Venezuela consists of 23 states, one Capital District, and one claimed territory—all descendants of the 10 original provinces that comprised the Captaincy General of Venezuela at the signing of the Act of Independence on July 5, 1811. The modern territorial organization emerged following the end of the Federal War in 1863, during which the government decided to adopt a federal system based on the U.S. model of 1776; however, it evidently failed in the process, resulting in a country that is, *de facto*, highly centralized, with all states dependent upon the capital, Caracas.
Officially, the supreme law of the land is the political constitution known as the "Constitution of 1999" or the "Chavista Constitution," so named because it was drafted under the leadership of Hugo Chávez in 1998; it establishes a division of powers comprising the Executive, Legislative, Judicial, and Communal branches.
To ensure representation within each of these branches, representatives must be elected through a unicameral system—via free elections that are (in theory) regulated by autonomous electoral institutions. Currently, there are hundreds of political parties, which often form coalitions based on their loyalty to the government; however, two coalitions stand out:

Currently, there are hundreds of political parties, which often form coalitions based on their loyalty to the government; however, two coalitions stand out:
- Gran Polo Patriótico (Great Patriotic Pole): Composed of parties loyal to Chavismo, with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela serving as its central axis and the ultimate authority within both the country and the domestic political sphere.
- Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (Democratic Unity Roundtable): Originally the leading opposition coalition against Chavismo, it currently consists of a few parties that align with the government's agenda, effectively acting as a so-called "controlled dissent." It comprises Acción Democrática, Primero Justicia, Voluntad Popular, Un Nuevo Tiempo, Bandera Roja, and various other minor parties.
- VENTE Venezuela: María Corina's party, which remains relevant solely due to its leader—an upper-class woman whose greatest "achievement" was calling Chávez a thief to his face, and who once offered to hand over her Nobel Prize in an attempt to secure a position with "the Orange Man" (Spoiler alert: she failed miserably).
- ORDEN Venezuela (or the "Twitter Nationalists")
- Rumbo Libertad (or Eduardo Bittar's party)
- Libertarian Party of Venezuela
