I was so glad when the kids in Zeta Gundam were "killed", and especially the niglet. Then they survived and were actually on the ship. Should've just killed the fuckers off.

I finished SRW The Inspector, and even though I enjoyed it, it was surprisingly lacklustre compared to Divine Wars. Excellen is probably the most annoying anime character I have ever seen, there was so much unnecessary fanservice, and in general I like the SRX team better than the ATX team. They have better robots and better pilots, plus the SRX team reminds me of if you made something like the Brave Police or the Goldran Braves into a military outfit. Also, The Inspector seems to have had a much weaker story than OG1/Divine Wars -- the Einst and Shadow Mirror are really cool, but not as cool as finding out the Aerogaters are actually humanoids aboard an artifical planet and that Ingram is actually a bad guy. I never thought I'd say this, but I was kinda annoyed after a while at how many of the episodes just felt like fight fight fight with little substance or story behind it all -- everything began to feel inconsequential and just a mandela of nonstop explosions and colours. I liked Dygenguar, those Yuusha-homaging animal robots (their name slips my mind), and the more vehicle-like grunt Lion robots, but why did you have to give Gravion chicken legs, Obari?
Also, I'm watching Getter Robo Armageddon after avoiding it because of finding the Giant Robo OVA to be average and being disappointed by the original Mazinkaiser (SKL is really cool though), and it's mind-blowingly cool so far; hopefully it remains this cool.

If there's an anime that you can say is "carried by animation" (a moot point because animation doesn't matter), it would be DYRL. It's even more autistic and cringeworthy with the romance stuff than the show, which was unbearable. I have no idea why they forced that (and idols, for some reason) into a show about transforming plane robots on a transforming spaceship with a city inside it fighting alien giants we barely know anything about. Were they worried that would be so cool everyone's televisions would blow up and Japan would singlehandedly deplete the world's plastic supply? Minmay is such an unnecessary character. The Zentradi could have learned about human culture just by sneaking aboard the SDF to learn the combat secrets of those puny humans after experiencing several humiliating defeats, only to realize that they like how humans treat each other and that humans are so effective in war because we have a culture full of treasures that are worth defending, treasures that can't exist in a society based around war.

They had all the elements there and made a fine show. But didn't truly put it together until they made Macross 7, one of the absolute best anime ever. Macross 7 was so manly and badass that all future Macross installations went back to uncompelling idols.

After seeing what counts as "hot blooded" in Gurren Lagann as opposed to what hot blooded is in the 70ies and 80ies mecha anime: Gurren Lagann fanboys are the soyboys.

You mean the 70s anime they watered down like TV Getter Robo? Only the 90s/00s adaptions like the Getter OVAs and Shin Mazinger really captured what that hotblooded spirit like the manga had.

Now that I've had a good night's sleep, I'll just say that Gundam Seed and Destiny's most important narrative character is Lacus Clyne, the pop singer. I'm sorry you can't understand how Macross influenced those shows.

That explains it, ZAFT and Coordinators are Zentraedi hence why they're so vulnerable to Lacus's evil manipulation via music.

I can vouch and say, its very good, like its my favorite anime of all time good (i might be a little bias); the first 3 episodes are pretty crazy and the rest of the story is very good throughout. Watching it was what got me into Getter and re-watching it now after reading the manga; makes me appreciate it a lot more since the OVAs borrow elements from the mangas (shin vs neo borrows from go and the final chapters of og getter robo, armageddon borrows some stuff from og getter chapters).

I know some people find the story "confusing", which is pretty understandable because Ryoma is just as confused as the viewer in the first 3 episode; one of my favorite quotes is "shut up! explain it to me in simple words so i can understand!"

I agree, which makes it weird Macross 7 is so disliked. How can you not think Basara defeating the enemies with POWER TO THE DREAM and a bunch of themed spaceships/colonies are cool?! Frontier could have been just as cool since it had the best VFs, mindless space monsters, and each VF clearly served a different function, so it could have been a great MOTW show in the deepest corners of the galaxy (especially considering how similar it looks and feels to Aquarion), but for some reason we had to have another bland J-Pop idol (though Infinity and Diamond Crevasse are good) and an annoying green-haired girl nobody cares about.

I think the 70s Dynamic Pro TV shows are better than the equivalent manga because they lean more into problem-solving and strategy than just over-the-top violence. Mazinger is a cool franchise not because of Koji being a hot-blooded gigachad, but because Mazinger is stuffed with weapons and Koji comes up with creative ways to use them. TV Getter is a bit weaker than TV Mazinger, mainly because it didn't have the constant tension and stakes, but it's still cool.

A lot of Gurren Lagann fans don’t seem to realize the very thing that inspired it; Getter Robo. But also Gunbuster set the blueprints for both Kamina and Simon respectively. Without those both, Gurren Lagann probably wouldn’t exist. Its something that’s always bothered me, most casual fans of anime or normies will probably never pay attention to that which came before.

