I was on vacation this week so I'm being gay and responding to shit late as fuck.

I think kojimbo resents the fact that people love Big Boss despite the fact dude was a legit monster. Thats the interesting part. I don't care about his idiotic highschool level idiotic political takes
I'm like 99% sure Kojima has stated that he preferred Big Boss to Solid Snake. I vaguely recall it was for some dumbass reason like "Big Boss is human with emotions, while Solid Snake is a clone." or something which made no sense with how the characters came off.

It also doesn't jive with the fact that Kojima consistently went out of his way to not portray Big Boss in any sort of bad light. The closest they come to it in the 3D games is the final speech in Peace Walker, and even then it still doesn't come off as monstrous.
IIRC the justification literally was "she's American born so she wouldn't have an accent, giving her an accent was a mistake". Though I'm not sure if it was Zimmerman that said that or some other producer.
Yeah, but then giving Naomi an American accent doesn't make sense because she, logically speaking, wasn't born in America and based on everything we know was raised in and around Africa, where any English she would have learned probably would have been with people speaking with an English Accent.

Not trying to say anything against you by this, just that the "take everyones accent away" thing was stupid even if it technically made sense for Mei Ling.

Edit: I'm forgetting they got rid of Nastashas accent too, which really doesn't make sense since she was born and raised in Ukraine until the age of like 16.

she had way more Charisma than John ever did
This isn't fair. Kojima never got around to ruining her by making her act like a fucking retard in a series of games like he did with Big Boss.

Also, we saw people literally take bullets for Big Boss. We saw the Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff willing to cancel a retaliatory nuclear strike on Big Bosses word alone. We saw people give up their entire self identity for Big Boss. We saw Quiet literally go from hating him with a passion to loving "him" enough to die for him. We saw him start an entire nation of soldiers TWICE.

Kojima can't write for shit, but the idea that the intention was that he didn't have charisma or that The Boss somehow had more than him by the end is ridiculous.

its all a factor of time and reputation, Big Boss outlived her by the time of his defeat in MG2 by over 24 years, and despite the shit he's acredited to by MG1 and MG2, it doesn't hit him as hard as the U.S. casting out The Boss for "betraying" America during Virtuous Mission.
and most of all, The Boss built her reputation almost completely herself and her own actions, sure she had connections to the Philosphers, and she was their weapon when demanded, but she was just that, a weapon to them, not a figurehead, all of that was her own.

Big Boss was PURPOSEFULLY hyped up by outside forces for decades, to heighten his legend, for gods sakes they made a brainwashed body double so he could double-time it as well, EVEN after betraying/cutting ties with Zero, Zero STILL kept the hype campaign for the man.

everything you said is true, and John is very charismatic and legendary and has alot of people willing to do alot of things for him, but The Boss was far more organic in her Reputational growth, and never tried to make some sort of Merc Army with her at the front, she was mostly a quiet lowkey warrior who's reputation spread because of her abilities and outcomes.

Brother, Big Boss averted world wide nuclear war twice. Big Bosses reputation among SOLDIERS was cemented by fighting with them. His reputation among normal citizens was what the Patriots had a hand in and doesn't really matter. Edit: And also doesn't most of that happen after the coma anyways? You act like MSF was built on Patriot lies or something.

I also like how you handwave her father being a literal fucking wiseman in the Philosophers as "just a connection" and couldn't have had any hand in what she became or her reputation. You don't think it's a coincidence that Volgin also was a huge figure in the Soviet Union and his father also just happened to be a wiseman?

"The lights on the Plant's struts are functioning. I won't have to use the IR goggles." I always thought it was weird how you can find thermal goggles at the very start of the Plant chapter. The implication only just dawned on me that Raiden decided that, since the lights on that particular strut were working, he was never going to need the goggles and tossed them in the pool like an empty soda can :story:

jesus fuckin christ that's retarded.

put that one in the dumpster and start cooking again.
It's only retarded if you were born after the year 2000 and/or started playing this series after like 2008.

If you're counting the whole of Metal Gear, there were like 5 games where Big Boss was *the* greatest soldier ever.

Then MGS3 came out, and suddenly this woman shows up and start fluffing her up as the greatest ever with absolutely no fucking build up, and then proceed to make Big Boss look like a complete clown from there on, and then they start to retcon and decanon his previous history to take away highlights.

It's literally the same shit that happened with Luke to Rey.

I think you missed how they did the same shit with Solid, where his Legend didn't meet his reality for basically anyone he met, capable as he is, everything in the series is a bunch of repetitions.
even The Boss, as overhyped as she is, is still not quite the legend everyone thinks, because in the end, she laid down and died for a bunch of old retards because they said so.

the Crux of the problem with your analogy is.. The Boss is still likable, its a key component here, Rey isn't.

What?

Solid was the only person who didn't think he didn't live up to his legend. Meryl and Raiden absolutely looked at him in awe. If you're going to make the argument that they looked down on him when he was literally in the body of a 70 year old man then IDK what the fuck to even say.

And no, The Boss isn't likable. She's monotone, overly melodramatic and philosophical at inappropriate times. It's amazing how having a "I got screwed cause I'm a woman" sob story and showing off her middrift followed by Snake crying to a sad song at her grave makes people think she's somehow a great character.

Eh, "boss this", "big boss that".

This is why I stick with Solid, clear cut journey from beginning to tragic bittersweet end.

A man that did what he had to do, remained loyal and helpful to those that needed and fulfilled The Boss's will without ever getting involved in that nonsense with Big Boss himself spelling out he was the best between the two of them on the fact he did the actual right things.

Damn this is some of the best MGS discussion I've seen on the internet.

Autism is required to enjoy MGS to be honest.

Better be an autist than a normie tho, thats my book.

The only way yo enyoy metal Gear Is ignoring everything after 3. Maybe peace walker and 4
Or by comparing the characters to irl political figures.

Campbell's canonically a big slut, though. That's how he's Meryl's father, not uncle.
True. It's just rich coming from Snake, considering MRRL was barely legal during the Shadow Moses Incident. Hell, she might have been illegal (supplementary material puts her birthday in 1987).

He also contemplates asking Emma out. Official sources say she's "18". Let's be honest here, she really, really isn't.
Emma Emmerich, being 18
TL:DR: Snake likes 'em young, and is in no position to judge.

One thing that always bugged me about Snake is that for a glowie he's really judgemental. His first meeting with Otacon, where he puts down Hal's motive for getting into science, is another good example. "Sounds like a childish excuse to me" Ok killer.

Metal Gear Solid is the Star Wars of schizo Internet people.

I thought the Bosses irrelevance later in the timeline was intentional, even foreshadowed by Eva at the end of 3. She says something to the effect of "History won't remember what she did", nobody was meant to know the nature of her mission and how she took a fall for the US. She's buried in a nameless grave and only those who knew her personally remembered her after the events of MGS3. By the time of MGS1, she's ancient history. I thought that to be a very poignant way to cover up the zero mentions of her in the future.

I thought so too, so too does Big Boss fall to this as well, sure he's not outright replaced by Solid Snake, but he's his killer, and people talk about him similarly, and by MGS Big Boss is just some great dead man, we think he's in higher esteem because all the people who do rate him so high are in the cast of villains and some hero's, to everyone else he's already being forgotten minute by minute.
and once again by MG Raiden, Snake is barely mentioned, all that effort, all that talk of legacy, and poof, gone.

Legacy, heroes, villains... All that mattered was the mission.
