Hey kiwi, do you like video games? Do you like big robots? Do you like BLASTER MASTER? How about high quality Super Nintendo-era games that not many people know about and are sooooooo good they make you wish you could transport yourself back in time just to rent it from Blockbuster?

Well look no further than Metal Warriors, one of my favorite SNES games. Ever since I got that 8bitdo modern wireless NeoGeo CD pad in the mail I have spent lots of time playing through old SNES games since the button layout is the same, and recently rediscovered Metal Warriors. I never played it when I was little, but I did spend some time on it many years back and then sort of took a long break from gaming. It's still something really special after all these years.

Here are the things I like about Metal Warriors:

Just look at that intro! Then remember this is an SNES game
From 1995

You can exit your mech at any time and run around as a little guy just like in Blaster Master, and must do so in order to enter new mechs or complete some of the missions - the levels are played out as "missions", detailed and engaging little sorties you must engage in to further the story which is a bit standard(ish) for a mech game but still very cool.

Highly detailed pixel artwork is neat. Here are the 6 rideable mechs in the game:

Metal Warriors has a very fun co-op along with a hidden "basketball"-type minigame for comedic relief.

But my favorite aspect of this game is actually a very small detail about the menus. It is one that I wish every single game with more buttons than just "jump" and "shoot" would have gone with instead of the standard of the time.

Yes, Metal Warriors has the best controls menu in the history of the 16 bit era.

You are given a little window with a mech in it on the left, and to the right are your controls:

In this menu you can select whichever mech you like (they all have various button layouts and each control differently) and set the buttons for each one. Then you can press select to test the controls in real time in the little window to the left, all within your own little special test arena specifically placed so you can get the controls down and play around with the mechs. Literally every game should have something like this. That way, you can get the feel of the sprite you'll be controlling, without going all "trial and error" on the control layouts and resetting and going back and forth between the game and main menu. It's a fun practice arena, too, and gives you a place to move and shoot where you won't feel intimidated by the difficult nature of the main game itself.

The graphics are wonderful and beautiful to look at. Most of the environment is destructible or at very least leaves behind a black, charred, smoking hole when shot. The attention to detail just makes you smile...it's got just about everything you could ask for from a SNES game, just one of those games you can't put down. As I said before, I never played this as a kid. But I really wish I had. I understand it is pretty similar to another SNES title called Cybernator, so maybe check that guy out too.

If you're not so much of a gamer and you just like to watch instead, here is a longplay:

In conclusion, Metal Warriors is really cool and I strongly urge you all to give it a try. Pairs perfectly with the 8bitdo NeoGeo CD pad, as if I haven't shilled for that thing enough at this point. Okay enjoy 🤖

This was the shit. I still play it once in a while.

Guys

I played Cybernator today and it is just a pared down (read: earlier) version of Metal Warriors. Both by Konami, both playing very similar. Think of Metal Warriors as the SOTN to Cybernator's Super Castlevania IV.

BUT

I finally found the song from PEACEFUL SKELETON REALM ATTACKED BY HELICOPTER:

It's the first level music from Cybernator :]

I can't believe this is happening.

Cybernator and Metal warriors come from the same series of games called the assault suit series in Japan. If you enjoy those you'd probably also enjoy Assault suit Leynos or Target Earth in the US which is the first game in the series for the Genesis.

Huh, I recall playing this a little on an emulator way back when. Never did make much headway, but goddamn some of that pixel art is cool.
