I have to be pretty lucky, since I've never really run into the militant vegans. My big experiences with this section of animal rights people mostly dealt with the idiots who would bleat "ABUSE!" at someone playing with their pet or petting them. The closest I ever got to something like this was this one guy who shat on all vegetarians because of these guys. He was not very smart: he thought all vegetarians were vegan, and
thought that fish were like reptiles or something. I don't remember the site and this was years ago however.

The proper term for that is pescetarian or pesco-vegetarian. It's supposed to be the diet associated with lowest overall mortality.

I always thought the impetus behind pescetarianism was moral, not dietary - the idea being that fish's brains aren't sophisticated enough to suffer from distress or fear the way chickens or cows do.

That and commercial fishing isn't generally as objectionable as factory farming (though fish farms have their own problems with pollution and disease).

If you want to be ethical about it, there are plenty of issues there too. Many species are subject to serious problems with overfishing and by-catch. From a health perspective, oily fish are better, but you don't want the ones with mercury, dioxin and PCBs (i.e. the species that are higher up on the food chain).

But this assumes you're rational and concerned with actual issues rather than shrieking about murder.

Mealworms should also be a really solid dietary choice. They're healthy, far more environmentally friendly than meat, and beetle larvae definitely aren't cute enough that you'd empathize with their plight. But they have a little bit of a marketing problem, at least in most of North America and Europe. I don't think eating bugs should be some insurmountable social taboo (crabs are arthropods too, and what kind of fucking weirdo doesn't like crab?), but it's a pretty big hurdle for most people. Tumblr needs militant entomophagist groups to further the cause. I looked around a little bit and the craziest thing I could find was opposed to eating insects. Fuck that, someone needs to go around dumping buckets of live crickets on people.

There are literally dozens of these; I just Googled "PETA vegan" and most of the results were like these.

I know that sex sells, but I love how PETA's main advertising technique is to get female models and celebrities to pose nude while holding vegetables or animals. It makes me think of sleazy cologne ads or any other product where the main selling point is "it'll help you pick up chicks." Because that's totally what a respectable animal rights organization should emulate (obviously we all know that's not what PETA actually is, but still).

OK, gloves are coming off. This statement is patently false.

The human body requires - nay - needs - animal proteins. We are genetically programmed to absorb them. We evolved to fucking use them. Our brains and biological processes fucking require them, to the point where our brains are loaded with fucking fat. Vegans demonize saturated fats and cholesterol, but both are critical fucking nutrients. Your cells can create their own fucking cholesterol. It's essential in creating hormones like estrogen and testosterone. Saturated fats support muscle growth and development and are essential for bone health.

Vegan diets cannot provide Carnosine, which is a nutrient essential in healing. They are infamously short on Omega-3 fatty acids (which come from animal fats), Creatine, Vitamine B-12, and Animal Protein - all of which the human body fucking requires.

Idle note: Do you know how many credible peer-reviewed studies show a study between Veganism/Vegetarianism and better health? Here's a hint: It's the same number of peer-reviewed, credible studies on the existence of headmates and non-binary genders.

And by that I mean ZERO.

All indication - and I do mean all indication - is that the likes of Atkins is healthier and more likely to lose weight for you than a conventional diet.

"But Jaimas!" I hear someone claim with alacrity. "Are there not studies showing that Vegetarian diets can be healthy, too?" And yes, there are. There's a problem with those studies, however: They're observative, not causative. In other words, they demonstrate correlation, and not causation (that the improved health happened during the diets, but were not necessarily caused by them).

In conclusion, eat your fucking steak, assholes.

I was aware that PETA practically runs death camps for animals. This is why their sheer hypocrisy is dripping everywhere, like claiming Pokemon would make kids treat animals like Pokemons. PETA spends all of their money on stupid, controversial publicity stunts and ads instead of using it to fund their animal shelters. Since 1998 PETA has killed more than 17,000 animals, nearly 85% of all those it has rescued. I don't think they even bother trying to find their shelter animals loving homes, which is the entire fucking mission of most animal shelters.
