Another issue with MGSV that I don't see people mention is the lack of real bossfights, other than the fights with the Metal Gear, but those resemble the robot fights in Peace Walker and like those I honestly found the Metal Gear fights to just be kind of tedious.

Metal Gear was never able to top the boss fights in Snake Eater, the ones in 4 were fairly mediocre, but at least still followed the old formula of a group of specialist soldiers with their own personal gimmick, but then that formula was dropped completely.

Really, the fight against Quiet is really the most challenging boss fight in MGSV, and that's only if you don't know how to fight her. I feel they glossed over boss fight encounters in favor of open world freedom.

The fight with Quiet is the closest it gets to a traditional bossfight and it's pretty good, but wasn't as good as the sniper dual with The End in Snake Eater.

Ground Zeros and Phantom Pain should have been combined into one game. As I felt more atmosphere in Ground Zeros than Phantom Pain. Going by the trailers for Phantom Pain only, it looks like we would return to Gitmo as they showed some American soliders beating up detainees and even shooting on in Cold Blood. Other issue is the so called Chapter 3 business. And the African village scenes were just not shock value enough as the whole world felt depopulated with only soldiers running around. No civies of any type and we couldn't use the Metal Gear we created either. The game was rushed now when I think about it. It had potential to be greater than Witcher 3 but has fallen very short as the years have gone by.

Kojima flat out said that you could return to Camp Omega in Phantom Pain, but it seems that was cut entirely. Which is a shame since I agree that Camp Omega felt more atmospheric than the open worlds of TPP. I never felt safe in Camp Omega; it had a claustrophobic structure which forced you to be in close with guards. You don't really get that with the wide open spaces of Afghanistan and Africa. Sure, the base interiors had that feel, but for 95% of the game you had a lot more space to work with and thus an easier time evading guards. Getting caught in Camp Omega was tense because you had nowhere to run to and you had to think about where you were going to hide. Meanwhile in Phantom Pain, you could just run off to some bushes a mile away and the guards eventually forget about you.

Did Kojima ever give a real reason as to why he sacked Hayter? I think he said they were trying to move the series in a new direction, but then all the returning voice actors kept the same actors in English and Japanese except for Boss.
I always assumed it was Kojima's Hollywood celebrity boner. He wanted to get rid of Hayter in 3 and 4 too and get Kurt Russel. This time he had the money to do it and got Sutherland. I think if David Hayter really turned up and voiced Big Boss at the end of the game a lot of my goodwill for the game and Kojima would have returned.

And Im very fucking curious as to how they will try to break the fourth wall with this guy

There is no way you can do Mantis justice without him breaking the fourth wall somehow (which non MGS fans might just get confused by it)
I'm sure someone else has a better idea than this, but I'd probably have Mantis ask Snake about other movies his actor has been in. Not perfect, but it's the best equivalent I can think of right now.

It would be kinda cool if it were on a streaming service and it checks your recent history and makes vague references to it, like "You like gangster movies, don't you?" "You've been watching a lot of horror movies, haven't you?" And depending on the service, it could directly reference popular stuff the person had been watching.

The Mantis thing is one of those things that really show off the things you can so through videogame/interactive storytelling over straight film/cinema style. I think in a film they should just leave it alone I dont think itd be done well at all.

The skull fights are actually pretty satisfying (especially the counter animations where you use there own sword against them) but yeah Much like the 4 horsemen in Metal gear 2, the camO genome soldiers in MGS1, the tenge commandos in MGS2, the ocelot unit in mgs3, and the Haven troopers in mgs4 at the end of the day they’re just Gangs of four really tough mooks and not individual characters with interesting gimmicks or strategies.

There's a mod for the pc version that adds random skull attacks and it really improves the experience. Especially since they're hostile to the Soviets/pmcs which can cause some large scale chaotic battles.

I wish the game had had scenarios either in missions or the open world where you’d see conflict between the Soviets and Mujahadeen and the Soviets in Afghanistan. Or the PMCs in Africa getting into fights with each other with XOF thrown into the mix from time to time... would’ve made the world feel more alive

But on the other hand breaking the fourth wall is part of what makes Metal Gear Metal Gear, so in order to be faithful to it you'd have to have it in there somewhere, but it'd be a real challenge.

I think you could do it but you'd have to frame a character like Mantis as crazy, so him thinking it's just a movie could be hand waved away in universe as him simply being crazy, much like Deadpool.

My point exactly, they don't have individual personalities or gimmicks.

I love that Japanese trope of "a team of strong fighters with crazy personal gimmicks" you see often in Japanese media like the Eight Devils of Kimon in Ninja Scroll, the Gung Ho Guns in Trigun or the I-Jin in Read or Die that the protagonist has to take on one by one.

I wonder where that trope started? I know it exists as far back as the first Vampire Hunter D novel first published in 1983, but if I had to guess I'd say it's older than that.

That trope even popped up in a Hollywood movie once with the 2005 Elektra movie, shame it otherwise sucked.

I'm sure that was something planned to be in the game originally, but like a lot of things they ran out of time to implement it.

*shrug*

Complete honesty I dont think Metal Gear will work as a movie, or at least not in a way that will please both fans and general audiences. Its presentation is cinematic but the way the story is told is heavily tied to the medium, even more so than other video game adaptations that have failed as films.

I always thought MGS would work better as a show than a movie because that's feasibly the only way you're going to include the whole story without needing to sacrifice anything. At the same time, it wouldn't quite work as a show because shows rely on specific locations and a consistent cast of characters, and the setting of MGS changes from game to game. You could do it, but you'd need a larger than average budget for it.

I've clocked in about 1,000 hours in Phantom Pain. The game is definitely rushed and unfinished, probably one of the most polished unfinished products I've ever seen though. Firstly, the soldiers speak of things like cameras and ATV's getting brought in if you have been active in the area. There are even those missions you can send your MB teams on to counter these, but the cameras and ATV's are never implemented, at best is improved armor and weapons on the soldiers who would normally patrol. My supposition is this was meant to be even further expanded on with Helicopters and perhaps additional road patrols.

Secondly, the entire Motherbase and its systems seem like they were just the base placeholder things, as if it was never really expanded upon. Kojima talked of a much more expansive and customizable MB system, and that never appeared.

Speaking of Motherbase, the Online missions you can take involve the Skulls assaulting the base, indicating there was meant to be some further storyline involving them, as well as Quiets storyline seemingly being cut short. Not to mention other smaller storyline oddities.

Kojima swapped the long ass cutscenes from MGS4 for long ass action. And just went way over budget or time I guess. Doesn't help that Konami was breathing down his neck. And we saw the same shit with Death Stranding. If the guys at Witcher 3 can get it just right, idk why Kojima couldn't.

From what I read at the time. Konami was interested in getting into the pachinko industry so was downsizing their videogame division, and there was a rumor Kojima upsetting the higher ups by spending Phantom Pain development time and money on his pet project P.T. Which was probably part of the reason why the game was cut short and they split.

It's a pity because we'll never see Phantom Pain as a complete game.
