All discussion of the candidates, updates and results should go here

For example- here's a video of Ted Cruz vying for world domination.

Also Hilary Clinton is a crook and nobody should have sex with her.

Discuss

Well, Palin was already a vocal Trump supporter as of a few months back.

It always is. A while back, that dick Martin Shkreli bought the company that produced Daraprim - the only company that produced a drug needed by AIDS and cancer patients - and subsequently raised the price from $13.50 to $750 per fucking pill. And then spent the money he basically stole from sick people to buy that dumb 'art piece' only-produced copy of a Wu-Tang album he's never going to listen to. The people who sold him the damn thing didn't learn about this shit until after the sale was done, ultimately giving most of the money to charity in turn. Likewise, Congress ultimately got involved and that dickbag was forced to step down.

Except last I heard, the price of that critical drug is still $750 a pill under the new management which seems just as greedy as the last. The fact our current system allows those fucks to screw over a small subset of the population who need that drug to live when only a few years ago it was produced at a cost 50 times below that inflated scalper's ransom really shows how the government is powerless and unwilling to touch big business hiding behind commercialization law.

If I recall, isn't the patent for Daraprim expired and other companies have started producing the drug to counter the price hike?

If they don't lower their fucking prices per pill to something people can afford (as in NOT FUCKING $750), then I assume no, unfortunately.

In general but not this specific case, it's alright for the pharmaceutical industry to overcharge for drugs made to combat rare ailments. The alternative is that you ask companies to make cheap drugs for diseases that only have a few thousand sufferers and they'll never make their money back in a reasonable amount of time. Which is to say: they actually won't make any drugs for people with rare ailments because they aren't a charity.

Now the reason Daraprim was fucked was because it was originally developed as an anti-malarial and anti-Toxoplasma gondii drug and sold for fairly cheap because while there is competition in anti-malarials (but less in Toxoplasma) it was first developed in the 50's so the original owner already made back their money a long time ago. But researchers found out that it was also effective against a rare disease and Turing Pharmaceuticals bought up the rights to the name Daraprim and jacked the price up since they are the only one making it. Now, if you listen to Shkreli the reason for this was to fund other drug research with the profits. Which is probably a thing that has happened but is still shitty if you're the one having to pay. Also, Shkreli stepped down because he is under investigation for securities fraud which is unrelated to this shit.

While there isn't yet a generic Daraprim yet because getting any drug FDA approved is non-trivial, you can sort-of get the drug for $1 a pill through compounding pharmacies. It's also even cheaper then the old price if you buy it from another country like Canada.

It's a good thing no one actually pays $750 out of pocket for it. That's just how much he demands from the insurance companies. According to his own website, you don't have to pay more than $10 out of pocket if you have insurance, and he gives it away free if you don't. He's really just trying to squeeze money out of the insurance companies, not fuck over sick people.

Was that his day-one policy?

I bet it wasn't.

That third paragraph... That's true, indefinitely - the problem, though, is that as an American, I don't know how you can do that without getting in some kind of police-like trouble, unfortunately. And that sucks, because there are countless Americans who could use cheaper medicine and healthcare out there (whether they know it or not). Not only is Obamacare NOT helping with this (access to cheaper medicine for those who need it most, by the by.), but the fact that this isn't an election issue when it should be - yeah. It's pretty sad.

Pardon my compassionate anger here - :autism: or not, this shit with healthcare being ore widely available to more than just fuckin g rich people really pisses me off.

I can't wait to see how this election affects party policy. While each side's been actively courting extremists, I don't expect it to stay this way, at least not for everyone.

What I think'll happen is that the winning party (which I bet will be the Dems) is going to continue to pander to lunatics, while the losers are going to quietly purge extremists and push the most moderate candidate they can find as a sort of compromise. I really, really can't see either Hilary or Trump getting reelected, especially if either one goes up against anyone else. They really are a match made in heaven.

I sincerely hope that America as a country learns from this mess.

