I feel like the commander not being able to shoot his gun off the copula is a downgrade, but the APS probably can't be operated with an open hatch anyway?

It's a lot like how many forget the importance of a reliable coax gun or a bayonet lug on a rifle. Sometimes, you just need an emergency weapon that delivers what needs to be done when all else fails.

Rifle bayonets oftentimes pull double-duty as your utility knife as well. Given the retardation that goes on in procurement, they'll think no bayonet lug = no need for a knife either, and then a standard issue piece of equipment becomes something troops have to pay out of pocket for that's not within uniform regs.

There's really only been one consistent item here that everyone's allowed to procure on their own here and that's your utility knife. A Finnish soldier and his knife are the most reliable partnership in the most dire of circumstances. Though, ideally everyone should have the bayonet knife and the multi-use utility knife serving two different roles.

My Type 2 (Polish) bayonet for my AK isn't as good as my K-bar, but it's still useful in a pinch.
 
How would German MBT/armored designs change if they had won WW2? Asking for an autistic project of mine. Hypothetical designs appreciated too.

APS can be operated with an open hatch as the APS system has little blast shields (on Trophy) or is a self contained projectile (Iron Fist)

Note that NERA (Non explosive reactive armor) is said to be more effective than ERA although Russia doesn't use much NERA

They likely would have gone with the E-Series project as the future basis of their armored units. Standardized designs at everything from 10 tons to 100 tons. Though, they likely would have ended up standardizing on the 50 ton Panther replacement as their standard main battle tank as the heavier stuff such as the 75 Tiger replacement and the 100 ton Maus replacement would be not that useful compared to just using a fuckton of artillery to solve problems. As for what features, they were already experimenting with night vision so they likely would have been able to roll out thermals in the 1960's if the electrical engineers at Siemens and Philips were given a free hand to develop as they pleased.

Yep they wee finally moving to standardized designed and not 10 different hulls and running gear for 16 different vehicles.

Nor for something cool, a Ukrainian company has a camera based, AI controlled turret for drone smacking

There's an interesting note in the Air Force budget, someone apparently finally realised that looking into replacing the BUFF with a new bomb truck might be a good idea as we head towards it's centenary:
A Heavy Bomber Analysis of Alternatives will begin in FY27 to analyze the future long range strike requirements to determine future B-52 requirements and costs and/or
a new heavy bomber aircraft configuration and costs.
