If i wanted a firearm for self defense and I dont need something big, should I go with a revolver or regular hand gun?
Is your main concern with regards to self defense black bears or black youths? If you don't need something fairly big bore to deal with big boars, you'll be better served with a 9mm/.380 handgun nine times out of ten.

If you want something to carry on your person outside the house, I recommend any CZ-75 or clone of one except the EAA/Tangfolio one. The 75B is the larger full size model and in my opinion the absolute gold standard for My First Nine. My personal favorite is the Jericho 941 with a steel frame, no I didn't buy it because of anime I swear I just like the heft of the steel over aluminum or polymer. For something more concealable, the CZ-75D is a more compact model.

For home defense? A long gun, probably a rifle. An AR-15 if you're somewhere you're allowed to get one, something like the bog standard Smith and Wesson M&P 15, the absolute bog standard AR, is perfectly okay and functional.

Don't listen to this weeaboo.

Glock 19 for a handgun
BCM AR15 for a rifle
Mossberg 590 for a shotgun

Done.

My favorite thing is watching guys buying brand new M&P 2.0s and then immediately buying a new Apex barrel and trigger (Charlie Coks, Hunter Constantine), despite S&W getting rid of the shitty hinge trigger and replacing it a perfectly fine trigger. Half the time these triggers and new barrels are almost always the first thing to go out of stock on Apex's website. Then these same guys will laugh at Glock owners for modifying their gun's sights, triggers, etc. and then they'll buy a new barrel (and trigger) because their old barrel has shit rifling. I don't remember Glocks needing their barrel changed unless you want a comp or suppressor.
The new M&PS, especially the competition ones, do benefit from the Apex stuff but it's by a much smaller margin than the 1.0s and the early 2.0s. I'd not buy Apex replacement parts for the those models unless I was competing at the highest level. That money is better spent on ammo and mags.

Get an SBR if you're talking home defense. Very simple and easy to do now.

Look for a lightly used 75 if you elect to go that route. There's a shit ton of them out there for great prices. Also the P-10 works very well too.

Thread tax: here's pics of the target that I was referring to earlier when I mentioned my Bodyguard 2.0 possibly keyholing rounds. I think you all are correct about hanging paper and subsonic rounds.

That looks like the paper tearing instead of keyholing. Most of my 9s do this too, I don't think you've got a problem with the barrel. Staple one of those to a big piece of cardboard and poke some holes in that if you want to double check.

Yeah, paper will do that sometimes. It seems the group size between the two isn't dramatically different so I doubt it's keyholing.

Not to split hairs and be that guy but we don't know if he's actually looking for a bear pistol, obsolescent isn't the word I'd choose. If I need a 44 mag, wheel gun everyday.

Niche, but if we're talking your basic carry/hd gun that's fair.
There has been a big movement towards 10mm for backcountry defense in the past 7 years. There are multiple major ammo manufacturers that are making bear defense rounds in 10mm now. They have .357 performance with 2 1/2 times the ammo capacity and a quicker reload.

That is paper tearing. You can tell because the tear is circular with a small tear. Keyholeing would almost have an imprint of the bullet and the group would be abysmal.

Hey Everyone, So There's a little line in the recent ATF Guidance that I think people have overlooked and I haven't seen anyone talk about, but the ATF is now just letting people remove their NFA Items from the registry without requiring the relevant item to have been destroyed first, in essence you can now deregulate your shit Willy nilly in 27 states now

I'm sorry but what's exactly new about this? The ATF has always allowed you to de-register short barreled firearms once you changed to a non-NFA configuration, mostly to sell as a regular firearm.

I should have clarified its strictly for home defense. Theres no black bears here, but there are alot of youths.
Glock 17 or 19 is the basic bitch answer, but pretty much any 9mm handgun from the major mfgs should be fine. Prob expect to spend 400-600 and you should be able to get something decent, pair it with a weapon light as it might be a good idea to get a look at whatever your about to start blasting in the night.

I would avoid sig and most anything made in turkey. Here are a few other models that would also be good.

Most anything by cz I like the p-10
Ruger rxm
Sw mp9

9mm is the sweet spot for ammo, plenty of stoping power and the cheapest to shoot.
I would suggest getting a gun you like over just whatever you can afford, you want a gun that you want to shoot, so you enjoy practicing and shooting it.

Also if you have a range nearby alot offer rentals for pretty cheep, you can try some models out to see what you like before buying.

If you go to websites like aimsurplus.com or similar, they get plenty of police trade in 9mm and .40 Glocks. Alot of times they are barely used and just have finish wear from holsters. You'll have to look at their website every few days, you'll never know when or what they'll get in. They sometimes get shotguns and AR15s too. You can get .40 Glocks for $280-$350 and 9mm Glocks for $350-$500

Trade in Glock 43x https://aimsurplus.com/products/leo-trade-in-glock-43x-9mm-handgun
Trade in Glock 17 Gen 4 https://aimsurplus.com/products/leo-trade-in-glock-17-gen-4-9mm-handgun-black

I did go to a range once years ago and tried out the HK VP9, I did like how it felt in my hands but the price was like 700 to buy. If I go again ill try out the glock and see if its better or just as good.

It depends on who you ask, hunters question the lethality of 10mm to this day.
Every time I look up handgun hunting there are people convinced .357 and even .44 are unethical beyond 50 yard shots. Though they're probably the same people that say you need, at minimum, a .300 Remchesterby Magnum for whitetail deer.

Backcountry defense isn’t the same as handgun hunting. I’m talking what people are strapping on when they go out in the backcountry. Not what they take cause they want to be hot shit hunter.

Hunters and soldiers have one thing in common. They’ll never admit that their shot placement was to blame. 10mm will kill black bears and White Tail all day if you do it right.

Yes, and that leads to discussion on lethality, which people claim 10mm lacks due to whatever reason be it diameter or assuming you aren't using loads that meet its full potential. There's also debate that 10mm even in its prime does not meet .357 capability.

It draws from the same loony fonts of knowledge stating you're retarded for not just lugging around an 870 with slugs.

The vast majority of commercial 10mm is “fed lite” and just .40S&W with a smug hipster complex. With hand loading or the right manufacturers it gets close to .41 Magnum.

Is the 10/22 still worth a damn? Are there any others I should keep in mind for a recommendation?
Absolutely. Get it in stainless as modern bluing is trash.
Double and triple check your state laws first. Out here they didn't waste any time putting SBRs in display cases. Safest bet is to wait until the dust settles a little, see if any stores are putting formerly regulated items on display. Realistically they shouldn't care too much and treat it as any other unregistered but otherwise legal firearm, but everything is dynamic right now. Take this with a healthy pinch of salt, IANAL and all that.
My FFL is freaking out and refusing to not do Form 4s. I understand he's younger and has a wife and a house and doesn't want ATF rape under a Dem administration..... So I'll get my suppressors and sbrs elsewhere

9mm has killed a lot of dangerous animals too....
