CANBERRA, Australia -- Australia’s second-largest city was set to enter its fourth lockdown Thursday as concern grew over the rapid spread of infections from a coronavirus variant.

The seven-day lockdown for Melbourne and the rest of Victoria state comes after a new cluster in the city rose to 26 infections, including a person who was in intensive care. Another 10,000 people have had some degree of contact with those already infected.

“Unless something changes, this will be increasingly uncontrollable,” Victoria Acting Premier James Merlino said.

The federal government declared Melbourne a hot spot, which entitles the city to additional federal resources. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said 218 military personnel were in Victoria helping in pandemic operations and more would be sent if Merlino asked.

Additional vaccine doses were also being sent to Victoria. Only 3.9 million vaccines doses have been administered among Australia’s population of 26 million.

Health Minister Greg Hunt described the lockdown, which begins at midnight, as “highly regrettable, but necessary restrictions under the current circumstances.”

People will only be able to leave home to shop for food and essential items, provide or receive care, exercise, work or study if they are unable to do so from home, and to get vaccinated. Masks will be compulsory indoors and outdoors.

Cafes and restaurants will only be able to offer takeout and schools will close. Professional sports events in Melbourne will continue, but without crowds.

Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said the variant was the same one identified in India and designated by the World Health Organization as a variant of concern. It was more transmissible than some variants.

The states of Western Australia and South Australia are restricting travel from Victoria and New Zealand has halted quarantine-free travel to Melbourne.

The new Melbourne cluster was found after a traveler from India became infected while in hotel quarantine in South Australia state earlier this month. The traveler was not diagnosed until he returned home from Adelaide to Melbourne.

The city of 5 million people became Australia’s worst hot spot last year. Infections peaked at 725 new cases in a single day in August at a time when community spread had been virtually eliminated elsewhere in the country.

That lockdown lasted for 111 days. A third lockdown that lasted for five days in February was triggered by a cluster of 13 cases linked to hotel quarantine near Melbourne Airport.

Victoria accounts for 820 of Australia’s 910 coronavirus deaths.

Why the heck would you let in Indians with their staggering case rate and new variant of concern? They keep getting new clusters, and they keep not learning from their previous mistakes.

Repeated lockdowns are destroying whole economies and breaking food supply chains under the guise of saving a very tiny fraction of the population that is actually vulnerable to Covid (and to its endless variants they're constantly wailing about). This is nothing akin to the Black Death and the draconian measures aren't "necessary" at all--they never were. Poverty and malnutrition as a result of the lockdowns will eventually kill far more people, far more indiscriminately than this fucking joke of a virus ever could. We haven't seen anything yet.

That's the federal government's fault for being so retarded. When we repatriated Aussies from Wuhan at the start of this all, they were able to crash on Christmas Island for their quarantine period - why didn't the same happen for people repatriated from India? It's not as if they tore down the facilities once everyone from China was back on mainland Australia.

As for Aussies stuck in India, they wanted to come back earlier before things went to hell in a handbasket, but A) The Indian government put in place a flight ban out of the country, and B) There were only so many tickets to go around, and so few flights heading back.

We constructed purpose-built quarantine facilities specifically for the Spanish Flu when it first hit nearly a century ago, and yet some bright spark in the government somehow thought hotels would be 'good enough' for quarantining potentially infected arrivals. That turned out disastrously, as we now see. Hotels aren't equipped whatsoever to properly quarantine people, they'd have to completely retrofit their ventilation systems to completely avoid spreading airborne pathogens. The guards prohibiting people from leaving the building end up catching and spreading the virus as well.

It's only now that the federal government has decided to invest in quarantine facilities, by converting a disused migrant facility to one, and funding construction of new facilities. If we had dedicated quarantine facilities by now, most of this mess wouldn't even happen.

26 cases in a city of 400,000 people

For the greater good!

Globalism. My country is in the same fucking boat. Like holy fuck there was a disease from China they didn't shut the borders. Ok it's not multiple countries and they just closed a few places like China and Italy, even though other countries could have already been infected and transmitting. All we had to do, all most of our government had to fucking do was say "Oh fuck, new infectious disease, total border lockdown, nothing comes in". Plenty of us live in places that can provide enough food to feed our own people, if we needed to it would be a great excuse to invest in more local manufacturing jobs if we ran out of anything we needed to build.
But no fuck that, the global supply chain must be upheld and we will all sing the priase of open borders and show our commitment to the idea by bringing in people with a new fuckign disease. Oh but you try visiting your nan and the police will fucking arrest you, don't leave your house, etc.
We could even see a huge fucking boost to the local economy when people have to buy local or visit local tourist places, etc.

I fucking hate globalism, but worst of all I fucking hate the cunts who support lockdown while jeering at the idea of closing borders.

"ok, the last three lockdowns did fuck-all, but this time it'll work!" [Something something "expecting different results."]

A lockdown over 26 people?
In a population of how many?
Why not just roll out 3-4 more hospitals and let people live their life?
5 million.
What's worse is the whole fucking state is locked down. You can't travel more than 5kms from home, which is fine in the metro area, but 5kms from my home is fucking fields with cows.

Wow Australia is such a cluster fuck of bullshit. You can't be serious. I'd be rioting after 3rd lockdown.

It would probably turn out like all the totally-necessary emergency field hospitals in the US that went virtually unused:

It isn't Indians being let in, it is Australians that have been stranded in India since the pandemic began by the Australian government.

725 new cases doesn’t sound all that bad compared to the five million people that live there. If anything, the math does not compute with thinking that more lockdowns will stop a spread of the virus, if more heathy people get squeezed in with already sick people.

Consoom lockdown and get ready for next lockdown!

Seriously though, this is just more evidence that the measures are retarded and locking down isn't going to stop a highly transmissible virus.

They can't use CI at the moment as there are detainees who are back in the centres. I know someone who works up there. That Sri Lankan family is in the family camp and there are visa cancellation people in the maximum-security centre.

We're a first-world country run by a third-world government cruising off an unholy string of good luck.
I can't wait for the pandemic to end and Morrison to get his just desserts, like all the other PM's before him.

That is essentially 'being let in'. Anyone coming from India, should have been put at the back of the line once it took over there, but noooo commie Andrews had to keep them coming. As someone just said to me 'it's always Victoria' i.e. Cali of Australia.

Wow Australia Victoria is such a cluster fuck of bullshit. You can't be serious. I'd be rioting after 3rd lockdown.
FTFY

Yeah, because Morrison controls everything Andrews does, doesn't he?
