Minnesota’s legislature recently asked the State Emblems Redesign Commission to come up with a new design to replace its old flag and seal, which depicts a Native American riding away while a white settler plows a field. So, they opened it up to the people, who could submit their own designs.

The new designs "must accurately and respectfully reflect Minnesota's shared history, resources, and diverse cultural communities," according to the state’s House of Representatives, but "symbols, emblems, or likenesses that represent only a single community or person, regardless of whether real or stylized” are not allowed.

"Public input is vital to the work of the commission and will be sought out both now – at the start of our process—and later—as we narrow down the submissions to five which will receive final consideration,” Democratic Secretary of State Steve Simon, a voting member of the commission, said in a statement. “I look forward to seeing the creativity and passion of Minnesotans shine.”

Several states have redesigned their flags recently, including Utah and Mississippi, which now have new flags, and Illinois and Michigan, which are exploring their own new flag bills.

But Minnesota should be careful what it wishes for, because it just might get another “I Voted” meme out of this — last year, the sticker handed out at polls in Ulster County, New York featured a redesign contest submission by a 14-year-old with a pack of crayons and a vision of a demented spider creature.

People submitted thousands of designs, and more than 2,000 of them are now available to peruse online. A lot of them went the loon route—the common loon is Minnesota’s state bird—but a few stand out as especially unhinged. Here are the ones I’m rooting for, personally:

This breaks every rule of good vexillography and yet, I need it to win.

Does anyone know what’s going on with the laser eyed loons? Minnesotans sound off in the comments.

Simple. Powerful. A weird color. A+

Close the polls. I’ve seen enough. This is the winner.

You can check out all of the submissions yourself on the redesign commission’s website.

Any flag with an animal using laser eyes is probably a reference to a notorious New Zealand Laser Kiwi flag proposal.

There were also proposals for a new state seal, one of which was this:

Not gonna lie, I rather like the hotdish one. About as Minnesota as you can get. But the real star of this article is the "I Voted" sticker that was linked:

All of the current frontrunners are hideous. The old flag was fine, but now there's going to be a hideous purple monstrosity because the idiots in Minneapolis are illiterate and having words on the flag gives them the sads an makes them want to mass rob more stores.

While I much prefer the old flag, Mississippi’s new flag is a good design. Utah’s new flag is an utter disgrace.

What's the problem with the old flag? Is it implying the white settler stole the land and now the indian has to ride away somewhere else? Or does some woke white trust fund kid think it means the indian stole the horse while the white man was busy working?

Just stick the state bird on there and call it a day. No one can get offended because it's a stupid birb.

There are a bunch of retards who complain about it but the main issue is the overly complex seal in the middle that makes it impossible to draw and hard to distinguish from other flags. However a lot of these suggestions who try and "honor the indegenous people" and shit are garbage in the exact same way. The old proposal from 1988 is a much better new flag and should just be chosen.

I disagree, Utah's new flag is great. Mississippi's new flag is also amazing even if they removed the old battle flag refference.

The new Mississippi flag is good, but we were robbed of having the flag of Gondor:

I'm just glad they didn't go with the godawful "Great River Flag," a hideously generic flag designed by some faggot who lives in Boston, not even Mississippi:

They need more Scandinavian influences, since that region was settled by them
A flag idea to reflect the old Minnesota and new Minnesota.

A green and white Nordic cross design to reflect the European Scandinavian settlers of the state as well as the motifs in the old proposed flag people liked and a cyan background with a white star to represent the New Minnesotans.
