Facts About Hummingbirds

• Flight and Agility: They beat their wings 70 to 200+ times per second and can rotate their shoulder joints to fly backward, upside-down, and hover in midair.
• Size and Weight: Most species weigh between 2 to 20 grams (less than a nickel or about the weight of a penny). The bee hummingbird is the world's smallest bird at just 2 inches long.
• Heart Rate and Metabolism: Their hearts beat from 225 to over 1,200 beats per minute during active flight, giving them the fastest metabolism in the animal kingdom.
• Legs: Their legs and feet are very small and weak, meaning they can perch or scoot sideways, but cannot walk or hop.
• Diet: They consume nectar from tubular flowers and small insects or spiders for protein, visiting up to 1,000 to 2,000 flowers a day.
