Sometimes when twitter users mentions kiwifarms they censor us as to not drive traffic here. However interestingly these people only do that method with potentially underage pornographic content which means they don't trust their own users to not coom to it, while simultaneously trusting them to not go here to become harassers. Given the kind of people to use mastodon the latter is understandable, and the former is likely also understandable since surely they know their own userbase.

2 of the sites censored there are far-right instances. One is definitely goytalk, and the other one I think is a Spanish nationalist domain but I'm not 100% on that one.

"CounterSocial went live on November 17, 2017. It was originally based on open source code from 'Mastodon', founded by Eugen Rochko, who operates out of Germany. The code is freely available under an AGPLv3 open source license agreement. Keyword: Agreement, as in EULA (End User License Agreement). From the outset, CounterSocial was designed with a zero tolerance stance regarding trolls, misinformation, fake news, bots, harassment, foreign influence operations, and other diseases that plague almost every other platform on the internet.
One of Mastodon's core features, and arguably the PRIMARY differentiator used to market adoption, is the decentralization aspect of the platform, known as The Federation. The company allows anyone to deploy a Mastodon server and modify it however they see fit (as long as they comply with AGPLv3 agreement). By doing so, they join a federation of other independent Mastodon instances, that are seamlessly inter-connected.
Because of CounterSocial's zero tolerance stance regarding trolls, misinformation, fake news, bots, and harassment, we configured our infrastructure firewall to block certain nations known for producing troll and bot farms or engaging in foreign influence operations, and/or enforce laws that make participating in social media dangerous to their citizens. We block a total of 6 nations out of almost 200.
Mastodon's founder, Eugen Rochko, took exception to this element of our terms of service claiming, amongst other things, that we were xenophobic and racist. Rather than contact us to investigate, these damaging accusations were made publicly in open forums. After we explained to him that in his own documentation he encourages Mastodon administrators to apply their own terms of service we let him know that the AGPLv3 license agreement doesn't grant him the right to dictate how we configure our infrastructure. Because it just doesn't. It's also far from the first time Mr. Rochko has attempted to dictate how users of Mastodon implement the open source code.
This didn't seem to sit well with Eugen because he proceeded to delist us from the Mastodon official instance list, our stats page was also disabled, and we were blocked from federating with instances under Rochko's control. A smear campaign was then launched through Mastodon and other channels requesting other admins do the same. Many complied with Rochko while also engaging in slanderous attacks against CounterSocial and its users.
The AGPLv3 license agreement under which 'Mastodon' allows its code to be freely used and re-used is just that, an agreement. Given that the platform’s core selling point is the decentralized approach and inclusion in The Federation community, that agreement was broken the moment its founder publicly ostracized CounterSocial to his combined over half a million followers while calling on other federated instances to do the same. These actions effectively confirmed that Mastodon was no longer the product described and released with the AGPLv3 license agreement, nor fit for the agreed upon purpose. Given Rochko’s stature, the very public accusations and 'retribution' waged against CounterSocial witnessed in real time by thousands of users on multiple platforms, not least our own, these actions could be potentially construed as tortious interference with business.
After a cooling-off period, it became apparent that the damage was still ongoing, and likely irreversible, due to a significant portion of the Federation complying with Rochko's request to block CounterSocial IP space or domains. Additionally our ability to communicate with these fellow community admins was now effectively cut off. CounterSocial had no ability to change this outcome. Despite being encouraged to create the terms of services that best protects our users as described in Mastodon’s documentation, by not complying with their personal world-view and sensibilities, CounterSocial was de facto/virtually forked from a large portion of The Federation.
Being that it no longer had any reasonable function, CounterSocial officially forked and removed the federated features entirely from our instance in accordance with what Eugen Rochko obviously wanted. We reconciled knowing that the very thing we set out avoid during CounterSocial’s inception - trolls, abuse, and harassment - was hugely prevalent throughout the “Fediverse” and often (at the time at least) instigated or fueled at through its founder. While participating with the larger Federated community was an exciting prospect at launch, we are better off in the long run.
CounterSocial continues alone and produces, what many believe to be, a better user experience. We manage to do this without breaking AGPLv3 agreements through embeddable objects that live in separate stacks, databases, and even subdomains along with edge-worker processes. This results in negligibly minor changes to the Mastodon core codebase outside of code-snippets that simply provide an integrated view to those proprietary features and functions. As per compliance and in accordance with the AGPLv3 license agreement, the CounterSocial core source code dating back to 2017 is found on our Github with full credit to Mastodon along with a link to their copyright notice, original code, and license agreement. We set about advancing CounterSocial and adding new functions and features without interfering with the AGPLv3 code. To demand access to these purposefully separated enhancements (for just such an occasion) 4 years later is tantamount to demanding we clean up the apartment you kicked us out of for no good reason four years ago. Counter.Social is one of the most insane far-lefty Mastodon-based platforms there is, complete with mandatory automated Snopes tooltips and a "fake news" policy that will get you banned for saying something a retarded boomer and his prostitute wife don't agree with politically. Rochko just has a bizarre desire to control every Mastodon fork despite intentionally making it so he can't. It's like Sisyphus rolling the boulder uphill.

I originally had high hopes for counter.social because it seemed alot like @Null 's original proposal for a "Volkstwitter" or "Volksfacebook" in the sense that after the inevitable balkanization of the internet between global and regional powers- the US would move to nationalize the big social media outlets used by the citizenry and used as THE public platform that would be regulated like a public utility. I love Mr. J's work and respect him immensely for a laundry list of reasons- and I can assure you of the fact that he very much prefers to be apolitical (from what I understand he has a very socially liberal family though). counter.social really is a one-man operation in the sense that it's run entirely by Mr. J... I even agreed with his policy of completely banning IP addresses from certain countries that are known to cooperate with the FSB and China because I understood- obviously, as a patriot he wouldn't want foreign psyops being permitted on his niche social media site.
However- screencaps like this dissuade me from wanting to use the platform. Mr. J has claimed numerous times that "only assholes" are not allowed to use counter.social, but it is becoming abundantly clear that the platform is going to be used moving forward for nothing but a glorified megaphone for The Neocon/Neoliberal Cathedral's official narrative. Snopes is obviously not a reliable fact-checker, as they have been caught countless times lying about the validity of laws passed by state governments (like New York's Misgendering fine system- which is a flagrant violation of the 1st amendment). I guarantee you if you post information about US war crimes in Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, etc. you will be banned. If any of you have a counter.social account, I highly encourage you to post information regarding the USS Liberty attacks and see how long you last, or information about the experiments with Syphillis and LSD the FBI did back in the 60's and 70's and how COINTELPRO never really ended. If you *really* want to piss the admins off- find information in the Pandora Papers or Afghanistan papers that makes the Military-Industrial complex in the US look bad, or AIPAC.
