What's funny is that the bad guys win in MGS2 thanks to Raiden being an indecisive white-haired twink. Solidus was a patriot who loved his country. That's the sweet irony of MGS2, you play as this naiive boyscout being led through one of Solid Snake's triumphs thinking he's the good guy... and then you kill the one man trying to save America from unelected AI overlords. Congrats Jack, you shitty fucking Titanic reference (there's another one). You doomed the world to the Sons of the Patriots system...
I've always been a proponent of Solidus Did Nothing Wrong but you could level this criticism at Snake in MGS 1, too. Liquid was fighting against TPTB as well while Snake continues to follow the orders of the people repeatedly stabbing him in the back. He only "beats" the Patriots at the end of 4 because Naomi/Ocelot/Sunny doing the heavy lifting.

While true. I think he made up for it with the microwave hallway.
He did put himself through that, but Raiden was spot-on when he said that his body's a machine. So Snake was only in there because he's a prideful old man.

I'm actually of the opinion that the microwave hallway is a little overrated. People big it up as this big powerful moment but it really boils down to "Kojima can't show that a character's in pain without forcing the player to inflict pain on themselves to continue." A design choice that plagued every Solid game I have played (I never played V).

That was intended, I thought. Solid Snake was tired of being a pawn, going through the BB betrayal and killing him twice, but his solution after that was to opt out and be a drunk, dog-hoarding PTSD hermit in Alaska.

MGS1 was Snake getting kidnapped, deciding the easiest way out was to go through the motions for a third time, but then both the global reach of the conspiracy and the power of friendship made him realize that he can't self-isolate and keep his head down or things are just going to keep happening over and over.

In order for Solid to have this personal growth, though, he had to first be betrayed as the FOXDIE vector while quashing Liquid's completely justified albeit shirtless revolt going on in the background. If Liquid had taken a snowmobile to Solid's Alaskan depression cabin a year previous and explained him some stuff, they might have been able to work together, because their end goals aren't that different. However, Solid seems like a learn-by-doing guy and Liquid would have had to bring a killer PowerPoint to break through Solid's apathy.

My reading-too-much-into-it theory is that when the Patriots were making Liquid blond, they also managed to split Big Boss' psyche in two. There's the driving force in Big Boss that likes to gather a bunch of weird dudes with powers and code names (and just normal dudes with balaclavas) and make an army to get back at the government, and the equally strong tendency of Big Boss to mope off alone like when he tried to be a hunting guide in the woods before the San Hieronymo Incident and when he motorcycle'd off from the Patriots because he was mad that they cloned him. Liquid has the positive symptoms of Snake; Solid has the negative symptoms of Snake.

Metal Gear has some great music, but I got to say I find myself listening to this one more than others
Peace Walker might have it's up and downs, but vibes around the Mother Base are definitely top notch. ZEKE building menu is also fantastic as well.

if Ocelot had de-prioritized his chronic backstabbing disorder he could have brought down the Patriots a decade earlier.
Shit, I didn't even think about that. And all the "Liquid is in my arm" horseshit just turned out to be more psychosomatic hypnotist bullshit in MGS4. Ocelot why are you so unpredictable? I swear, you'd think he'd be cumming in his Shalashaska-slacks after seeing Solidus with the eye patch... "You're the spitting image of Big Boss".
It didn't occur to me as a teen playing it but he wasn't a villain at all. I wouldn't even say anti-hero. He was just willing to beat the Patriots by any means necessary. Willing to kill millions in NYC with a nuke to destroy their grip on their global control.
And twink Raiden was willing to Doom the World, all for one (in all likelyhood autistic) Russian baby... what an absolute wide-hipped retard.

Remember - Raiden willingly fought against Solidus AFTER his conversation with the colonel AI on the roof of Federal Hall. This was AFTER the AI told him he was a fucking retard who couldn't think for himself, and that he was PLAYING RIGHT INTO THEIR HANDS. And he STILL followed through with fighting against Solidus... The shit Raiden gets is 110% deserved.

In fairness to Raiden, Solidus did say he was gonna kill him and extract his nanomachines to find a new lead on the Patriots. So I don't think Raiden really had a choice in fighting him. Though it was nice of Solidus to give him a fighting chance.

That was a pretty dumb retcon, even for the series. In the MGS2 comic book, The Sorrow cameo'd to tell Ocelot he was disappointed in his ghost wrangling abilities. I liked the idea of Ocelot having small-medium abilities, and especially the idea of someone being inconvenienced by having psychic powers. He has other stuff to do!

Speaking of keeping meat alive that has Big Boss' DNA in it, and Ocelot's messed-up kanban chart: they could have reconstructed Ocelot's Big Bae using Liquid's body instead of farting around a few years before using Solidus. Solidus being braindead and Liquid being regular dead is an argument against, but it's not like Liquid's arm wasn't viable for transplantation, right?

You beat me to this. Raiden is not a smart man, but "hold still while I murder you" is a really hard sell, even if the Answers to Everything are hidden in his brain. (Arthur Dent declined a similar offer in 1979.)

If Solidus had been asking something more reasonable, like "let's kick ass like father and son; I can get you your own vibro-blade" Raiden would probably have gone for it. Child abuse is something they have to talk about, but at least Solidus is definitely not a rogue computer program and Raiden didn't get him pregnant.

Wasn't there also something about BB being kept in a coma by the AIs, and Ocelot couldn't revive him until they were destroyed? I don't really feel like sitting through the entire ending again to check. IIRC once the Patriots were destroyed Ocelot did use parts from both Liquid and Solidus.

It's just funny that Ocelot never thought to replace his eye. I guess he has a particular image of BB in his head and nothing else would do.

I think you're right; they wanted to keep BB as a curated icon, not an inconvenient human. All the more reason to work on the Patriots sooner.

Binocular vision after ~40 years without would probably give you a headache, even for a seasoned coma-enjoyer like Big Boss, but Occam's Razor is that Ocelot thinks it looks badass.

I honestly would have loved it if he was actually getting possessed from beyond the grave by Liquid on account of the arm. Considering we've got both Psycho Mantis and The Sorrow it wouldn't exactly be out of base with the setting.

I want to live in world where MGS4 had ghost Liquid over the spoonful's of shit we were forced to eat.

Is it strange that one of the things I'm looking forward to most with MGS Delta are the weapons? I don't know, I just like how crunchy the weapons are in MGS games. I eagerly await getting that giga-1911 in HD. A 1911 > A fake-tits Chicom honeypot spy.
Though it was nice of Solidus to give him a fighting chance.
And I forgot that as well. Raiden was handcuffed, yet Solidus freed him just so they could have a fair fight. He really is the best Snake.

Wasn't the ending of MGS2 a simulation? They fight in a flying, holographic platform in the middle of the air, the Metal Gears crash in the middle of the town (which was supposed to be the Twin Towers early on IIRC) and no-one cares, acting like NPCs, which Snake confirms and then things get esoteric. And the plot was a retread of the first game.

It was a simulation, but a real one ie a manufactured terrorist incident to train the next Solid Snake. Of course, it's much more convoluted than that, but the plot is the way it is intentionally to mindfuck the player. This all happened, I just assume New Yorkers are used to this sort of thing happening by that point.
It would have been cooler to go full kaiju mode in the final battle with a destroyed New York, and it would have made more sense, but there is no way that would ever happen that soon after 9/11.
