Missing USS Abraham Lincoln Sailor Found Alive
Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Los Angeles Police Department successfully located a sailor missing since the end of May.
Culinary Specialist Seaman Sergio Valoura, assigned to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) did not report to his assigned duties on May 30. After a ship-wide search, NCIS and local authorities expanded the search, a spokesperson for commander, Naval Air Forces, told USNI News in a statement.
NCIS and LAPD found Valoura on June 15 in the greater Los Angeles area, according to officials. He was taken to Naval Medical Center San Diego for a full medical assessment, the spokesperson said in a follow-up statement.
“USS Abraham Lincoln leadership is thankful for the professionalism of NCIS and LAPD in ensuring Seaman Valoura’s safety and well-being,” reads the statement.
Valoura was the second sailor to go missing in May. Seaman Angelina Resendiz was last seen in her barracks on May 29 at Naval Station Norfolk. NCIS found her body on June 9 in a wooded area in Norfolk, according to a NCIS statement.
Another sailor is being held in pretrial confinement in connection with Resendiz’s death, but charges against the sailor are pending. NCIS did not reveal the sailor’s name at the time.
Additional details about the investigation are being withheld while it is ongoing, according to the NCIS statement.
“NCIS has worked tirelessly in close coordination with Navy leadership, the Norfolk Police Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia Search and Rescue, and numerous other federal and local law enforcement partners to pursue all leads since learning of Seaman Resendiz’ disappearance. NCIS remains committed to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragic death of Seaman Resendiz to ensure accountability and justice,” reads the statement.
