I got it recently, it's decent. I like Soulstone Survivors the most for the genre, but I've been burned out on it and couldn't get into Vampire again.

Been following some guides on unlocks, just got Dexecutioner and Cursed Sword, but I am currently getting pretty filtered on Tier 2 still.

I've beaten each boss a few times now at tier 3. It's fun, scratches the mindless casino gaming itch while still being involved more than just moving mechanically around enemies like in Vampire Survivors. The parts that make me not want to grind it anymore:
  • Strafe jumping is quietly a required mechanic. If you're not strafe jumping, you're gimping yourself. Sitting at a keyboard and mouse, this is fine and fun because I enjoyed Quake for a long time, but I don't play games at my desk at all anymore. On a controller it's very awkward to do consistently.
  • The quality of a run is determined in the first 2-3 minutes. If you don't get the "mandatory" items/tomes very early, or a legendary, you might as well restart if your goal is a high score. And high scores become the main motivating factor to continue playing after getting most of the unlocks, so the game becomes resetting until finding that first nearby great item.
  • Similarly, sometimes the layout of a level makes traversing it a chore and eats into precious time gathering. A run is killed if you need to climb a ridiculous mountain early for something important on the forest level.
  • The desert level is more fun for me because of that, but having a tornado randomly blow you into the air for 5 seconds while charging a shrine is the most annoying feeling.
I dunno, I don't really play many games anymore, but I enjoyed dumping 30 hours into it. It's a lesson in compounding interest and diminishing returns.

Would you recommend Soulstone Survivors?

Yes, I probably have 80 hours into it. Lots of progression, each character has a upgrade tree and they each have multiple nodes that buff all characters so it gives you incentive to play around. A ton of skills and a rune system that gives you pregame options to build around. There are tons of affects to make builds with, and summons are a fun a varied type that I've not seen in other survivor games. The tools to help get you're build are great, banish doesn't cost your level up(so infuriating in Megabonk) and you get a lock mechanic so if you get two rare/legendary abilities, you can save it for the next level up.

It's not the hardest, while there is some variety in content, it doesn't play all that differently. Most of the content is setting up a build of synergistic skills, and with the reroll/banish/lock mechanics that's not hard to do(less RNG dependent might be a pro though) I don't know what kind of a grind it is getting into new content starting from fresh, as I've had excess materiels going into each new content release.

Spent about 25 hours on the game and got bored after beating the forest level 3 boss a few times, I have not been able to beat the level 3 desert boss yet. It seems like you are trapped into being able to beat the boss only if you follow certain meta builds. Unlike Risk of Rain (the closest thing I can think of in comparison) the game lacks replayability and flexibility in builds. The RNG is also very punishing, even if you use the toggle ability to disable some of the items (unfortunately there are many 'useless' items you cant disable)

It seems like the dev is still interested in continuing to develop the game though, so maybe it will be better a year from now, we shall see.

Have you ever seen such bullshit.

Got into the game and i share your opinion. The game is fun, but like you said in a way it wants you to play in a certain way and if you dont you get heavily punished which annoys me to no end because i like to try different shit and it feels like the game punishes you more than it encourages it.

I feel like something has changed with the patch, because overnight I went from being able to get to level 3 to struggling to get to the boss of level 1. It seems like all my health gets drained before I can react once the swarms hit.
