He didn't need to learn wrestling; he needed to learn anti-wrestling (hard sprawls, digging under hooks, overhook spin out, lines of wrestling defense). With how Merab trains, blowing him up is pretty much impossible, but if O'Malley found that teep opening in round 2 or 3 instead of round 5, it would have been a much different fight.

Exempli gratia: Izzy is one of the best anti-wrestlers in current UFC. Jon Jones probably all-time best, or Renan Barao.

I'm not well versed in mma but is jon jones a fraud? I feel like anytime I look into his career beyond just being a shitty person he basically seems to have just been fed easy wins dodging anyone who could be a threat and now it sounds like he's basically turned tje heavyweight division into a clown show because Dana can't stop deep throating his cock
 
In MMA adjacent/boxing news. Till has once again blown his chance at getting any kind of money by running his mouth repeatedly about how if he loses to Tommy Fury in a scheduled boxing bout how instead of taking the L, he will head kick him after the fight.

Having said this repeatedly, Fury has just gone “nah, you aren’t fighting me” and now he’s out.

No. Definitely not. He is, however, choosing to hold up his current division by not fighting the #1 contender and rising star, Tom Aspinall, who is white hot and hungry for the belt. Jones is no stranger to controversy, especially over the last few years. If you stick to watching his fights and don’t get mired up in the drama, he’s a really talented athlete. One of the best to do it, bar none.

He is certainly a skilled and intelligent fighter, but I would say that other factors have contributed to his impressive career stats just as significantly, if not moreso. He was lucky with timing, in that when he entered the UFC, he was a lot bigger than that generation of fighters, most of which would probably be competing as middleweights in the current UFC, and were also past their prime. As the competition at lhw caught up with him, he stayed on top through a combination of gifted decisions (Reyes being the obvious example) and lucky breaks (e.g Santos blowing his knees out). After the Reyes fight, he sat out for three years, supposely to bulk up to heavyweight, but more likely because he saw the writing on the wall at lhw, and to duck Ngannou at hw. He then fought and beat Ganne for the hw title, who has no ground game, and insisted on fighting a very much over the hill Stipe instead of the interim champ Aspinall. Add in his long-term ped usage, and IMO, you end up with a pretty overrated fighter whose stats paint an undeserved picture of an all-time great.

Fraud? No. But he is blessed by being genuinely skilled in several areas (trash in others - boxing particularly), being insanely durable both physically and mentally, and very large/long and fighting in two bad divisions. Jones has, for the most part, not really had to change all that much about his skillset over the years (in many ways its declined), this is not because he has a perfect skill set, but because none of these guys in these joke divisions have the skills or attributes to deal with it.

You want a rough comparison for who Jones is lower down with dials messed around - Leon Edwards. Not as durable, defensive wrestling not as good (also something he doesn't deal with at 205 and up except in the much shorter DC) but essentially a guy who fights long behind kicks and single strike punches, and relies on the clinch and his own wrestling if they get past his long range (boxing equally shit). That guy is not anyone's idea of a worldbeater.

Not a fraud, but the LHW division is known for never being really that deep skill-wise, even to this day. So while he had a lot of skill, the opponents were never great.
 
It's also notable that he's allowed to cheat to an extent that other fighters just wouldn't get away with, even accounting for the UFC's shit generally reffing. Every fight he keeps fighting past the round's end, grabs the cage non stop and flagrantly goes for his opponent's eyes. He's allowed to take insane levels of PEDs - I think all UFC fighters, hell all athletes, are on the gas but they at least have to cycle off once in a while and shop for the hideable stuff, while Jones can just go 24/7 on Soviet horse chemicals and get patted on the head by Dana. He's allowed to fuck with other fighters pre-bout to an extent that would get anyone else [except McGregor] shitcanned. Undoubtedly a real deal Great Fighter, but also undoubtedly boosted beyond his abilities by Dana White's weird patronage.
