I didn't think I'd ever own another Mosin, but here I am. Marked year 1943, all matching serials, still caked in Cosoline.

I'll be picking up a new rifle next week; a CMMG Mk47 Mutant. Basically it's a scaled up AR that is chambered in 7.62x39mm and uses AK magazines. After that I'll be buying a couple of AR-15 lowers for future builds, a DP-12 shotgun, and a .45 ACP pistol of some sort (probably either a Springfield TRP Operator or FN FNX45 Tactical.)
 
What made you go with the mutant?

I think both the pistols you listed you'll be very happy with the FNX is a lot nicer than I expected to be, like a lot and I had pretty high expectations for what that's worth.

To those with the Type 99's any of you have the aircraft sights? They are pretty silly I love odd features and tend to collect on history and quirks. I mostly collect mil surp stuff and am a wild cat whore. Right now I'm debating if I need to finish my bren kit or get optics for this spare parts AR I built that oddly shoots like a dream.

I wanted something high quality, accurate, cheap to shoot, and a platform I was familiar with, but I DIDN'T want a Kalashnikov unless it was a Galil ACE (which they haven't released yet aside from the pistol). I used to build AKs for a company called Vector Arms from 2004-2005 and I got REALLY sick of them. I've read and watched a lot of really glowing reviews about the Mutant and CMMG makes really quality firearms.
 
I'm just not rely into 7.62X39, it drops like a rock and I don't think it has any real stopping power advantage over 5.56 with reasonable bullet choice. It's a decent round out of an SKS or AK for a woods deer rifle or something similar where your shots will all be close, but I don't see the point of putting it in an AR where one of the primary advantages is easy to mount optics when it can't rely shoot far enough to need good optics. To each his own though, if they were still 350-400 I'd have an AK to keep in my truck as a general knock around rifle.

AK's are one of those things where whenever I'm broke they get cheap and as soon as I have some money in my pocket they jump up to $600+ again.

Oh you worked for Vector? Very cool. I've never looked much into swapping calibers on the platforms, so to say aside second hand internet talk. I've mostly heard a bad rap and the 223 draco my buddy has is nothing but trouble.

I hope the gun treats you well and would love to see it when it's around!

I really need one, it may change your mind on the round, if not, it's still a blast to shoot. Mojo sights also make the SKS more tolerable.

I only have 2 gun pics handy and a bit deep in the bourbon to be showing things off, but my type 99 (and no I had to sadly let them go because laws and stuff) threatening to local deer out back. And the trigger on my SMLE mk3.

Well, the Mutant doesn't swap calibers. Its a purpose built rifle to give the shooter the advantages of shooting a Stoner rifle while being chambered in the heavier 7.62x39mm without the drawbacks of having unreliable magazines (the 7.62x39mm mags designed to work in a standard AR lower are notoriously unreliable) and having the locking lugs on the bolt snapping off from having the bolt face reamed out to accommodate the wider rim of the AK round. They took their .308 AR platform and scaled it down to the appropriate size to accommodate the larger round and be durable, but small and light enough to be a viable tactical rifle.

Because .300 Blk is a fuck-ton more expensive to shoot and not nearly as widely available as 7.62x39mm. I don't care for boutique rounds like .300 Blk, 6.8mm SPC and 6.5mm Grendel. And I'm not worried about saving money on the firearms I buy. I believe in buying high quality firearms and don't mind spending the money. If I could get the money up fast enough I'd really love to buy an Ohio Ordnance HCAR, which is just a lightened and modernized M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle. Sadly, it would take me a while to get $4500 saved up, plus the extra $1500 for the magazines. And on a final note, my CMMG Mutant is only $1600. $900 less than that would be $700, and I sure as fuck wouldn't want any AR that only costs $700. At that price point you won't be getting any decent features on that rifle. "Decent" ARs START at $1000 for some brands, and $1400+ for good brands like Lewis Machine and Tool and Primary Weapons Systems.

Not yet, but will soon. I've only had it about a month. I'm pretty impressed with it. It's nice and light and the extended magazine release makes it easy to kick out the spent mag with a fresh one, making reloads fast and a little flashy.

I LOVE the AUG. I believe I'm the reason we have little AUGs in our forum smileys. Its my favorite 5.56mm rifle and the first gun I bought when I started rebuilding my collection. Mine has a 20" barrel and the CQC rail system. I'm going to be putting H&K 416 iron sights and an Aimpoint M4S red dot on it later this year after I'm done buying guns.

Same, the AUG (specifically the A1) is possibly my favorite Asssault rifle of all time, Infact the Irish Defence Force have been using the AUG as their standard service rifle since the late 80's.
The Irish AUG's are locked to semi automatic only, and recently they have upgraded their old A1's with new A3 receiver's and ACOG's.

A funny story about the AUG; when Australia adopted the Austeyr F88 variant of the AUG to replace their L1A1 FALs, when the soldiers went to qualify on the range with their new rifles they had to change the way they scored marksmanship because they were all qualifying as "expert" because of the integral scope.

My first experience with the AUG, outside of seeing it in the first Die Hard film, was when my Dad brought one home from work. He was a federal agent with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (at that time it was Immigration and Naturalization Service) when his department received a few and he had to familiarize himself with it. I fell in love and always wanted one. I had owned an American made knock off for a few years, but sold it with the rest of my old collection to make ends meet when I was unemployed. When I started working again and got to where I could buy a new collection I decided I wanted to get a REAL Steyr AUG this time.