Both parties need a purge, but I'm not confident in either party purging the right people. I can easily see the GOP purging the moderate members regardless of it Trump wins.

I don't know if I can see the GOP doing that, as the GOP itself seems really non-committed to Trump. The Dems are at least decently behind Hilary. Say what you will about her, there aren't open letters originating from Democratic Party officials calling for people to vote the other way.

Neither party is stupid, just terribly misguided in their own ways. The GOP has sort of become a mess of moderates, hardliners, and extremists in recent years in a way that the Dems aren't, and I think the party knows this. If Trump loses, I don't think the GOP is going to become more radical. I think they'll just cut their losses and focus on becoming more moderate.

both the Republican and Democrat parties seem to view themselves as rival sport teams. And just like how a Cowboys fan would never fraternize with a Redskins fan (and vice versa), Republicans and Democrats are unwilling to play nice and compromise with each other. Call me crazy, but I've always believed that political parties should work together to improve their country and be willing to set aside their differences for the greater good. But instead, we keep getting political deadlocks and nothing ever gets done, at which point both parties point fingers and blame each other for being so obstinate.

Except the Democrats tried that already. Obama made every attempt to reach across the aisle and what did he get? "SECRETMUSLIMKENYANCOMMUNISTFASCIST! BIRTH CERTIFICATE! FEMA DEATH CAMPS!"

The Democrats tried to treat the Republicans like adults in the naive assumption that they actually give a damn about the country. And now I think they've finally gotten the message that it's pointless to even try to work with them. It's a lesson that Clinton won't forget.

The federal government left it up to every state government to implement it, so in many states with Republican legislatures, it didn't get much support from the state government and was bound to fail from the start in those places

Because most Republicans are loyal only to the following things in the following order: Personal bigotry, self, party. They managed to convince their drones that Obamacare meant Grandma was going to be put down and women would have access to birth control (and therefore not be punished for the horrible crime of sex). And worst of all, those icky poor people might be treated too! The Republican base was terrified and begged the party to save them from the evil Obamacare.

Well they got what they wanted. Higher costs and less access. And they still think it's worth it because no price is too high if it hurts those they hate. Seriously, fuck these people.

And where do Insurance companies get their money?

I'm not saying Shkreli is wholly responsible for the medical industry being filled with insanely high prices but his "oink oink I'm a pig too" is still shitty.

You're kind of demonstrating what I'm talking about. Both parties are full of self-serving cunts, acting like only the Republicans have been fucking over our country is disingenuous.

I think you're right in that they'll try to purge the more radial party members, but I also thought they would have gotten their shit together and back a candidate who could beat Trump.

They tried, they just didn't count on Trump's campaign being so massive. Had Trump not stepped into the primary, Jeb could have been the third Bush in the White House (as horrible as that would have been.)

Yeah, I have no idea why they picked Jeb as the hill to die on. I can only speak for my area, but no one was excited about Jeb, even people I know voted for his brother.

They were originally grooming Chris Christie for the presidential nomination back in 2012, but a few major scandals (including closing down a major bridge from New Jersey to New York, causing unbelievable traffic jams for days) all but torpedoed his chances this year.

Jeb is the epitome of an uninspired candidate: Uncharismatic, bland and another member of a presidential "dynasty". It's no wonder why nobody could get behind him. Everyone else was either a total joke (Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina), guys who couldn't gain any traction from voters, or Diet Trump (Ted Cruz). The whole field was pathetic.

Oh look! It he has an advisor that thinks the Left are to blame for the decline of industry, and that they want "ethnic cleansing" of the working class whites.

I would say this was shocking, but at this point why not? We already turned removed all meaning with the term from the Yugoslav Wars. I'm not even shocked anymore. I'm actually tired. I've nearly severed the land line personally, have enough junk mail to keep me through the winter at this rate, and can't listen to NPR anymore because I get a mindfucking headache

What state? I don't live there, but I went to Florida for a bit just after Trump came around, and a bunch of my (conservative) relatives talked him up.
