We got spoiled with concord and highguard flopping like they did and many people expected the same. Marathon is a more regular type of failure. Mediocre sales followed by a long and drawn out death as it circles the drain.
A game so mediocre not even its demise manages to stand out in any real way.

May I present to you QC, which had exactly ONE pulse of a heartbeat and then immediately flatlined. That was almost a DECADE ago, and they STILL refuse to pull the plug OR make changes that would actually draw players in (engine optimization, dedicated servers, removing ELO and matchmaking). The game on whose coattails QC desperately tried to ride, Overwatch, is also in a state of rapid decline and fading relevancy.

At least Overwatch made billions before the devs completely fucked it into the dirt and drove away the entire fanbase. You know you've fucked it when even releasing skins emphasizing the female character's bare feet doesn't bring the gooners back.

As for QC, it launched to so little fanfare that for years I assumed it had been cancelled.

The one thing that fascinated me about QC is that it someone had an E-Sports scene that somehow kept going for way longer than it needed to, and the last World Championship for the game was in 2023. But then again, that E-Sports scene was way more forced, compared to games like the Age of Empires series.

...yeah, I've been posting charts and it's been going worse than I expected. Not sure what your point is. :\
Why gunt guard it?
lol fluffers gonna fluff.

I do enjoy the modest effort he's putting into being a "realistic" shill, eagerly gargling Bungie's balls and mocking everyone's predictions of instant collapse not coming true instantly while occasionally complaining about [Standard Procedure Bungie Daily Game Balance Fuckup, build 14143] and lamenting how they're fucking it all up.

Y'know, trying to portray himself as a legit Blast Haver™ who is Totally Not a Paid Shill Because We Dipshits Do It for Free Now™ and is just a genuine fan faithfully defending the Really Winning Despite All Losing Apperances™ entertainment product he's latched onto today.

Remember, it didn't instantly crash and burn like Concord, so it's obviously a Complete and Total Success™!

I'd love to find and study the research that's been done over the past 50 years about how marketing goons turn seemingly normal human beings into this kind of snarky, ball-washing shill, presumably for free. I'd also like to shoot every marketing goon who contributed to that research or who puts it to work today (gonna need a lot of ammo). Feds, take note: I didn't say "kill" ... I said "shoot." I don't want them to die or anything. I want them to suffer. :story:

Nerf culture has nothing to do with "lefties". It is part of live service where you need to create an incentive to pursue new added things. The most complained thing for both "left-" and "right-wing" players is when freshly added things are boring. If Whisper of the Worm is best DPS gun (like it was first year of Destiny 2) and keeps being best DPS gun why even bother with grinding new stuff?

In addition to that making balance patch could be a good content itself if it is shakes up things in good way so you can get a nice update without adding anything new.

this sort of rubs into the problem with an RPG-esque online game that's a shooter, there's only so many ways to make a gun that's actually usable/good, its not like swords and magic and shit, where the moveset can be varied, the ranges of the swings, ect.. with a gun it shoots, faster or slower, bigger or smaller damage, with ranges, you can only go so far and the longer the game goes on, the more true it is.

I think the competitive AAA multiplayer shooter is a dying relic of a bygone past.

Millennial oldtroons loved these games but I honestly don't think zoomers have the attention span for this sort of thing, they're all playing gacha and mobile games.
Two issues which have gained more prominence in recent years (when compared to the aughts and early 2010’s) is the increase in cheaters and the internet enabling rapid development of refinement culture for these games. It’s why even if you brought back the good games from the past to today the play experience would be substantially worse in the present.

All they need to do is is find the right e-celeb to purchase a good review from, and Marathon will become a generation-defining cultural juggernaut.
I remember a funny clip of a streamer’s other streamer friends immediately wanting to return to Arc Raiders after the ad time was over and the main guy having to say, “c’mon guys we need to give the new game a chance!” to protect their future ad deals. I think it was peanut. Regardless, if even notorious sloppa enjoyers (most are COD Warzone players and shit) find your game a chore to play, and have not touched it since you paid them to, I think it’s a sign your game sucks balls.

