Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent .308 semi? Preferably something reasonably priced, $1500 and under if possible. Off beat recommendations are welcome, since I’ve already been through the gamut of the standard answers. Specific direction is helpful too, since if there’s one thing I’ve noticed in my research, it’s that not all guns of a given

FAL pattern: If there’s a decent rebuilder that you can recommend, I like this option. Something with a modern scope rail would be nice, I’m looking for a practical gun.

G3 pattern: Same deal, I’ve been told to steer clear of Century, but I hear PTR is okay. The only thing I don’t like is the fluted chamber beating up the brass to the point where you can’t reload, if that’s actually a thing.

AR-10: Some budget options here, but kind of boring.

M14 Pattern: Even Springfield is a little rich for my blood, and I’ve heard their QA is hit or miss. Probably a pass.

Galil Ace, Desertech MDR, Tavor, AR-10 pattern customs like Robinson XCR: All out of my price range.

I just want to know if I’m missing anything obvious that’s worth looking into. I know the answer is probably “AR-10” but I wanted to be thorough.
You can pick up a Century Arms Import L1A1 Sporter/FAL Sporter for relatively cheap these days - if it isn't an IMBEL or Argie receiver though, you're probably getting ripped off. I got my IMBEL version for $600 and I'm planning on sending it in to an FAL guy to get it restored for a grand total of about $1200 for a pretty damn solid .308 semi. Otherwise, DSA FAL can be bought for 1450 with no frills - with your choice of barrel length between 16 inches, 18 inches and 21 inches - and you can pick up a scope rail off their site for another 100 bucks at the same time.

Oh, and you can tell what receiver your CAI FAL is through this handy image (Thanks to Arizona Response Systems)

Otherwise if you're in for a cheap rifle, there's the Century C308 which is their G3 import. People rag on century for good reason but if you're looking for a non-US military design they're a good place to look for deals. Just don't expect super high quality.

I really need to get around to building a CETME/g3/FAL I legit have been ignoring it for no good reason and I love them. Honestly for my 2+ decades of shooting nothing made me smile like that time I got to hold an FN FAL with a giggle switch. I've said it before and will again, I was holding a dragon.

Even semi great weapons.

Also I'm on my "buy something autistmo AF" mode again, and a gun I really want is a 6mm Navy Lee. I know costs found a few online from 1400-2500 and + . I just want one.

I just got some parts for my current build so I'm pretty giddy.

Anyway, speaking of FAL’s here’s a L1A1 markings identification guide. It’s how I know mine is mostly Enfield made, with a trigger from 1958 and a lower from 1965 from Enfield. All CAI guns are parts kit builds meaning you can get a bit of a mess of different parts and pieces.

ATF/FBI are up to their tricks again. This time going after people with those DIAS wallhangers.

I do miss my DSA 16" Para Tactical with short gas system that I had many, many years ago. It was a hefty chunk of steel, but it ran smoothly and was a compact powerhouse since it wasn't much bigger than an AR carbine. But I bought it when you could still get good deals on metric mags that were in great shape. Magazine availability was the main reason I never got another one. By the time I started my current collection the days of cheap surplus metric FAL mags in good condition were long gone, and the mags DSA were making had reliability problems. But my LMT MWS308 is a far superior rifle in my eyes. Love that damn rifle.

Any of you guys have any optics/mounts that absolute co-witness with Magpul Pro BUIS?

the Magpul Pro BUIS are the same height over bore as the normal AR-15/M-16 sights. the optic alignment is determined by the optic itself and the mount needed to align with 2.6 inches (37.125mm) centerline height over bore. as you might imagine, this varies by what optic you are using.

the Aimpoint PRO (for example) comes out of the box with a 39mm CLHOB and this works for a 2/5ths co-witness, but for absolute co-witness it is too tall (unless you're shooting at a fairly long distance), and for 1/3rd co-witness it is too short - the height is in between. since the Aimpoint PRO is design for 200 meters and under, this is alright, generally speaking, but you would need an M68 compatible mount, like the ARMS 22M68 to absolute co-witness.

a T-1 or H-1 would use a Larue LT751 mount (or one of similar height). for absolutely co-witness.

a Trijicon MRO would use a Bobro B19 mount (PN: B19-555-002).

a better approach is finding out what optic you want to use, then find a mount that would suit your purpose.

So basically I'll just have to experiment with my Aimpoint mounts or buy one off American Defense or La Rue. Thank you.

I bought a Mossberg Maverick 88 with my Bidenbux a couple weeks ago, but after dry-firing/hand-sex the gray finish on the forearm is already starting to wear off.

What to do? Leave it? Spray paint? Order a new one?

that's normal. the surface treatment has no coloring, so as long as you aren't taking a file to it or constantly exposing it to salt water, there's no harm. if it makes you feel better you can use Birchwood-Casey's Liquid Gun Blue to color them.

Paint it yellow and pretend you're cash money enough to buy those taser rounds they used to make a few years ago.

I paid about $1100 for my PTR-91 GI and yeah ive done some modification to it ($1500 total sans bolt-ons) and its run excellently so far, at least for the 900 rounds i have through it. Its a pain in the butt, but do the proper break in as described in the manual.
Recently got one, have you had any issues with ammo sensitivity? Mine eats some stuff perfectly, but turns into a jam o matic with some brands, specifically Winchester white box m80s and pmc bronze 308. Love the gun though.

I haven't, but I've only run 150gr fiocchi exclusively through it (bought a shit ton of the stuff in 2019) and only with the enhanced recoil buffer. (Which I had to buy a new stock to get the buffer to fit)

I ran a box of fiocchi through it, ate it up like a champ. What benefits does the enhanced recoil buffer give? I haven't had a problem with recoil on mine, was actually surprised since roller delay is supposed to be bad or something according to the internet.

From what I've read the stock recoil buffer is undersized to reliably cycle rifle grenade rounds. Its supposed to knock recoil down between 30-50% mine is definately softer shooting that my dad's Saiga .308

Interesting, I'll have to look into that. What did you do for a replacement stock? Also did you switch out the irons, I'm not a huge fan of the hk drum style.

I bought a clubfoot stock from hkparts and I didn't switch the irons out, I put on an Eotech and magnifyer.
