I think Indie is a traditional game dev (and trooning) pipeline by now. It's not the issue with films/books that merely knowing it exists is a task. Gamers know about indie more than most AA/AAA releases.I think the old nomenclature doesn't really work anymore since, as you mention, developers don't really need to rely on traditional publishers to get their game out to the masses, and the A/AA/AAA dichotomy is a clunky and imprecise way to handle it at best.
I guess my understanding of "indie" is any sort of game that is outside the traditional game development/publishing pipeline.
As an edge case, what would you classify the dev of Stardew Valley as? SV itself is obviously an indie game by any definition, but would his next game, Haunted Chocolatier count?
The dev has a personal wealth of at least $500 million, he's rich enough to outright purchase many a publisher. Does the fact he is rich mean his next game wouldn't count as indie?
Also I'll add that lots of indies get government support either through welfare or propaganda, so even the idea of artistic freedom is bullshit.
Haunted Chocolatier will be indie if the credit scenes list 5 people or less without subcontractors. The personal wealth of the people working doesn't matter (though they have the benefit of no shortage of time and money).
