I would think taking a half an hour to kill one animal would be terribly inefficient.

I remember some crazy vegan chick in my 10th grade English class did an essay on the meat industry and she brought in this video of a pig being slaughtered. It took twenty minutes just for them to kill one fucking pig. The whole time they're practically torturing the damned thing. Half the class is crying, the other half looks like they're about to throw up. Why the teacher allowed this I have no idea. (Especially since this class was right around lunch time) Now that I'm older and I would hope, a little wiser, I'm guessing this video was heavily edited.

There's a reason that instead of outlawing various practices in the meat industry, they instead try to outlaw filming them.

Yeah, those vegan videos are always ridiculous. They just spread misinformation.

I'm a vet, and a big part of the vet med degree is veterinary public health - which includes visiting slaughter houses.
There's a big push to improving welfare at slaughter, and not just for the animal's benefit. If the animals are stressed before slaughter the meat is affected - meaning it's worth less. It's in everyone's best interest to slaughter the animals as quickly and humanely as possible. There's also an official veterinarian working at each abattoir - their job is mainly to ensure the animal is fit for slaughter and the carcass is fit for human consumption, but they also monitor welfare and have the power to shut down the whole abbatoir if standards aren't being met.

That's not to say every slaughterhouse is perfect - like everything, there are good and bad ones, but I very much doubt anyone is taking 20 minutes to kill a pig.

(Disclaimer: am British, things may be/are very different in the US)

If animal rights activists are making the effort to get jobs in slaughterhouses to film this hidden footage then they're going to make damn sure that the footage they get is worth it even if it means purposefully botching a slaughter for that purpose. I grew up in a rural community. I've seen slaughter done professionally and it's a quick and efficient process. None of the shock videos I've seen actually ring true.

The film Food, Inc., hardly uncritical of the meat industry, actually had a fairly complete scene of a farmer slaughtering free range chickens. It wasn't pretty but the point of it was he wasn't doing anything he was actually ashamed of or had any reason to be ashamed of, unlike the practices in many so-called factory farms.

Killing a pig is fast and simple. You cut its throat, let it bleed out (chickens, if there are any nearby, usually drink up the blood), then torch its body to get rid of the hairs. Done. You move on to cutting it up.

Killing a chicken is much simpler. You cut off its head, let it "dance" headless till it finally dies (other chickens drink up its blood as well), then place it in hot water to get rid of the feathers, and cut it open.

...incredibly informative, but now all I can think about is that there's a huge missed-out on market for promoting blood-fed/vampire chicken meat.

I grew up rural and have seen actual food cattle slaughtered with a power bolt to the forehead. The corpse twitches because the brain spasms as its destroyed, but the thing is thoroughly dead. It's a merciful death. When I get old in the nursing home feel free to bring in a power bolt and finish me off. Instant release.

Exposés on abbatoirs are retarded. There may one person out of ten thousand who's a sadist and gets his rocks off from his job, but most workers are listening to their ipods and are thinking about their next break.

Especially when they're brought to you by PETA, which vegans seem to consider an authority on animal welfare, then all of the workers are heartess dickweeds. :sighduck:

Well now PETA seems to be spreading the idea that wool is obtained by killing sheep.
I can't think of a witty comeback for PETA, so here's a photo of a giraffe
Giraffe08_-_melbourne_zoo.jpg

PS I owe everyone here a witty comeback, especially for PETA

I guess humans are killed whenever they go to a barber too with that sort of logic.

This thread reminds me of a conversation high school between two students one of whom was a Muslim and the Other a Vegan.

The Vegan kept on telling us how meat was murder and we should be ashamed of drinking milk wearing leather etc.

They carry on for a while harassing most of the class.

And then the Muslim matter of factly interjects.

'You do realise that animals exist to serve us right.'

This completely changed the tone of the discussion. Previously the Vegan had militantly persued every counter argument, but after Islam was introduced they took on a considerate and balanced tone. The argument ended with the Vegan virtually conceding that Halal butchery was ethical and humane.

You don't just slit a pig's throat unless you've already killed them via electroctution, co2 poisoning or a heavy object. If you even try, the pig will fight back, and they will fight dirty, they'll rip out your throat and swallow it whole. Pigs are ferocious omnivores who can easily digest human bone as well as snacking on any of their own newborn piglets they deem too weak for survival.

Are slaughterhouse workers nice? They must weigh like 350 lbs and be 6'7, that seems like a job that requires a fuckton of brute strength.
It takes brute strength to work with larger animals, slaughter house or not, I'd think.

A man capable of tipping a cow over or doing his job at a slaughter house might not be as bad as PETA would love to have me believe, you know? I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I'm willing to bet they'd pay someone to get the results they'd like to see on film.

Have they argued that having your dog get a haircut is cruel considering they think shearing sheep is cruel? If you don't shear a sheep it's wool will become matted and eventually it will become a painful struggle for it to move.
