All discussion of the candidates, updates and results should go here

For example- here's a video of Ted Cruz vying for world domination.

Also Hilary Clinton is a crook and nobody should have sex with her.

Discuss

(Note- The title will change as we get nearer the election, previous titles will be archived in the OP)

Do you guys think our nation could really elect someone as Proto-Hitler as the Trumpster? He's terrifying. And stupid. It feels like he is some sort of :ruse:; like he is too ridiculous to be real. I don't get how anyone is taking him seriously. But then again, republicans aren't known for being the most intelligent bunch.

Either way, I'm terrified for the result of this election.

This shit with the superdelegates and the public execution of the Sanders Revolution has utterly disgusted me with the Democrats.

That's funny because you've never seemed anything less than utterly disgusted by the Democrats since long before Bernie Sanders was anything more than the quirky senator from Vermont

People who think Trump = Hitler are funny and have no understanding of Trump or the U.S government, or Hitler.
I disagree. I think there are some similarities there. Not to say I think that Trump is going to gas all the Muslims/Mexicans or invade Canada, but there are some similarities.
  • The whole "Make America Great Again" is similar to the platform the National Socialists used.
  • As is him attacking other groups for Americas problems, like the Democrats and the Mexicans.
  • Appealing to the lowest denominator.
That being said, I think it's stupid to equate Trump to being the next Hitler, and my knowledge of the US Government is rather limited. Apologies for my autistic analysis.

The thing is, whereas the Germans actually longed to restore their former militaristic Reich, Trump's campaign slogan is little more than a catchy mantra that he stole from Reagan.

Elucidate me, please. As far as I know, I have a pretty good understanding of all of these things, and I would like to know where there are holes in my knowledge.

I see a man who is charismatic, pledges to "Make America great again!," has an intense distrust of minorities (especially Muslims), is playing into the insecurities of the American people, and thinks that one bad Muslim makes them all bad. He has dumbed down his speech so that the lowest common denominator will get hyped over him, because what he says sounds nice and succinct. He is easy to swallow. He is a fellow country-man; people relate to his easy speech and lazy manner. They see him as a good 'ol boy neighbor to be trusted, rather than a greedy, evil politician.

Hitler's rise to power was largely due to the economic issues in Germany and his enthusiasm and charisma; they wanted to be a fruitful and prosperous country after dealing economic recession and other issues, and this exciting man came into the picture and got them riled up with all his ideas of how it could happen. He played on old dislike for groups of people (the Jews killed Jesus, the Jews took our land and money, etc.) and used this to fuel his rise to power. He fabricated an enemy for the people to hate, and there is nothing like hatred to bring a group of people together. This is exactly what Trump is doing concerning Mexicans and Muslims, it just has not reached the extremes that Hitler did yet.

Yes, we have checks and balances, and it would likely never get as bad as the Holocaust (although we DID have Japanese internment camps on our very soil that came pretty close to what Hitler was doing over in Europe), but even so, the rhetoric that Trump is preaching is pretty scary stuff. He is also uneducated; the man is anti-vax and believes they cause :autism:.

He is also very pro-military, and like any conservative, he tends to be into government getting extremely involved in our personal lives (defunding Planned Parenthood, for instance; I would prefer that man to stay out of my ovaries). In my opinion, once we start getting into taking away reproductive rights, that opens a whole can of worms where the government is suddenly able to tell us what we can and cannot do with our bodies, and how many children we are to have, etc. It is a slippery slope.

So sure, maybe Trump isn't actual Hitler (no shit), but he is definitely scarily close in his political ideals, and I would rather a man of that type stay the fuck out of the White House.

While that is true, it all smells a little too much like the sorta propaganda from the 30's. This coinciding with Trump's inflammatory remarks about Mexicans and Muslims is what makes people argue this point. He's giving the American people an enemy to project their hatred and disdain for, like Nazi's.

Or Santorum. That man HORRIFIES me. He literally said he would get rid of birth control. If that's not an invasion of privacy then I don't know what is!

I was serious when I said I wanted someone like @Donald And The Immigrants to tell me how it is wrong to compare Trump to Hitler during his rise of power. I am all for lessening how terrified I feel at the prospect of this man being in charge of my country. So please, elucidate me on how I am wrong, because as far as I can see he is eerily similar to Hitler. (:_(

1980 to 2016. That's 36 years of Republicans saying America is shit.

Okay, well, Hitler rose to power in the Weimar Republic, a weak and anemic democracy in a country with no real history of or dedication to democracy in general. There were no strong institutions with a sense of preserving their interests that would fight back against a threatening dictator.

So Hitler could fairly rapidly dismantle what checks and balances there were without much uproar. It wasn't as if he was uprooting long standing institutions.

Drumpf is long on promises and short on shit the President can actually do. He either doesn't understand what the Presidency even is, or more likely, doesn't give a shit since the demographic in which he has highest popularity is people with a high school or even less education, who certainly wouldn't know that he was just making shit up.

In any Drumpf Presidency, he would have fairly major problems in that none of his actual proposals could be done without dismantling the whole Constitutional system, including those checks and balances. Congress isn't interested in handing over any of their power.

And nor would be the Supreme Court. Even if he somehow got his crackpot proposals like a gigantic wall (that isn't even a plausible engineering feat and would not work anyway since Mexicans you might have noticed are aware of the hyper-modern technology known as a "tunnel") past Congress, or tried to send all Muslims to concentration camps, it would instantly be declared unconstitutional.

