And the plot was a retread of the first game.
Metal Gear Solid's plot was a retread of Metal Gear 2's plot as well.

I could give Kojima a pass on that since who the fuck in the US played MG2 in 1998, but I also hear that he didn't really give a fuck about the US audience until MGS took off over there too so...

Basically Metal Gear 2 was a quasi REsequel to Metal Gear. Then Metal Gear Solid basically did the same thing as Metal Gear 2. Then Metal Gear Solid 2 did the same thing as Metal Gear Solid, but in a memetic roundabout way. Koji sure knew how to retell the same story again and again.

Best way to play MGS 3? I tried emulating on pcsx2 but it ran like shit, does the steam version have good performance?

A bit early if you're in the US, but the best Metal Gear game is celebrating it's 25th birthday today

Theory: as much as BiBo and Solid are copies of Snake Plissken, Kazuhira Miller (post-retcon, pre-Fall) takes design cues/attitude from Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China.

Why: mullet, sunglasses, Kojima does like Kurt Russell.

It would have been cooler to go full kaiju mode in the final battle with a destroyed New York, and it would have made more sense, but there is no way that would ever happen that soon after 9/11.
I did read somewhere there was an extended New York destruction sequence that was cut from the final game for this reason. This was secondhand via a tvtropes trivia page so take that with a grain of salt.

Why would I? You're right.

Yes, apparently a map exists for that too. I forgot which video I've seen it shown off in, tho.
There was definitely going to be a big bombastic finale with lots of destruction, but after 9/11 that was a no-go. Honestly, I like the final game's ending better, altho it's a bit surreal that a bunch of New Yorkers are just walking by two guys in full combat gear without a care.

They even went so far as to remove the American flag from the scene... even though it would have been way cooler with it. Supposedly after killing Solidus the flag would have been cut from the pole above Federal Hall and it would have fallen, being carried by the wind and eventually draping itself around Raiden. Then again, considering Raiden was dooming America there, perhaps it's best the flag was removed. If it was going to land on anyone, it should have landed on Solidus.

When they get around to remaking/remastering MGS2: alternate "pre-9/11" ending would be pretty interesting. More of a "Criterion Collection DVD Extras" thing than a "cash-grab vidya remake" thing, though.

Am I the only one who immediately has a Solid Snake "Metal Gear?" moment whenever I see this thread's title when I check the Farms?

Really wish there was more Delta gameplay out there (game's out in 3 months)... little concerning I've seen only a couple japanese demos sporadically over the last year. Moreso I'm concerned about the industry's ongoing greed and the inevitable pricing of Delta at 70-80$... Thanks Goytendo. We already know the story, the VAs are the same, the graphics look great (though that's not why I would be purchasing it), but I haven't seen much of it being played normally. I don't have much of a sense of how the AI will work around Snake's new MGSV-style movement.

The AI is going to be buffed by a lot given the complexity of what Snake can do. Anything is better than the ball numbing stupidity of V's AI.
