If any one is interested, I can give a review od the SA80 series of weapons, including them as a straight pull (bolt action) weapon, but I'' warn you they are all a piece of Shit.

Look what I got yesterday. Chambered in 7.62x54r, 23 inch barrel. The barrel is threaded but has a thread protector pinned into the barrel to get around import regulations. Said cap protector is made to be removed though. I was thinking of getting a SVD style stock set for it, but the thumbhole stock set that came with it feels really natural and comfy so I'm probably just gonna stick with that.

AUGH YEAHAUGH YEAHAUGH YEAH

If I wasn't building my own custom PSL, I probably would have purchased one of these and called it a day. I kind of would like a Vepr rifle (in either .308, 7.62x54R, or even 30-06/some other full power cartridge, if they're ever brought in), but I already have the shotgun :)

And yeah, Ironwood Designs makes a mean SVD furniture set for Vepr rifles, if you're craving some new wood. The guy that runs that business is cool as hell, too. I haven't ordered anything from him yet, but his work is top notch. My Vepr-12 could use some US made birch laminate handguards to replace the factory ones and score another 922r point.

Stock, modified, or otherwise, you can't go wrong with anything Vepr. :semperfidelis:

Unfortunately, my "disposable" income is tied up elsewhere *sigh*

I've been loving mine so far. I got a BP-02 Weaver mount and a Sighton 3-9x40 scope on her now, I'm getting about 2-2.5MOA with surplus Romanian 148gr, wanting to try out some match ammo and see what kind of groups I get.

Also after about a month of my Galil sitting at a gunsmith's place because he could not find a firing pin replacement for my Golani. Apparently people put free-floating IWI firing pins into their Golani bolts and it works just fine, so that's what I'm betting on now.

I also have an AR18 that will soon be mine, just waiting for money order and FFL to clear.

Not bad for a stock semi-auto with cheap spam can ammo. I've been getting into reloading for 7.62x54R. Since I'm in college, I can't afford a lot, so I'm doing the whole equipment purchases piecemeal.

For the PSL I'm building, I bought a barrel from a guy who makes them custom, and my trigger assembly is a Red Star Arms adjustable milled set. It's not cheap, but you could probably tighten your groups with some sort of aftermarket trigger group, as well as different ammo. As far as "match" ammo goes, true match grade ammo is handloaded for one's particular rifle. It's mostly a marketing gimmick that means "made to tighter tolerances." It doesn't necessarily mean it will do better in your particular rifle or anything. Of course, your shooting method may come into play, but you'll get better with your Vepr in time.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I don't claim to be an expert in anything, but I'm more than happy to share what little I've learned.

Sure thing. I want to just practice more before I go into modifying the rifle more then just adding a scope for now. I cannot find a 100+yard rifle range in my area at all it seems though.

Too bad, I know a good outdoor range near my area that my friends and I go to sometime. But if you can find a place that has at least a 100 yard target, you can at least sight your stuff in. I need to do that, and I'm looking at getting this to at least bore-sight my 54R stuff: 7.62x54R Laser Boresighter

It'll at least help zero in your scope along your bore, so it makes it easier to adjust at your distance of choice. 100 yards is a good distance for this, at least.

Fucking NICE! I love the VEPR and have been trying to decide between the 7.62x54mm r model or getting an SVT-40 Tokarev, because I want something in 7.62x54 that is semi-auto because they are so damn cheap to shoot. I'm leaning towards the Tok simply because of the history behind them.

I'm not really into assault rifles so much but I've actually wanted an FS2000 since I first picked one up at a gun show many moons ago. It's probably a combination of them just feeling very comfortable to me and my desire to own a laser rifle.

I always thought they looked like kind of an exotic fish or yacht.

So I finally got my Lewis Machine and Tool MWS308. This is the same rifle that the British and New Zealand armies adopted as the L129A1 Designated Marksman Rifle. I've been lusting after this rifle for nearly five years and every time I've tried to get money saved for it something always came up that I had to use the money for.

Here it is with my Steyr AUG A3. Keep in mind that the AUG has a 20" barrel mounted while the MWS has a 16" barrel mounted. Bullpups are awesome!

I think I need a new red dot for my Galil. The Bushnell TRS25 seems like it's starting to shit itself. Instead of a 2MOA dot, it's more like a red smear now when I look through the lens, it looks like when a red laser is shined into your eye, just not as bright. It covers the whole chest sized target I was shooting at 100 yards, so I couldn't do much more than just put holes on the target and not get any great groups since again the smear covered the whole target. It also was getting foggy inside the optic near the end so I think it's just getting beaten apart at this point. I'm not really too surprised since it was like 80 bucks and anything cheaper is airsoft bullshit. Next one is probably gonna be a Meprolight Trudot RDS.

Another alternative I could do is add a scout scope or pistol scope to the rifle, which I'm debating on doing instead of adding another red dot.