ETA: badly phrased. The dumb wall idea wouldn't be unconstitutional, just really, really stupid and unworkable. It just isn't going to happen.

I'm not a Trump supporter, nor am I planning on voting for either he or Clinton this year (if it comes down to just those two, I'm voting for Ganondorf), but what I will say is that the hand-wringing I've been seeing from both sides has been fucking hysterical to watch.

I didn't know Germany's political party history too well, so thanks for that clarification!

My point is just that Trump has similar ideals to Hitler and comparisons can be made. No, the Holocaust will not be repeating itself, but he still is nutty, and electing him would likely unravel a lot of the good that has been done to our country.

The mere fact that comparisons between Hitler and Trump can be made so easily and accurately is a pretty massive red flag for me. It is somewhat in jest, but at the same time there lies some truth there.

Either way, he is daft and making a mockery of the political system, and i don't think someone who doesn't take his job seriously should really be in control of a country.

Side note: @AnOminous, let me say that i am continuously impressed with your vast amount of knowledge! :)

Edit: on mobile. Bah

Comparisons are always made to Hitler and it's always easy. Welcome to the internet. Hilter is male. Donald Trump is Male.

He's not German. He didn't win time's person of the year. Jew aren't fleeing his Country. He isn't advocating major demographic change through government force. But I know a politician who qualifies with all those.

The political system should be mocked. Hillary will continue endless wars, while speaking of helping those from the very places she'll bomb. She'll continue mass incarceration, one of the few places where there is institutionalize racism, while hypocritically complaining about racism where it doesn't even apply. She'll screw over the young. She will make the Banks more powerful while twisting it to sound like She's doing something against the banks.

Here's how the establishment wanted this election:

Hillary: Even though gay have all the rights, I will continue to fight for gay rights in this country!

Jeb!: I will do nothing about gay marriage, but I must add that I am not a fan of gay people.

Hitler would never have stood a chance without an impoverished and humiliated Germany forced to abide by a cruel treaty. Hitler could never have risen to power in a functional, prosperous, stable society. Furthermore, if it weren't for near complete power Hitler would never have done as much as he did.
The U.S is a functional, prosperous, stable society. We have a system of checks and balances to prevent the President from having too much power.
Trump himself is very different from Hitler. Hitler was intelligent, charismatic and he held a deep hatred for Jews, who, in his view, had destroyed his life and his nation. Trump is a billionaire who has never been remotely close to poverty, ever, and who has not experienced the downfall of his nation. Trump doesn't hold a deep and powerful hatred of Muslims or Mexicans, at most he's mildly disdainful.
Even if Trump decided to gas the Muslims one day, he would see massive opposition. Even if our government couldn't stop him, the people of the country can.

But of course.

Unfortunately, the Trump supporters like him because they see what the Germans saw in Hitler: a self-made man (I know he wasnt, but people tend to think he made his empire himself) who will "save" the US from "economic ruin" that the damn dirty Democrats have put it into. Trump isn't actually anywhere near what they see and want, but he is playing with them psychologically the same way Hitler did.

He obviously cannot cause Muslim Holocaust. But the fact that he is using similar tactics as Hitler did and that the Republican party is eating this up is pretty damn scary, despite the fact that it could never actually come in to play.

I guess my point is that he is the most blatantly racist candidate i have ever been aware of, and especially that has done this well in the primaries, and this scares me. This shows me that a good portion of my country doesn't mind having a leader who claims to hate certain races of people outright.

The vast majority of the support Trump is drumming up comes from relentless attack on politicians, not on races. Where's Donald Trump's Mein Kramp? It's not like he hasn't written a book. He's mostly just baiting liberals with race issues like the troll he is.

That's my hope.

But still, it doesn't matter that his race stuff isn't why he is getting support. It's the fact that he is still supported, despite how egregiously racist what he has said is.

I would expect people to find his racism so intolerable that they would find him completely unsavory as a candidate, but unfortunately this is not so. And that's what scares me most. Our country is happy to let in a racist bigot as long as he says mean stuff about other politicians that we don't like.

Literally around half of the American people got wet from Trump throwing around childish insults. It's embarrassing and frightening that these are the people that have a say in the decisions made in our country, and that they can so nonchalantly ignore extremely bigoted shit bring spewed from their candidate's mouth.

Well, I've been told I'm a racist a few times. Once was for using the word "minority" in a mathematical way. Turns out black people own that word. Is it any wonder people vote for a racist when so many have that label put upon them?

I think that's a bit of a non sequitor; you are assuming that all Trump supporters have wrongfully been called racists, so therefore they feel okay voting for a racist.

Which does nothing to disprove my point that the Republican party is still very much okay with voting for a racist. It doesn't matter the reasoning, in the end they are voting to have a bigot potentially be our president, and i take issue with around half our nation being for that. I guess i shouldn't be surprised, considering the rampant racism that still exists in the red states, but this is definitely a depressing wake up call for me.

My point is simply that i find it appalling that the more ridiculously offensive and idiotic of Trump's rhetoric hasn't proven to be deal breakers to the Republican party, but instead is overlooked, if not celebrated. If you don't want to use racism, another example is how he is essentially anti-vax.
It amazes me that despite all the shit he says, his supporters still keep rallying on.
