The main red flag is they never identified this in the seven-year dev cycle for Marathon prior and not a single person identified this as a large issue (even though Overwatch was getting dogged for years to include a PVE mode that they eventually abandoned) before shipping a game like this.

It's not something you can just throw together in a season - it's something that needs to really be thought through because "the game as it exists and is failing, but shittier with bots instead" is going to actually kill the game.

On the contrary, I absolutely believe this was pointed out at some point and in classic Bungie fashion they completely ignored the obvious, convinced of their own infallibility, until it was way too late. Now they're staring down both barrels of Snoy threatening to close them up if they don't unfuck themselves and they're panicking and just throwing shit into Marathon to see what sticks.

For example, it's not gotten a lot of news but a 3rd game mode was also announced for Marathon with basically no details attached, touted as a "PvP-lite" mode, whatever the fuck that means. Bungie is absolutely going to throw together random shit every single season and abandon any and all original vision they had for Marathon in order to keep their asses out of Snoys sights for just another quarter. At least until Bungies current management can bail and leave this grenade in someone else's lap, as is Bungie tradition!

Phil Spencer tanked Xbox despite the Series X being physically superior to the base PS5 specs wise with backwards compatibility with the original Xbox and 360 because he was more concerned with rainbow flags, which nobody liked at all, and the modern audience than common sense business decisions for the decidedly "bro" console demographic

Now the Jeeta who replaced him has common sense to make the logo not some ugly flat design and take polls from the community to decide what to do, its weird when an actual brown woman DEI hire makes less pozzed business decisions than the white guy but I guess she isn't drinking the Kool Aid that Phil and all of Bunghole chugged

Bunghole and Xbox are both ideology driven and lack business sense so I guess it takes a business focused outsider who does not care about sociopolitics to understand and not be opposed to"give the white male gamers what they want and they will give us money"

With Season 2 dropping comes the wipe, and I think that's going to be Marathons make-or-break moment, more than anything else. You can already see people ITT and elsewhere on the net talking about how they pop in to Marathon, grind out a few matches, then quit. It makes me wonder if Marathons playerbase at large is really going to survive having all their progress they have ground out completely reset just to do the same old tasks for another season, just to be wiped at the end of that too. Marathon needs players, and the core PvPvE experience is not attractive to customers at large, so Bungle is going to introduce a PvE only mode come next season to try bringing in a new crop of players. Best case scenario is this brings in a bunch of new players and some of them try out the pvp occasionally. Worst case scenario (besides this not working at all) is it once again ends up like Destiny 2 where Bungie will now have two distinct communities, PvP and PvE, that barely overlap and are not interested in each others modes. Then they'll be stuck doubling their workload as they will need to design content that appeals to their PvE mode community and their PvP mode communities.

I didn’t think they could be more tone deaf. EVEN IF this was the name for S2 before the EOL announcement for D2; you have got to rename it as soon as the TWID came out. This might piss a lot of people off, because they’ll connect the same dots you did and it’ll look like Marathon devs are gravedancing. Un-fucking-real.

I think Bungie has absolutely no plan and are in panic mode. Reading some of the devs leaks since Destiny 2 got canned and Bungie managed to piss off not only their fans but their own employees; it looks like Bungo has been planning for months or perhaps a year to bet the entire house on Marathon. Unfortunately for them Marathon released to luke-warm sales at best, and now it's too fucking late to go back.

They left Destiny 2 to molder and bleed players since The Final Shape because they were convinced Marathon would save them from a decade of shit decisions, only it didn't and Destiny 2 is so dead it's probably gotten to the point where it likely costs more to produce content for D2 than what Bungie was making in sales. Bungie HAS to make Marathon more like Destiny now because they need even a fraction of Destiny's record setting player numbers to justify their continued existence to Sony.

If Sony had any sense of business or honor, they would demand Bungies entire C-suite commit Seppuku on livestream and use the super-chats to recoup some of their costs from that gigantic blunder of an acquisition.

Not gonna lie, but Destiny 2 trailers used to lure me in (even though I generally managed to resist the urge to play, since I know that most seasons suck). However this trailer looks shit, just random shit and I guess Zombie mode?

Personally I think that PvE content they talk about is a cut content from Destiny 2. Of course changed, but, for example, next DLC destination supposed to Old Chicago and it is somewhat easy to turn it into secret mission like they did with Whisper of the Worm (which I believe was planned as a raid) or Zero Hour. Chicago - the DLC in next planned DLC for Destiny - is known for its horrible monster and seeing them trying to create horror in trailer made me think about it, so we might see planned DLC content but refurbished for Marathon.

My guess is that selling macrotransactions in the 10 year old game is not easy since there is a limit to skins player can buy until he realizes that he had enough of them and he barely uses any of them. So idea is to make a new game where cattle would buy macrotransactions, basically sunset but for cosmetics. So they view Marathon as an untapped market to sell mtxs. It is retarded, but it is how suits think.

But they completely misjudged the interest of players for Marathon. Also cosmetics in Marathon are only for the player/squadmates - there is no social hub like the Tower to show off, there is no introduction of players in the PvP, there is no chill PvE missions etc. and with super fast TTK and ratty gameplay you would see enemy just for a fraction of the second. So there are even less reasons to but cosmetics in Marathon.

I'm still convinced Shwarma or whatever her name is only got parachuted into Xbox to decide what can be salvaged (i.e. profitable) and everything else is getting the chop.

Much like Marathon, I don't see what Microsoft could possibly do to turn Xbox's fortunes around after losing 2 console generations in a row, and I cannot believe they're seriously planning to release another one next gen.
