All discussion of the candidates, updates and results should go here

For example- here's a video of Ted Cruz vying for world domination.

Also Hilary Clinton is a crook and nobody should have sex with her.

Discuss

Usually, VPs were meant to balance out a ticket ideologically and woo some people that are more center in. I say usually because Palin was a really unfathomable choice for McCain.
I think they underestimated what an awful speaker she was, or how often she'd actually be opening her mouth, and just figured she'd bring in women + young voters which are always tougher demographics for the GOP. On that note, given the support Sanders has generated from young voters + minorities and how Clinton's been sort of falling flat on her face with both, I could maybe see it.

I'm voting for Ganondorf.

Also, while I have nothing substantial to back up my claim, I'd like to think that when Trump brought out Palin to endorse him on stage was the turning point for his presidential run. That lunatic's ramblings literally kill brain cells and the only people that aren't mentally poorer after listening to her are the ones that hide in bunkers and waiting for Zombie Osama to come and rape their dog.

In J-Mac's defense, rumor has it that his original VP pick was Joe Lieberman. That would've been a seriously maverick choice, but it would have sent the rest of the Republican Party into open revolt.

Pretty much. Palin also had the advantage of being unknown so McCain didn't have to side with any factions in the party or set up a potential front-runner for the nomination in 2012 if he didn't win by choosing her. He was in a shaky enough position he couldn't afford to alienate anyone.

I think he was argued out of it by his advisors, but it pissed him off enough he made a "fuck you" choice of Sarah Palin.

He was in a shaky enough position he couldn't afford to alienate anyone.

And unfortunately did exactly that. I know two Republicans who switched to vote for Obama precisely because of the Palin choice, because it showed reckless incompetence.

Trump will probably win in New Hampshire, and I think that that will be the real test of his viability. And yes, Hillary is a shoe-in for the Democratic nomination. If there are several hundred superdelegates pledged to her before primaries have even started, she'll almost certainly get the lion's share of the rest of the superdelegates, so Sanders will be fucked even if he wins the popular vote.

Since this morning, fivethirtyeight has upped Trump's likelihood of winning NH to 60% from 58%.

(Bernie remains at 91%.)

Between Trump, world domination, "please clap," Bernie rushing to the aid of an fainted man, 2016 will be the year future historians will write plays about. Such a balanced ensemble of characters embodying the wide range of the human experience.

I just want the people to be able to live without fear of where they will get basic medical care :(

If I was American I would skip voting this year and get trashed on listerine or something because none of the candidates I've seen seem particularly appealing. Is that just me?

We all know Jeb Bush is gonna win!!

It's that way for every election, we just vote for who we think is the least awful.

Holy crap, Santorum was running for president? I guess that says something about his campaign

On behalf of Pennsylvanians everywhere, I apologize for unleashing Rick Santorum upon America.

Americans vote for the people that have the sexist political campaign, actual substance and qualifications for office be damned.

No, it's not just you, we need a candidate with a revolutionary spirit and a track record to match, but sadly, I don't believe Jesus perched on a cloud stop the whining of the SJWS

I think that there would probably be fewer people giving up on the election, but I would expect that the true believers of Bernie Sanders, many of whom seem to loathe Hilary, would be less than satisfied with the set-up. Many of them might still vote for the Democratic ticket out of hopes that Sanders will be able to influence policy, but I think their general excitement would be gone.

But I'm just speculating.

This is true as hell.

I dunno if anyone remembers the election of 2000, but Sanders is either going to pull an '08 Hail Mary Obama victory (if he wins the primaries) or it's gonna be a Nader situation all over again. Nader mobilized a HUGE amount of youth in the 00s to come out and vote for him, but he didn't manage to make it past the primaries. Those people then neglected to vote at all, not wanting to 'throw their vote' to Gore, allowing Bush to come in and settle in for a nice 8 years.

If Bernie doesn't win the nomination (I am still a bit optimistic, given his movement in Iowa; while a loss, it does show that he can get voters mobilized for him and that could help him looking toward the primaries), I'm worried that it'll be that same Nader scenario again. People get upset, don't vote, watch in surprise as Republican gets sworn into office.

The difference here is that Sanders has ruled out a third-party run, and will encourage his supporters to vote for Clinton if/when he meets defeat in the primary. Nader got the Green Party's nomination, pulled in the largest amount of votes for a third-party candidate in this century, and handed the election over to Bush.

Whether or not Bernie's supporters will follow his lead has yet to be seen, but he's committed to a united Democratic Party. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be running as a Democrat to begin with.

Actually, they did vote. For Nader. Nader ran as the Green Party candidate, and had never even sought the Democratic Party nomination, believing the party to be hopelessly corrupt and indistinguishable from the GOP in every important respect.

Bernie has consistently run a high toned campaign and outright refused to make personal attacks on other candidates, which would make it a lot easier to gracefully throw his support behind the eventual nominee should he not win. This is despite the fact that he has never been elected previously as a member of any party.

I'd compare him highly favorably to Trump in that Trump has caused enormous damage to every other potential Republican candidate, and more or less done it on purpose. Trump is a lot closer to the Nader style than to Sanders, in that both Nader and Trump actually wanted to cause harm to the party on their own "side."