I thought I'd stop by to see the happenings here. I've been too busy in the SlutHate threads to notice this one got any attention. I ordered a reloading press recently and a few other things for making ammunition. You might wonder why I'd bother reloading 7.62x54R, but I'd like to see if I can create some decent loads for my Mosin and later, my PSL, when it's finished being built. Other calibers may possibly follow, 7.62x39 is a strong possibility.

This is the one I got: Lee Precision Classic Cast Press

(from what I've heard, one can even reload .50 BMG with the correct dies on this)

I've also been creating a device called a "bolt hold open" for the build out of a big chunk of 4130 aircraft grade steel (same stuff as the receiver blank is) when I have time to work on my personal things, which isn't often, and I'm trying to remain patient with the whole deal.

Also, @The Dude, that is one badass rifle. I thought of getting an HK417 if I ever go NATO, but that one would be a nice one as well. Does it come in different barrel lengths, if I so choose? Let me know how it performs, though.

Also, @Cute Anime Girl, yeah, any kind of scope or sight designed for airsoft would not be something I would use on real-steel. I'll save the cheap PSO-1 copies from China for the airsoft Dragunov I have

Thanks. I'm quite taken with it. Yes, you can have different barrel lengths with the MWS 308, and you don't even have to choose just one. It comes with a 16" barrel stock, but it has a modular barrel system so you can swap not only different barrel lengths, but also different calibers. You can get barrels in any caliber that is based on the .308 cartridge, like 7mm-08, .338 Federal, .243 Win, .260 Rem, and so on.

Barrels are available in chrome lined chrome-moly steel typically used for machine gun barrels in a 1:10" twist ratio in 16" and 20" lengths, or blackened stainless in a 1:11.5" ratio in 16", 18", and 20" lengths. There are two torque screws on the bottom of the hand guard, you back one out and remove the other and the barrel and gas tube just slide out. Replace the barrel and tighten the screws to 140 inch pounds and you're done. It even comes with a preset ratcheting torque wrench.

In 2009 the British military adopted it as the L129A1 designated marksman rifle. It won a competition that included the HK417, the Mk20 SSR version of the FN SCAR Mk17, the Knights Armament M110 (which is the US military's DMR), and a number of other semi-automatic .308/7.62x51mm rifles. In terms of ruggedness, combat reliability, and accuracy with both standard ball and match grade sniper ammunition the MWS308 beat them all out. It first saw combat with the British military in early 2010 and has gained an excellent reputation. If I remember correctly both the Australian and New Zealand militaries have also adopted it as well. I've even heard rumors of some special operations units using them with 13.5" barrels and LMT has also made that barrel length available to purchase if you've got your rifle registered as an NFA SBR.

I'll be setting mine up with a 5.5x Trijicon ACOG and a backup Aimpoint T1 or T2 red dot optic for shots closer than 75yds, 18" or 20" barrel (I plan on buying a couple of spare barrels), LMT's new folding backup iron sights, a Surefire or OSS sound suppressor, and a Surfire tactical flashlight. I'm buying magazines for it first thing just in case the morons in Washington decide to ram some bullshit law restricting magazine capacity. Mostly I'll be getting 20 and 25 round MagPul PMAGs, but I also want to get an X Products X25 50 round drum mag or two for it, but they aren't a priority. The cool thing about the X25 drums are that they are based on the H&K G8 drum that was made for the HK11 light machine gun, and it is one of the most reliable and robust drum mags ever designed and you can keep them loaded indefinitely because they have a ratcheting mechanism that you can release the spring tension.

tl;dr: My rifle kicks all kinds of ass, is totally awesome, and you should buy one instead of the HK417.

Sounds like you got your work cut out for you, you'll definitely have to give us an update. I'm probably not buying much of anything in the future unless it's related to building the stuff that I have in my queue, or getting reloading supplies to test out my press with.

I finally found a range that goes beyond 100 yards this weekend. A 50-1000 yard range.
I shot at 250 yards, and was able to get the plate every time once I figured where to hold. Not impressive at all but I was happy.

I would like to get one of those someday, just so I can have a big semi-auto that's cheap to shoot. 7.62x54r is about as cheap as it gets for centerfire.

You should print out a dope chart for your rifle if you want to shoot long range and then go verify it.

Also, consider a 200 yard zero, generally you'll only be a hair low 100 but have a lot less hold over for 300+ shots

While I like 54R as much as anybody, you can get better results from more consistent ammo. The spam can shit is quantity over quality, generally speaking. Rolling your own to match your rifle will give you best results, but if you can get 7N1 (rare now) or Prvi Partizan 150 grain FMJ or SP (close for a commercial load), your groups will definitely tighten up, and not beat your shoulder too bad. Your wallet may not be too happy, though.

@Cute Anime Girl, not bad for being out of the box, but it certainly has potential. I'm getting an adjustable trigger for my PSL build and a JTE hammer spring for improved pull. I think Red Star Arms has Vepr compatible trigger sets as well. I know these are no Dragunov, but they can definitely hold their own if you know your particular rifle well, and/or modify it a little.

I'm not too concerned about accuracy with the 54r, I just want a big, semi-auto centerfire rifle that I can shoot for peanuts.