For anyone who isn't a casual watcher, Gurren Lagann's a pretty good gateway into what came before once you know what the influences were.

Getter Robo Armageddon from a narrative standpoint is one of those series that tells its backstory in reverse and you don't really appreciate the full scope until after you've finished watching it, and then probably watched it one more time for good measure, especially since it presents itself from the initial few episodes as having all this backstory that isn't actually present.

I tried showing a friend Armageddon for the first time last year and they felt incredibly confused because there was all this talk of things they had absolutely no context for. We haven't continued it since because it's kind of difficult to swing the concept on them that they should just turn off their brain initially and enjoy the ride for now.

If you mean animal looking ones you mean KoRyuOh and its alternative form RyuKoOh. As for the serie as a whole Super Robot Wars has potential but its bugged down by lack of support anime wise. Doesnt help that the really crazy shit, when things get good, just so happen to start after Inspector when we get units like Compatible Kaiser and the Shura mechs. It saddens me that we will probably never get another SRW anime because the reality of it is that the series is niche and the games are a better investment than to put money into making an anime. I do recommend playing the main line games since they explore the story more and give context to certain things that get casually dropped.

Finally Rip the VA of Excellence. Yes her character might had been annoying and a horny bitch, but damm if she didnt make the character stand out.

I don't think I could tell you a thing about Macross Frontier beside the idols are both horrible people but make catchy music and the aliens are kinda weird and the actual show was boring beside the music and the compilation movies. It just wasn't a memorable show, way too serious for a concept as inherently silly as idols using the power of music to convince aliens to stop fighting.

I was a bit worried about how it would fare after the director change past episode 3, but it did not disappoint -- it managed to blow my mind consistently, both with big action and plot twists. It was like watching GaoGaiGar for the first time all over again. Shows like this, GaoGaiGar, Shin Jeeg, and Gravion Zwei that gradually get more and more over-the-top and are just nonstop action and worldbuilding loosely rooted in real science are truly special; they're absolute perfection. The real question is why more shows like this aren't made, considering they fit in well into the one-cour format favoured by anime nowadays. I guess I'll watch New Getter Robo next.

Also, merry Christmas. I watched Evangelion/End of Eva for the first time around Christmas, so ever since then I've made Eva into an unofficial Christmas anime. Eva does the other end of mecha stories well -- rather than constant epic escalation, it becomes de-escalation, and you really get a sense of "it's all over at last and we finally have peace and can move onto a fresh start".

That's an understatement lol. The Getter Tomahawk is made of some seriously sturdy stuff given how much energy (and therefore heat) is produced by cleaving through the moons of Jupiter.

The stuff after episode 3 is fantastic, but the first 3 episodes really make me wonder how it would've gone without the director change given it was the same guy as G Gundam and Shin Mazinger and uses the same style heavy in flashbacks.

So you probably have an idea that SRW is a crossover game series by now [if not, hi, SRW is a crossover game series] that eventually had so many OC heroes and villains that they could make their own original story that only tangentially counts as fanfiction anymore [for example, the Huckebeins being kind of Gundams in design, to the point where they had to replace it in this series for the EXbein for some reason].

The Inspector is a simplified form of the second game of the OG series, with most of the stages you would play as being written out or shortened so that they could get to the point. Most of the stages do have the 'fight fight fight' but it also doesn't help that part of the idea is to lead into Kyosuke getting the Alteisen wrecked due to being overworked, so a LOT of the game is a drain where everything just keeps going wrong for you. But yeah, the series is so short when it needed at least another set of 13 episodes and better quality, so we have stuff like Ibis being barely relevant and the Inspectors not really getting good fights and replaced by the REAL final boss, Evil Kyosuke.

That said, it's kind of funny you say Team SRX has better pilots because in all continuities, the general idea is that Rai is the only 'great' pilot of the team, with Ryusei and Aya being competent at best - it's just that the SRX works on literal psychic magic, so they can use their not-Newtype powers to pilot it. By comparison, Kyosuke and Excellen are good pilots and Bullet is decent for a rookie but having temper issues, with the Mechanoids being super robots making up for his initial situation.

Honestly they could make an anime serie on any of the main line game stories. From Moon dwellers, Frontier, Z Trilogy series. I hope they eventually consider doing them because seeing Granteed Dracodeus fuck shit up while Limit Over plays would make me cream my pants, especially if it has good animation.


Ive always preferred Kyosuke and excellen over the SRX team since they got more development and they are far more interesting. I agree that the inspector anime was short and it shoud had explored more how Beowulf ended the way he is, that couldve easily added a few more episodes to the serie leading up to the first scene of the inspectors, which shook me when i first saw.
