former is something the UFC would allow (giving Ilia a title shot at a higher division with no title defenses at lightweight. It would make a further mess of the light and welterweight divisions), and I don't think it's good for Ilia (he is a short guy at lightweight, imagine at welter. Plus 15 extra pounds is not nothing, I don't know if his power would translate very well); as to the latter, why would Islam cut weight for 155 if he is champ at 170? He has other challenges (I would say tougher) at welterweight.

Now, if Islam loses, I think there is more of a chance for him to go back to lightweight, and the UFC would probably give him an immediate title fight against Ilia (both for the money it would make, and Islam being in the good graces of the UFC). This is assuming he doesn't stay at welter, which depending on how well he does against JDM (i.e. he loses a split decision) I think is likely. He has said that he doesn't wanna go through the torture of cutting weight for 155, and I think he would only do it again if a) it goes badly for him at 170, and b) it's for a title shot at 155.

This is all speculation from my part, but for me, the only scenario in which Islam would fight Ilia is if Islam loses this weekend against Jack, which I don't see happening unfortunately.

If seen pictures of him floating around, think he’s sticking at 170. He’s put on weight and 170 is the first bigger jump from 155.

Always the possibility of them just doing a catch weight fight so the fucking belt situation doesn't get all fucking retarded like current boxing. Or retard Dana could make more weight classes which would probably make more entertaining fights.

why is shevchenko the favorite? she is 37 years old (the oldest in her division in fact), she barely won against Fiorot, and she is on a two fight winning streak (loosing against grasso before that). Weili is 36 and has won dominantly against her last 5 opponents (two of which were former champs and "female khabib"), only loosing against rose and some rando in her first fight.
Weili should be favorite going by MMA math. But this is female MMA, so all bets are off

hopefully Dana nukes the female division after this fight

Beneil Dariush missed weight by 2.2 pounds. The fight with Saint-Denis is still on. Dariush forfeits 20% of his purse to BSD.
