Marvel Cancels Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Lives Matter Comic Due to Poor Sales
No one is buying Marvel’s lineup of social justice-themed comics. It’s no surprise, given that few readers want politics to be forced down their throats. Thus liberal darling Ta-Nehisi Coates and Yona Harvey’s Black Panther & The Crew is getting the axe after poor sales, just two issues after its launch. Its cancellation comes just weeks after a Marvel VP revealed that comics with forced messages of “diversity” were responsible for the publisher’s sales slump.

Joined by Luke Cage, Manifold, Misty Knight, and Storm, the titular superhero who entered the limelight with Captain America: Civil War gathers his all-black crew of superheroes to investigate the death of a civil rights activist who died in police custody. It has echoes of Sandra Bland’s death.

Set in a near-future Harlem-turned-police state patrolled by robotic police officers controlled by a private security contractor, the comic has every element you’d expect from a comic attempting to tell a story inspired by Black Lives Matter. The cops beat people up for no reason, too.

Naturally, the social justice superheroes take justice into their own hands and go to battle against the corrupt system, while learning about the historical figures of the Civil Rights Movement. Univision-owned entertainment vertical Gizmodo enthusiastically describes The Crew as one that “[tells a] timely [story] about real world issues, like how police brutality devastates black communities.”

Coates explained to The Verge that Marvel decided to kill the publication due to poor sales, and that there wouldn’t be any continuation after the current story arc ends in its sixth and final issue. The market spoke, and Marvel listened.

Christopher Priest’s original run of The Crew in 2003 performed similarly poorly, and was canceled after just seven issues. Like Coates’ new effort, Priest’s run was also made up of non-white superheroes who took on gentrification in New York City.

Gizmodo writer Charles Pulliam-Moore takes issue with Marvel’s business decision, to opine how the publisher was cancelling the only mainstream comic featuring a “majority-black” (a misnomer) cast of characters. Describing it as a “bad look” for Marvel, the writer says the publisher should have considered “more thoughtful approaches” instead of cancelling the underperforming title.

Pulliam-Moore argues that the comic book industry “needs to change in order to sustain itself and cultivate new readers,” and insists that stories like The Crew “deserve to be told,” but offers no solution for “culturally relevant” comics that just don’t sell.

Given Marvel’s failed forays into “culturally relevant” storytelling, it’s clear that any attempts to cultivate a new audience shouldn’t come at the cost of alienating existing readers.

If there is any market at all for Black Panther & The Crew, it certainly isn’t with the social justice warriors who cry when their stories are canceled but refuse to spend any money on them.

Markets be praised, no one in their right mind is buying this shit

I never will understand why they love these books so much but they don't buy them themselves. "Oh, they'll cancel it in half a year" is an obvious conclusion if no one is buying, they could've survived if all SJWs complaining would've actually put money forward.

It's the perfect microcosm of their degrees, utterly fucking useless, of no interest to anyone aside from themselves, and will never yield them a profit (gainful employment).

They're trying to cater to the BLM activists when those degenerates buy nothing but crack, booze and anything else what you'd think they buy. SJWs would buy hipster shit and anything real vain and they won't even read because 100% of them suffer from having piss poor reading comprehension.

What's funny is these people arguing that because you've bought comics before, you have to continue buying them because "privilege".

No bruh, no one is obligated to continue following an entertainment product if they don't like the direction it is going. Metallica fans dropped them after Death Magnetic. Weaboos like me dropped Bleach after Aizen croaked. You dumb shits dropped Game of Thrones when some feminist outlet declared it "problematic" over exactly the kind of shit you should've expected from Game of Thrones. And now Marvel fans are dropping Marvel comics because they keep pandering to people that, again, DON'T BUY COMIC BOOKS.

My god the autism in display here. :story:

I've seen people try to claim it IS a race issue if no one is complaining about the new Falcon who's an illegal immigrant from Mexico or that one year Bucky was the new Captain America as Steve ran SHIELD or DC having Jay, Barry, and Wally all use the Flash name. They were trying to connect the dots between all those characters having pale skin to racism. Not sure who they were trying to win over.

ah so they are finally figuring out that it is futile to cater to university students who are too useless to get a job and fund their shitty comics.

sjws just like to pitch a fit over any media that they are not a part of. they think changing comics to fit their lame agenda will bring more girls, blacks, or rainbowgenderpegleg folk. but all it does it piss off the sweaty nerds who actually blow money on this manchild shit.

on top of that, most of these faggots who claim to be marvel fans and screetch about LACK OF DIVURSITY are usually just fans of the marvel cinematic universe and collect piles of steve/bucky and thor/loki fanfics to sperg over.

Who the fuck would even read this? BLM arseholes won't read comics because they're 'problematic', old fans are too jaded with all the new shit being crammed down their throats that they're not going top buy new titles, and anyone attracted by the films just wants to read the avengers or deadpool or whatever they recognise from the movies.
I watched a panel at a con recently where an indie writer suggested that Marvel doesn't even care about sales anymore, just about putting out as many titles as possible to fill the shelves and push competitors out of the market. I don't coubt that the dude was just salty that they wouldn't pick up his dumb comic (it sucked syphilitic cock) but his theory would explain why there are so many new character and teams with their own series out at the minute. That being said there's still some goof out there- the Scarlet Witch series has really gorgeous artwork and is surprisingly well written given that she usually has all the personality of a plastic bag, but no one reads it.

I'm really beginning to wonder, do your typical SJWs even understand how people work?

I mean, do they get that when you're consuming entertainment, you want it to be, actually entertaining? And that entertaining does not mean "validating your life choices"?

I don't think they do, I honestly do not think they understand the simplest of motivations, because it doesn't fit the "narrative", it must not be real......

A lot of these people believe that entertainment and escapism are EEEEEEEVIL. How DARE you be entertained while black people are literally being murdered in the streets by the thousands every single day??? How DARE you engage in a little escapism while Trump is literally in the process of setting up concentration camps for Muslims and Latinos???

This sentiment has always been present in SJW groups, but it reached critical mass after Trump's election. Apparently, we're not allowed to enjoy anything until a Democrat is in the White House again. We need to be constantly reminded of how terrible everything is because we don't deserve a break from reality. That's why they keep pushing all these godawful comic books/tv shows/etc.

My favorite is the trannies crying Trump is going to kill them and then celebrating Oregon pushing to make non binary on their licenses which creates a neat and easily references database of all of them and their home address to be picked up and delivered to the camps from. There's no end to the lack of common sense of the cognitive dissonance.

I like that they made the cops into robots so that when critics bash the series for promoting cop killing they can say, "But see, they're not real cops! They're not even people! This is completely okay!"

Police = heartless racist robots (so it's OK to kill them).

If video games and Tarantino movies get blamed every time there is a school shooting, we should be allowed to blame the next crackhead who shoots up a cop on Marvel.

That's the ideological reason. The psychological reason is that being a SJW is miserable, and as miserable people they seek to drag others down to their own level. There's a reason that their opposite, the confident, fun-loving "bro", is such an insult in their circles. The bro is secretly envied because he can have a good time without having to feeling guilty about it or walk on eggshells all the time.