Aztecross, as I’ve referenced in this thread previously, is the most annoying one. He jokes that he doesn’t get preferential treatment from Bungie (he does), he acts holier than thou whenever someone in his chat shits on D2 or Marathon (retarded).

He was absolutely paid by Bungie to play marathon for a bit, and he even keeps up the shtick that he “likes it”, but he hasn’t touched the fucking thing in a month. Shit, he was playing The Division 2 earlier this week instead of this DOA piece of shit. He’s a shill, through and through.

Anyone that played it on stream is, and I’d bet my fucking life on it.

D2 has more players than marathon right now :story:

I think I recall Aztecross claiming that Marathon would have 100k concurrent players for at least a month after its release. This was already funny when he said it considering even then the game's success was doubtful, but it's even funnier in hindsight when you see how low the player count is now.

Edit: Found the clip. He actually said it would be 100k players for six months lol. But he does it with this 'I'm sort of joking, but sort of not' attitude so who knows how serious he was. He's been a big ball-washer for Marathon so it wouldn't really surprise me.

Idk. Cross has actually been shitting on Marathon and D2 pretty hard lately, and actually went back to D1 a week or two ago. To the point where it wouldn't surprise me if Bungie, being the spiteful and shortsighted shitheads they are, cut him off entirely.

That final prediction clip is pretty embarrassing though (assuming he wasn't joking).

I saw that, inspired me to do the same (game holds up so well by the way, fucking great game that D1), but I can only assume he did that because he has been the one spearheading this “Destiny Remastered” copium the last few weeks.

I kind of doubt they'll cut him off. He's made videos on D2 being in a rough spot for awhile at this point and it hasn't really changed anything with their relationship as far as I know, he still gets a lot of early access to most of their new releases. I think probably because he's big enough that the backlash would only make Bungie's PR worse, but also because if they need him to he'll gas up anything Bungie puts out at least up to the release.

From what I recall he did the same with Marathon. He hyped up the game and shilled for it all the way up to and even some time after the release. It's only after some time passed and it was undeniable that Marathon was in rough shape that he started criticizing it. Maybe you're more familiar with his content than me, but all I remember from him during the run up to Marathon is him gunt gaurding the game like in the clip.

He was also gunt guarding Highguard pretty hard too. His 'review' made it clear Cross has no idea what he's talking about 99% of the time. There was also Arc Raiders. When it first came out, he said he was going to play it all throughout November. Guess what he did? Ditched it for Destiny 2 because he wanted a shitty helmet. The whole Call to Arms event was a shit show in of itself as it made it abundantly clear that a vast majority needs Bungie to hold their hands and give them hand outs in order for them to even fathom touching an activity.

It’s so sad. The grind is part of these games. Like, the cabal brothers strike in Destiny 1? That has the dope ass titan arms? It took me like 100 collective hours to get it to drop. “WAAAAH WHAT A GRIND SO BORING!” Well, no, because the strike is engaging, the gameplay is good, gunplay is fun. Like, the grind is there to incentivize playing the content over and over because the content and gameplay is good. THATS what’s been removed from current D2. The jeets and trannies that run D2 now just heard people bitching about “grinding” and removed the grind instead of making the content itself enjoyable, or adding in new gameplay mechanics. We haven’t had a new primary weapon archetype since D2 launch and that was submachine guns. Incompetent retards.

The servers might stay up for years but content-wise there's no point throwing good money after bad.
They have custom servers instead of AWS money sucking ones so I am inclined to agree.

, they give zero shits about the game being a failure.
AAA essentially makes you into a little replaceable cog. I don't know how anyone truly can be excited about it outside of maybe their paycheck / job being effected.
They don't make fun games they make products to milk money from consumers that are investor approved.
