I pointed this out on the Brianna Wu main thread, but I want to highlight it here too, and expand on it a little: she actually said, "Remember just how terrible the first 15 hours of the first Mass Effect were."

First of all, "the first 15 hours" is roughly half the fucking game. Mass Effect 1 ain't that long. If you're not doing a thorough playthrough, 15 hours is way more than half.

Second of all, and more importantly, this strikes me as exactly the sort of incredibly strained argument defenders of the Star Wars prequels occasionally make. "Hey, the original movies also had cheesy writing and wooden acting!" I'm entirely open to the idea that the criticism of Andromeda is overblown and that once I play the game myself I'll end up loving it. But the fact that a hardcore ME fanboy like Brianna Wu is already reaching for this painful argument makes me think that, yeah, it's as big a disaster as it's being made out to be.

I don't think so, you could say coincidence, but lets look at ME1, Male Shepard was based on Male model Mark Vanderloo.

Female Shepard at the time was not based on anyone, and used the standard character creator default.

By Mass Effect 3 Fem Shep has her own unique model. Concept art suggests she is based on Natalie Portman initially, with small adjustments made after the Female Shepard Facebook competition, where you could vote for your favorite version, which was a shitshow. And the model ended up looking near nothing like the concept art.

At the same time, look at the other female characters that are supposed to be based on their RL counterparts. The males always end up looking better, or at least more accurate to their RL basis.

That's a pretty good point but I don't really think the origional Ma's team is the workforce for andromeda it's also worth noting they're using a differant engine, personally I tend to consider it a EA team producing a ma spin off rather than a Bioware mass effect because I effectively consider bioware effectively subsumed into EA. It boils down to incompetance rather than malice, "yeah we made the Ryder fuck ugly because that's what people want" vs "the team fucked up Ryder because human faces are difficult and frostbite is a piece of shit.".
I'm not saying 'Bioware' doesnt have SJW problems Manveer Heir is a huge racist and his presence is an insult to anyone who believes in basic human decency. I just don't think that ryders face is some weird fetish for uggo's

Who knows maybe it's easier to do men with frostbite than women?

Regarding the graphics, I'd argue the graphics, or I should say the visual design, were part of what made ME1 and to a lesser extent ME2 such interesting games.

The first game had a grainy filter that gave it kind of a retro TV show kind of style. It meshed well with the art style, tone, and atmosphere of the game. This effect was subdued in 2, and unfortunately completely removed in 3. I'm not sure if AnDRAMAda is the same in that regard but it wouldn't surprise me.

Point is, the people who made the original game took great care in making sure the game looked good and was visually appealing, in addition to being well written and emotionally engaging. Whereas in this game, they couldn't be assed to make sure Shrek's Asari cousin was holding her gun in the correct position.

Nope. Again, here's more proof of what this engine is fucking capable of when not in the hands of weird smelling dangerhairs of Montreal...

Like I said it's possible but it just strikes me as more likely that they're incompetent. This is after the third time Bioware has totally fucked up in a spectacular way and that's ignoring DA inquisitons 'quirks'.
Thinking on it is might be possible that Bioware where trying to avoid doing sexy with women, the trouble is 'sexy' as opposed to handsome is a very obvious visual que for gender in women. Maybe they wanted to do a classically handsome person/athletic type but lack the actual practical skills required to actually pull off a lena hedley or a dame judy dench. Dr chakwas from the previous series looked a bit 'off' when I think on it.
It's really worth noting ryder doesnt just look homely. She looks like she's been out drinking for 3 days straight after a succesful face transplant and before patch looked like she had jaundice.

I think this is pretty much bad intentions and being totally incompetent all rolled into one game.

Y'kind of wonder why they didn't go down the Stardew Valley route and just... make everyone romancable.

Tiny ass indy game did that and nobody batted an eyelid because it didn't ram it down your fucking throat you could if you wanted to and that was that.

I'd guess because the last time they did that, you got the DA2 romances, which were all fucking terrible. Skyrim and Fallout 4 do the same thing, and it seemed to render the romances completely hollow (although Skyrim companions are so shallow no amount of romance questin' could make their personalities interesting).

This is legit my GotY so far. It is a trainwreck in ALL THE RIGHT WAYS. I'm having a good laugh every hour or so sprinkled by little chuckles here and there. The game is fucking hilarious. It is LITERALLY Mass Effect 1 if a team of anti-social retards were in charge of remaking it in a different setting.
There's also the occasional good moment that makes me sad for a moment when I remember that this game could have been Star Trek-lite in the ME universe with you going around and negotiating with other species and co-existing instead of ANCIENT EVIL, ANCIENT DEAD RACE, MYSTERIOUS EVIL all over again except done terribly.

I ought to pirate it for laughs or something.

I'm trying to find some article I read where Bioware was being interviewed for Dragon Age, and they said they purposefully modelled the characters "flawed" to make them more "relate-able" can't find it right now. Apparently this didn't really apply to the male characters though.
