I really hope Ruger goes back to making wooden mini-14s but with AR BCGs and they come with 5 round SKS style non-detachable mags with a top feed mech, because it will become the new "Fuck the NFA I'm gonna work around this dumbshit" build that anyone with a working understanding of how to use a screw druver can easily convert in to a decent little carbine
Stripper clips are pretty sexy...

Ruger still manufactures the wood stocked Mini 14, to my knowledge mini 14s aren't classified as assault weapons in California either.

There's no way an AR BCG would work in an Mini 14, it's action is very different.

They're rather ugly but the Ares SCR is more or less what you're describing.

I knew about the Ares, but for some reason I thought that Ruger had stopped building the wood mini's. Plus Im old(Fudd, w/e) enough to always think Ruger=Inexpensive but good

I figured that might be the answer. Shotguns also give you the benefit of the doubt because they're a horrible choice for spree/vigilante killing.

Would a slug induce hydrostatic shock quicker than buckshot would drop them from blood loss? And more importantly, would it be as lethal? As horrible as it sounds, I don't want someone trying to kill me to survive the first shot because they'll probably just come back later to finish the job (or sue me) and I certainly don't want to fire multiple times if I don't have to.

I know the basics of guns and what happens when you get shot by one but I've never done much research on the specifics of each ammo type.
Ya stay away from black tacticool looking shit and specialty self defence rounds if your worried about optics in the court system.
Mossberg 500 or Rem 870 with a 18.5" barrel so you can swing it around indoors. With wood furniture just like everyone's grandpa used to own. With normal old fudd 00 buck. Because thats what grandpa used to go deer hunting.

At "in home" range 12 00buck will take someone's arm off or put a fist size hole in their head.
00 buck isn't just 1 projectile. It's 9 .33" ones. So chances of doing the most damage and quicker blood loss is larger with 9 holes vs 1 with a slug. IMO.

A shotgun with buckshot will hit quite a few people if they're bunched up and they have an effective range much farther out than most people would think. If you want something more then get a rifle, but go with one chambered for 5.56 so you can use both 5.56 and .223 without blowing up. Good luck finding the 5.56 though, damn things are going for upwards of 60 cents a round now.

I have like 3K 7.62x39, 100 rnd .40, and a few hundred 22 lr ready to go. I need to get more 308. I need to find someone to trade my excess 44 mag with

kenosha kyle has convinced me to drop my acog and go for a red dot holosight.

what's good these days? lasttime i looked at a holosight, the big name company was being sued by the usmc for selling them defective ones.

People either highly recommend Eotech or hate Eotech, the Eotech 512 specifically. I haven't dropped $500 on one yet because my astigmatism's getting worse and I'm too lazy to see an optometrist.

If you want to be super tacticool and keep your acog go for an offset mount with a slightly smaller red dot.

This may be the wrong place to ask this, but I was wondering where some good places to learn about guns would be.
Basically, my family never really had guns around and all that. It just seems like such a large topic that I’m having trouble finding a good place to start.

Not mine, but the SCR stock is very improved with wood.

Got a Surefire M600DF Scout Light for my Origin 12. Still need to switch the tail cap and get a remote tape switch for it. I'll also probably switch the mount to something that isn't the thumb screw mount. Maybe a Bobro or LaRue Tactical. So here's my home defense setup. Still need to get some more mags for the shotgun, but Fostech is out of the 10rnd mags right now. Also need to get a light for the SIG P226. Probably one of the new Surefire Masterfire X Series lights that mate to their new holster and keep the holster on a battle belt along with pistol and shotgun mags.

I just went red dot shopping and Im pretty bummed I have severe astigmatism. Great.

Look at the lower powered compact ACOGs. Like the 1.5x and 2x models. You can still use them with both eyes open like a red dot and the magnification is low enough for close up work. I have astigmatism as well, but mine isn't bad enough that it keeps me from using red dots. If yours is bad enough that red dots are a no-go then the low powered compact ACOGs will be your best bet. A bit more expensive than a red dot, but you never need to buy batteries since they work off fiber optic and tritium illumination.

I'd go with an Aimpoint CompM4 if you don't want to stick with Trijicon. Really the big takeaway from Kyle is you should always have a sling.

If anybody is looking for budget red dots, Holosun makes shockingly high quality stuff. Even their RMR-size optics are good.
Holosun makes some good stuff, but they're not something I would want to rough it with if things got bad. Quality is good, but ruggedness is not something I would say a Holosun displays. But if you're not looking to go innawoods for six months, Holosun probably makes something you would be happy with at a decent price.

Agreed. For my weapons that I might have to trust my life to some day, I always go for things the military uses, or as close to it as I can. So I use Trijicon, Aimpoint, Elcan, and US Optics for my rifle glass. SIG's optics line is also seeing military use, and their offerings are often less expensive than the more "established" glass out there. EOTech has come a long way to try to win back customer trust and their EXPS-2 and EXPS-3 holosights are good to go.
