i use a keychron c2 (it seems like null also bought a keychron)
you can get them for 60 dolla on amazon which is pretty reasonable for a mechanical.
the backlight is also black and white not gamer rgb stuff and it has multiple lighting/dim options.
you can buy it with browns or reds i think some have banana too which are like browns i think
you can hot swap the switches so you just pull them the same way you pull a key cap and just swap them out for new switches.

Usually someone would run firmer switches like THE BLACKS! with heavier ceramic keycaps. Keychron blacks or preferably like Kailh box black switches or anything with decently heavy springs.

I used one of these for a while together with a microcontroller who translates the kind of more uncommon PS/2 stuff it puts out to USB. Mine is from 1987. They're unbreakable, not even the plastic on the keys gets shiny with time. It took up too much room though and while for some stuff (especially games, specific editors and such) the additional F-Row (F13-24) was useful I generally struggled to really find a use for the additional keys and missed the taken up room. (It's huge) It was a never-used left-over from a company in the building of a company I worked for who kinda threw old stuff out. Took me years to finally got around to the microcontroller only to find out later somebody else already did it and also better. They were inteded to go with the IBM 3270, which was an IBM XT that came with emulation software to be used just like a terminal, but was also "smart" enough to be used as a standalone PC. I tried it on several PCs and OSes and it didn't really work properly directly with any of them although it's technically kind of a PS/2 board because amongst other things it didn't signal when a key is released IIRC. Also heaps of problems with Linux and the keyboard configuration. It weights 5 kg. (10 pounds)

Not sure I like the 360 as much as the II..I don't think they should have gotten rid of dedicated function keys and i like the old programming.
but I can get the 360 with clicky whites at least

man if somebody makes buckling spring in a swappable format I'll be a happy camper

Not sure if this is the right place but prefer posting here because Discord is a sex pest infested hell hole, looking for some ideas. Maybe this post belongs in the general electronics thread?

Anyway - I'm not a keyboard nerd. However, I do have a long-term streak for hobby electronics. I built/soldered/etc a small 10key Murphpad kit from MechWild last year. It was a nice challenge and what appealed so much to me was I got to do all my own soldering. It was a kit build (mostly) from the ground up., Some of the SMB components were already soldered, but it was mostly DIY on a prefab PCB...like Lego for adults with more fire and heavy metals. I think I used Vial to change some of the functions, as well but am rusty on remembering that.

Out of convenience more than any other reason, i wanted to to buy/build the Mechwild Mercutio kit, but they have apparently stopped taking orders for anything on the website.

Has anyone here built or know of a kit that can be built which is similar to a Mechwild DIY Kit? Google shows an overwhelming number of choices but I'd rather take word of mouth here than a paid suggestion from the fucking empire anyway.

There a keyboard that 80 or above, or preferably full that you guys recommend? I need one since I'm sick and tired of my 60. Don't get me wrong, it's a good keyboard, but MAN I'm sick of the FN key and I kinda miss the numpad The most important thing for me is that I need to be able to have the software work on Linux (for lighting and macros), and swappable switches. I currently have a stack of Akko V3 Lavender Purple Pro Switches that I've been dying to try that someone earlier in the thread suggested. Plus I want to try something different. My personal right now is a Wooting 60E. I love Wooting and their keyboards have always been great to me, but I'm ready to try something different.

For work I bought myself a Topre Realforce R3, and man it is one of my favorite buys. Wouldn't want it for my personal PC since the keys are just a TAD too heavy for my liking, but for typing RFOs, commands, and IPs a lot it's perfect. My only real complaint is that the keys have no lighting. Sometimes I just need to look down for whatever reason and it makes it a bit harder when the text is black and the keyboard itself is almost as dark. Been using it for nearly a year now.

You have any 60s and 80s you’d recommend in particular? Wanting a smaller board and I’m iffy on what the good options are.

For all I know I'm about to ask the most basic and amateur of questions, but the Cherry MX switches. I have mechanical keyboard and it has the Cherry Black switches. My use is lots and lots of typing Is this optimal? Reading online it says their use is gaming. Would I be better off with blues or something? Or is even asking about Cherry MX switches a faux pas and they're the Value product of the mechanical switches world? I don't find black pad but maybe a little resistant after a lot of typing.

It’s been a long time since I fiddled with keyboard autism, but black switches are stiff linear while blues are stiff clicky. Most people preferred clicky switches for typing and if you’re tired after long sessions browns (lighter touch and clicky) may be what you want.
