Barry Manilow was popular in the 70's and 80's. Nobody would bring him up as a safe boring pop star by the mid 90's. By that time he was releasing big band music, concept albums and covering oldies instead of making pop music. It's like me shitting on modern pop and then talking about Friday by Rebecca Black. The writing was literally the weakest part of Dispatch. The ending in particular was embarrassingly trash. Of course people want a sequel, they're horny for more hero seggs and Marvel quips.

Morino could be of Italian or Japanese origin, judging by the simple fact that there are cities in either country named Morino. However, her father does neither look specifically Italian nor Japanese, so it's just wild guessing.
It could also be filipino, and he's noticeably browner than the other characters. I assumed he was supposed to be some sort of mexican, but it wouldn't be entirely out of place for something from the 80s or 90s to include an ambiguously brown person. I don;'t think they're actually supposed to be asian, as that usually would have been more obvious. Of course this is also dependent on the creators having any sense of what media from the 80s and 90s looked like and clearly they didn't... so who the fuck knows.
Nirvana was probably too expensive to license.
There's still dozens of other bands, and hundreds of songs they could have picked that would have made more sense.
