This is only just barely-tangentially related, but I've been playing a really fun (very raw early access) game called StarRupture lately (a Satisfactory-like factory builder, except about every hour or so of IRL time a massive fireball cooks the whole fucking planet you're working on, including you if you're not in shelter), and noticed a very peculiar behavior.

The UI, subtitles and audio are all set to English. My machine's locale is English. I'm in the US, and bought the game from the US flavor of the Steam store. One of the characters you can play as (they're all functionally identical and I didn't even bother looking when I launched the new world; just clicked-through, and it defaulted to the chick, because of course it did) announces "necessito aqua" in the most obnoxiously Spanish fucking accent imaginable when she gets thirsty (my main gripe with the game is the fucking survival mechanics; I hate that shit in a factory builder).

Thinking this was a bug (since all her other dialogue is in English, and so is literally everyone else's), I dutifully described the issue on their bug report thingy. To their credit, they were quick to respond, polite, and thanked me for reporting it while commending the attention to detail (specifically since I suggested maybe it was a mis-cued dialogue asset or something that'd gone wonky with their build pipeline), but then ... get this shit. They said it's intentional. They wanted every character to have their own unique, well, "character," and hers is apparently blathering to herself in Spanish even though everyone else around her speaks English and she does too.

This ties into the other annoying thing about the game -- the boring-ass and utterly-predictable "corporations bad, greed bad, military bad, prison bad" rhetoric spewed by the garbage backstory (which thankfully can be completely ignored as it has no (known) relevance to actual gameplay). You're playing as a prisoner "owned" by a corporation working off your debt to them in a dangerous environment in lieu of serving a lengthy prison sentence (this sounds remarkably like Shipbreakers now that I describe it). I'm sure you can imagine the "quality" of the dialogue.

Thank god the game itself is fun or I'd have refunded this shit. Dafuq makes these people like this?

Oh and if you build a regeneration chamber and walk up and activate it, you can just switch characters seamlessly (no resource or time cost, all inventory, attributes and unlocks transfer immediately, etc.). Pick the Engineer class. He still babbles occasionally but at least he's white and only speaks English.

Sony spent $3.6 billion to acquire Bungie after Microsoft and Activision concluded they were shitty to work with and couldn't control burn rates. If the company admits it was a terrible buy and dismantles Bungie, that's not Bungie's problem, anyone with RSUs got paid out in the acquisition. It's Sony's problem bc they just paid $3.6 billion (cash not Sony equity!) to have a bunch of idiot savants murder-suicide their live service game lineup.

Given the timing involved this is Bungie making a conscious decision to pull the plug on Destiny now in the hopes all of the players pile into season 2 in a few weeks, but that seems like another retard move as they are a year out from having quality pvp content. They are just going to have you hunt existing types of bots in the s2 pve mode and it's going to be lame unless they also let you explore cryo that way, so they're going to antagonize most d2 players by killing it off in favor of Marathon, then the ones that do try are going to bounce off of it completely bc it's not ready for them yet. They really ought to be doing something like offering d2 vets the game at 50% off as a peace gesture

If Marathon is taken off life support they will have to have Bungie come up with Destiny 3 or some sort of legally-distinct Halo "reimagining" bc those are the only things that could sell big enough to make the Bungie acquisition seem like a good idea.

I wouldn't be surprised if it all ends up being a ploy to bait Bungie dickriders into taking a poisoned hope-pill to reactivate their playerbase. They could announce that "after much consideration, we decided to resume support for Destiny franchise and commit to it long term for the sake of our fans, thank you all" (with the unsaid part being "hewhewhew now you're going to swallow all these macrotransactions like a good bitch"

That's not going to happen. This decision to EoL D2 was made weeks ago. Transfer and termination papers are drafted and signed, waiting to be issued. The update itself has probably gone through final approvals with the different platforms and is pending a client release.

If there's a small chance of anything happening, it will be at the end of June when we can see the fallout from all this(destiny/Marathon numbers, ect.). If all of the drama has any effect at all, we'll know early July. D2 won't ever be coming back, but we could see a D3 rapidly greenlit if things continue as they are.

I don't think the steady decline will continue. It will be stable until the June update, but that will be make or break for the game. If it's not received well then expect player numbers to dive off a cliff. If it's ok or just serviceable then I expect the player numbers to stay around 9-8k± for the foreseeable future.

I give it 50:50 odds. I really can't see them doing anything spectacular enough to bring old players back or new players into the game, (especially since I assume morale at Bungie is currently at an all time low,) but stranger things have happened.

With Season 2 dropping comes the wipe, and I think that's going to be Marathons make-or-break moment, more than anything else. You can already see people ITT and elsewhere on the net talking about how they pop in to Marathon, grind out a few matches, then quit. It makes me wonder if Marathons playerbase at large is really going to survive having all their progress they have ground out completely reset just to do the same old tasks for another season, just to be wiped at the end of that too. It's very reminiscent of Destiny 2s content treadmill which is precisely why I quit D2 years ago.

Worst case scenario (besides this not working at all) is it once again ends up like Destiny 2 where Bungie will now have two distinct communities, PvP and PvE, that barely overlap and are not interested in each others modes. Then they'll be stuck doubling their workload as they will need to design content that appeals to their PvE mode community and their PvP mode communities.
