MGS4 is my all time favourite and I will fight to the death with that opinion. It’s friggin amazing from start to finish and had the best ending the franchise had, as much as I loved 5 It just couldn’t compare to that sucker punch of an ending 4 gave us. I wouldn’t have mined if the series had just ended their. It felt like the Kojimas last true breath of passion for the series before survive came along and screwed things up. It’s a huge shame.

MGS4 should have been an animated movie, not a video game.

It was the one game in the series Kojima didn't want to work on IIRC
Better he was allowed to fail on his own.

Otherwise we'd be begging him to come back and 'fix' whatever the next guy did.

>Big Boss is God
>Fuck You Solid Snake, I'm Stealing your Game

MGS4 was made for fags that cum all over 3. And it was advertised that it was going to be made for the guys that stood in awe when MGS1 was out back in 1998/99.

No other game made me feel that I've been ripped off days after finished it when hindsight set in. Not even MGS2 managed to do that.

Retconned because of the ridiculous backlash to 2. I thought Liquid possessing Ocelot was a cool idea, but apparently fans don't like having paranormal stuff. Nanomachines, son.
I could have done without ghosts and goblins in my military espionage thriller. Kind of how like MS Gundam didn't need their Not Jedis.

imo they could've done paranormal and done it right - like with mantis. keeping it relatively cryptic and unexplained

If that were true Kojima wouldn't have doubled down in MGS3 and basically explained why Ocelot can do that by making his father a spirit medium. I don't actually remember there being much of a backlash anyways, outside of the obvious "this was never explained" that was prevalent throughout most of MGS2.

Kojima has *never* given a shit about what fans want. He even goes out of his way to subvert what fans want to piss them off most of the time. That's basically the entirety of MGS2 and MGS4.

The Ocelot retcon is some autistic fixation Kojima has had about making someone somebody else through suggestion that he has had since MGS2 and has carried all the way to MGS V. If we ever got his The Boss in WWII dream game we would have probably learned that The Boss was actually conditioned to be the way she was based on someone from world war 1 who would then become the new Jesus Christ of the MGS universe.

If you don't like retcons and beefcake, you're gonna have a bad time in the world of MGS.

To be fair, I actually started the series with MGS unlike most of Kojimas fanboys so the only retcon I had to deal with was Big Boss being Snakes dad (which I didn't even know about)

Also I think my problem is more with Kojima fanboys than the plot/story/dialogue itself. The shit's fun, I just wish his fanboys wouldn't act like such retards regarding it as high art.

the first mgs playthrough i actually watched was vinesauce vinny's twin snakes streams, right at the liquid fight.
the cutscene was so fucking hilarious that i knew i needed to watch the rest of the playthrough and it did not disappoint.
mgs is fun when it's stupid and ridiculous. like what the fuck happened to jokes

Remember when promos were starting to come out for Death Stranding, and there was a big fan theory that it was going to be a roman a clef of Metal Gear, finally told the way Kojima wanted, as evidenced by Cliff being a creepy father with something coming out of his eyes, and also War?

Occam's Razor is that Kojima just told two separate mo-cappers, years apart, "so anyway now there's a undead dad and he's sad, maybe he goes like this *hand gestures*."

The rabid Kojima fanboy theories are like the argument that all David Lynch's films take place in the same universe just because there are so many secretly-creepy idyllic towns. Yeah, you've got your Kevin Smith who doess it on purpose, but then you have your Tarantino who keeps having foot shots because my dude just likes feet.

Agree. I like a nice editorial balance: "War is a self-perpetuating meme that changes the nature of humanity to suit it. ...Also this one dude keeps pooping himself, and so do all his ancestors."

This is just my impression but I can't remember people having a problem with Mantis in particular. Decoy Octopus was also on a level of magical lunacy that Sniper Wolf, Vulcan Raven, Liquid or even Gray Fox couldn't top.

I think the problem going forward was overdoing it. Liquid possessing Ocelot was mysterious and mystery is fun. Fortune was pretty cool but standing there bending bullet trajectories around her is some Matrix bullshit where it goes a bit too far. (and yes, I know her tragic backstory I vaguely remember some dialogue) It could have been better if she was more involved with her power.

I don't recall the majority having a problem with the supernatural in MGS2, it was more so just how stupid it was presented.

MGS establishes that supernatural shit is more prevalent in their universe than the real world, but it's still treated as something special and presented in a cool way. Mantis powers are the main focus of his fight, and Raven being a Shamen at least gives us a cool cutscene.

In MGS2 it's just really lazy. Ocelot is possessed by Liquid and nobody even seems to notice. Snake goes "Liquids arm!?" and that's it. Solidus seems to think it's a problem with surgery during the hostage rescue part, but then when Liquid shows up at the end he doesn't even seem phased like he knew the whole time? But then why the fuck do you let Ocelot be your right hand man? Whatever, it's just an excuse for Liquid to return and you should hail Kojima as a genius for it I guess.

Same goes for the other characters. Vamp is a vampire so that he can survive a bullet to the head and run on water. That's it. It doesn't really effect his boss battle in any way. He's just a guy who can jump around a lot and negate first person view shooting. I guess he can also "freeze your shadow" but is that even a vampire power? He doesn't suck your blood to regenerate his health or turn into a bat or seduce Emma or do any real vampire shit other than drink a SEALs blood in one cutscene.

Fortune deflects bullets away from her and shoots a big fucking gun. That's it. It's clearly some kind of electromagnetic shield with how they all veer away instead of just missing her by an inch but for some reason they think it's "luck". Just another excuse to negate first person view shooting, basically. Even at the end, it's not "luck" that saves her it just looks like she's another fucking telepath. Kojima is God.

It's like Kojima thought the problem was he didn't "explain it" when the problem was it was just fucking lazy and lame. Then the explanations just ended up being lazy and lame. It was technology/parasites the whole time guys!

If Snake is to be believed (when he explained to Raiden) Vamp didn't get his codename because he's Eastern European and vampire themed. He got it because he's a big slutty bisexual, and Kojima fervently believes "vamp" is slang for that.

I agree with your insight. I think that there can be a slippery slope, mood-wise, with the supernatural. It's easy to fold one ESP user per game into the mix; for some reason, that doesn't clash too badly with semi-sci-fi. Dude has lightning powers for no particular reason, well, lightning looks like electricity and it's a research base; it's fine. You start getting ghosts and maybe-vampires involved, I could see how that could feel like it's getting silly, from a writer's perspective.

(In the comic for MGS2, the ghost of The Sorrow turns up to briefly tell Ocelot SON I AM DISAPPOINT that Ocelot is not better at handling attempts at possession. It's great.)

Actually, it is an odd example of restraint that we didn't get a huge CODEC or cutscene explaining very specifically why Colonel Volgin has lightning powers. We were told why Volgin has his political power and a ton of money, but shooting lightning, that's self-explanatory. It works well like that, too; maybe Kojima learned.

Vagina
And
Male
Penises

Actually, he got that name because Vamp was originally supposed to be female, and vamp is slang for a seductive woman. It's stated that Vamp was in a relationship with Colonel Dolph.

I love how Snake almost judges Raiden for assuming Vamp stands for vampire. Then he gets on his high horse and says, "They don’t give a damn what you think." Damn Snake, chill.:story:
