Losing almost a billion dollars in company money should be enough to get you killed in most places, let alone shut down.
I don't think it would even be considered a sin to tie someone who lost that much of other people's money to a folding chair and start playing Funkytown while they watch you sharpen the implements.

So overall Bungie lost $969 million in value over the past fiscal year.
Is that a real number though, in accounting terms, or is it like when private companies go public on the stock market and decide they feel like their Jimco widgets are worth 5 billion dollars?
Should have stayed with Microsoft, holy fuck.
Funnily enough I watched Joon The King's Halo video after (M)arathoning his Quartering one, and it gave me the strong sense that even when they were good Bungie have always been incompetent fuck-ups who don't know how to scale a project.
I want more high quality RPGs, the genre that MADE the PlayStation.
At this point I'd be happy just to be able to play Alundra on PS1 Classics, I might need to blow the dust off my Vita soon. The modern Playstation library is fucking barren unless you're content to play Astro Bot over and over.

No it's funny money. As far as I understand it, that number is Sony saying Bungie isn't worth $3.6 billion anymore but rather $2.6-$2.7 billion if you count the losses over the past three quarters. That lost value can be because of their brand image tanking by releasing a game no one asked for, or because Destiny 2 is dying even though that's their only proven source of income, or any number of reasons. It looks like it's due to their actions, though, and not just Sony realizing only an idiot would value Bungie at $3.6 billion.

Pete Parsons is a fucking genius salesman. He fleeced Sony; the biggest gaming company in the world outside of Tencent, out of 3.6 billion. Insane.

I forget if it was Shadowkeep or during beyond Light where it was rumored Microsoft was interested in reacquiring Bungie but the moment Bungie floated 1 billion dollars as their valuation Microsoft laughed their way out of the room. I'll admit I'm a bit hazy on if this was in fact true or not and all the information I can find is just what someone heard that someone else heard so it's likely fake.
You're half right. It was right after forsaken and before Shadowkeep. Microsoft expressed interest in reacquiring Bungie and It was after a in-depth look at their financial situation that the Microsoft accountant went "lol no". The reason being that they had a "very high burn rate". Which means they burned through cash faster than they generated it via revenue. It's funny now because this earnings call proved that MS accountant right.

Nailed it. After losing people like Jaime Griesemer and Marcus Lehto, among other veteran leads, Bungie had to funnel money into a furnace to maintain the level of quality they had established. Hell, it all goes back to the end of the contract with Microsoft and the 343i split. Tons of key players jumped ship to establish 343i, exacerbating the poor leadership issue, and losing more of their long time experienced staff. Maybe it was their own hubris that did them in; thinking they could take a creative Juggernaut, divide it, and create more via mitosis, but in the end Bungie just reduced themselves to a quadruple amputee.

Just waiting on Phil Harrison to step out of the shadows and reveal it was him all along

Don Mattrick was someone who should have been yelled at all the time.
This is the last face the Playstation C-suite will see before he discharges 15 rounds into their crania

"You've made your last video game, kid. Sorry you got twisted up in this scene.
From where you're kneeling it must seem like an 18-carat run of bad luck.

But, truth is... the game was rigged from the start."

Not to derail the thread and not sure if you play Arc, but to give you an idea of the average PVEbabs' complaint: They say the new map, Riven Tides, has too much Arc presence on it.
The PVE focused players, say there is too much PVE content on the new map.
They are fucking stupid.
Most PvE players aren't playing the game for it's challenge.

Microsoft completely nosedived after Steve Ballmer left the company and his whole shtick was just yelling at people
"DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS!"

Was he secretly trying to tell us something about how game devs need to be tard wrangled?

You know what would have probably helped?

Making Marathon a single player shooter with deep narrative designs with grungy artistic design. Not some extraction shooter slop with graphic realism that utilizes stolen artwork.

Silly @BlackDragoons , dont you know that nowadays gamers just want the same old extraction multiplayer shooter over and over with corporate approved graphics and AI monitoring their mics so they are instantly banned the moment they say something even resembling a slur?

Doom 2016? What did that game had we didnt? Ours is so much better! All they do in Doom is shoot some ugly monsters that arent even controlled by other players while following some kind of "naaarrative" or something, ahaha #Criiiinge, am I right?

I’m legitimately curious just how much of that 1.2 Million was people who tried it and then asked for a refund.
It was at the end of March where a group of friends who I play video games with had one guy attempt to sell the game to the rest of us. Out of the five of us that got the pitch I was the only one to not even humor him to even try it, I'd tried D2 and bounced off it and had no desire to faff around with a game that looked even worse. Then out of the four he did manage to convince to buy it and play it two played for a week tops then stopped talking about it, one got a refund, and the last one attempted to get a refund but had spent too long figuring out he didn't like it to be able to get a refund.

I think it'd be generous to consider even half of the total sales number willing to come back unless major changes happened, and that's not going to happen with Bungie.

Listen kid, I'm not gonna bullshit you, all right? I don't give a good fuck what you know, or don't know, but I'm gonna torture you anyway, regardless. Not to get information. It's amusing, to me, to torture a Sony executive. You can say anything you want cause I've heard it all before. All you can do is pray for a quick death, which you ain't gonna get.

Despite this, Sony seems to be doubling down on Marathon.
I FUCKING HATE corpospeak and I hate it even more when prostitutes, er, I mean "journalists" regurgitate it. Everything out of this faggot's mouth is a fucking lie. A literal fucking lie. I am absolutely MATI but people like him deserve daily beatings until either a drop of truth falls out of their mouths (even if by pure accident) or they learn to stop talking/writing so the lies stop.

"This is not 'lost money' in the sense some are thinking of" ... [punch] It is "lost money" in the sense that it money they once had, that they now do not, and have nothing to show for it. Perhaps he means it's not "lost" in the sense that, although they no longer have it, they have some idea where it is even if they cannot just go take it back from the thief.

"This wouldn't be happening if Bungie games were doing great and printing loads of cash" ... [punch] No shit. It wouldn't be a "loss" if they were actually "gaining," you dumb fuck.

"The result of all this is not some imminent game/studio shutdown" ... [punch, just because you deserve it] ... immediately followed by "all this is to say there are no guarantees this doesn't produce something like layoffs." That is the slimiest, most weaselly way of expressing the fairly simple statement of "no layoffs or shutdowns have been announced, but are very common after announcements of such high-value number-went-down incidents."

In algebra one of the first things you're taught is to "reduce and simplify." For that last quote from him, the best way to do this would be to delete empty phrases and double-negatives. "There are no guarantees this doesn't produce" ... you can't quite say "there are guarantees this will produce," but you could just ... not say this at all because the phrase adds no value to the sentence. No shit there's no guarantees they won't lay people off. They're losing fucking money. Of course they're going to start lopping headcount, duplicitous faggot.

And "something like layoffs?" What's that supposed to mean? What kind of bullshit faggotry corpospeak bullshit cuckoldry anal seepage language is this? "Temporary involuntarily non-renewal of employment-like behavior?" "Momentary but indefinite suspension of the 'you work here' relationship?"

God I hate liars. I think I hate liars more than most any other kind of "bad person archetype" in existence. Genuinely "pure evil" people are less shitty to this plane of existence than every lying faggot who just lies to your face with a shit-eating grin.

It's almost as if the mob can actually run a tight fucking ship sometimes. Las Vegas is the best contemporary example of this IMHO. The mob should never have been chased out. The literal government is more crooked, corrupt and incompetent than the mob ever was. At least the mob kept the streets clean & safe and the casinos honest (lol -- figure that language out).

How does this differ from depreciation, which is something almost all companies use in accounting for movable fixed assets and nobody really cares about?

Would "impairment" be losses taken on investments, overpaying for a company during an acquisition, government fines, etc.?

Reason I ask is I've never seen that term used in a financial context.

Note: Not from US so I apologise if it's common terminology for you.
Nah, no worries. What you're witnessing here from these corporate stooges is word wanking of the highest order. Short version: "we overpaid for something to a fucking catastrophic degree, have lost enough of everyone's money to make a mob boss murderous, and are desperate not to be fired, fined or imprisoned for criminal fuckery of some kind (perhaps for which descriptive words haven't even been invented yet -- that's how hard we've just fucked up), so we're inventing euphemisms and linguistic fuckery to confuse, obfuscate and hide that fact from shareholders and other 'hammer-bringer-downer' types long enough to fucking escape with our lives."

Another day that ends with 'y' for Null on topics.

I will add. What if Marathon wasn't the concord? But Bungie itself was the concord for sony.
Listen, I love our nigger leader. I shit on him with love. But goddamn the nigga don’t research SHIET me boy, mufuggin’ bix nood.

Bungie is the studio that “advised” on concord so, maybe they’re the evolved version. Boncord? TrannyCock Studios?

I can’t think of a clever name.
