Our global population continues to rise, hitting 8 billion in November 2022. However, the increase has been very uneven across the globe, with some countries showing explosive population growth while others have seen significant declines.
"Most countries with high rates of population growth...share a combination of young population structure (that also means many women are in their reproductive ages) and high fertility rates (i.e., high number of children per woman)," Tomas Sobotka, a senior researcher at the Wittgenstein Center for Demography and Global Human Capital and deputy director of the Vienna Institute of Demography, told Newsweek.
"Although fertility rates have been declining everywhere, countries with young population structure will continue experiencing high population growth in many decades to come," he said.
A country's overall growth rate is calculated by its birthrate compared to deaths, as well as its net immigration, and can be positive or negative.
As part of the United States government's World Factbook, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) publishes up-to-date figures on population growth rates for 236 countries and territories around the world, which can be visualized in the map below.

The top 10 countries in the CIA's list for population growth are as follows:

  1. South Sudan—4.65 percent growth rate
  2. Niger—3.66 percent
  3. Angola—3.33 percent
  4. Benin—3.29 percent
  5. Equatorial Guinea—3.23 percent
  6. Uganda—3.18 percent
  7. Democratic Republic of the Congo—3.11 percent
  8. Chad—3.01 percent
  9. Mali—2.9 percent
  10. Zambia—2.83 percent
The United States, by comparison, is number 131 on the list, with a population growth rate of 0.67 percent.

Sobotka pointed out that several of the top 10 countries are in or near zones of conflict.
"In the CIA table, South Sudan shows the highest population growth because it is estimated to get some of the migrants fleeing Sudan during the ongoing hostilities/civil war there," he said.
Some of the table's results are counterintuitive, such as the fact that war-torn Ukraine is positioned as the fastest-growing country outside of Africa.
"Ukraine is expected to have its population growing despite the conflict because some of the refugees are coming back (and leave the countries where they stayed—that's why, for instance, Poland is projected to shrink by 1 percent)," Sobotka said.
However, he added that the war has also accelerated prewar trends of low fertility and out-migration in the country. "The situation is quite unprecedented," he said.
Going forward, another looming variable promises to shake up the structure of the global population.
"Over time, climate change will also increasingly contribute to both more conflict and more migration," Sobotka said. "But these movements are super difficult to predict."
While our growing population is a clear indicator of the success of public health measures around the world, it also poses a challenge to sustainability and social and economic growth, the extent of which varies on a number of factors, including the country's political and economic conditions, population density and economic growth.
"Overall, high rates of population growth are often challenging because they increase the pressure on available resources (especially water, land availability, food production and energy) and make it more difficult for the governments to improve infrastructure, improve health care, build better cities, build more schools, expand education system and protect available resources," Sobotka said.
"However, these challenges can be partly overcome by sound policymaking in countries that have competent governments. Eventually, better education, improved access to health and contraception, urbanization and economic growth will reduce fertility rates, and this will subsequently lead to lower population growth."

I’ve become so cynical that I read the word “map” in the title and thought a pedophile was about to explain population growth to us.

Honestly surprised China is still on the "pinkish" side.

Does it account for child mortality? If not then it's leaving a big factor out, especially for Africa

Yes, Africans are shitting out babies, but few of those actually make it to adulthood. So while it's immediately "growth" it's kind of misleading

Third world shit hole dwellers pump out kids as often as they breathe out air? Shocking. Shame most of them will die from starvation because their parents are brainless savages who are too stupid to use a condom.

Priority targets for mass sterilization followed by mandatory contraception and incentives for abortion.

Stop pretending and clutching your pearls about ethics or human life having inherent value. You know I'm right and it is incredibly freeing to say their lives simply don't matter. Rest assured the feeling from the other side is mutual.

Honesty with oneself and your values is critical to clear, reasoned thinking.

I was informed by "reliable sources" that we are not supposed to have children, in order to prevent anuddah Climate-Shoah.
Well, if that is true, the course of action is clear: Save the climate, nuke Africa.

I’m convinced that if we didn’t keep sending so much aid to Africa, they would die off extremely quickly. They’re not building sustainable economies over there.

I actually believe some of them could develop actual economies, but they definitely can’t when we are dumping billions of dollars of grain and whatever on them constantly, putting all their farmers out of business and atrophying their skills. So instead they sit around and fuck and have babies because there is literally nothing else to do.

Oh and also wars.

Africa doesn't fucking need us and they never did. It's the closest thing to Paradise on Earth. Everything is edible, the climate is always nice. They never developed agriculture because they never fucking needed it.

They don't need us and we don't need them and the day both of us realize this is the day things will improve for everyone.

Hell, I would rather move all the niggers to the US and move the civilized people to Africa.

Dude christian missionaries do absolutely nothing but hurt the people they claim to "help" it's not like people in poorer nations went tens of thousands of years without figuring out how to make god damned clothing and shoes and yet they constantly lie about them being needed so they flood the streets with free shit donated by idiots and destroy the local economies while they're at it. It's so infuriating.

Seriously though fuck those cultists all they're doing is trying to force the poor and uneducated to rely on their handouts so they can manipulate and brainwash them into joining their cult. They're pure evil.

The food is what keeps them alive. Their farmers are mostly NOT growing food, but growing cotton and shit. But they can't do anything with this cotton, because they just export it to Bangladesh to turn into the same clothes which get dumped on them. They can't actually produce a finished product because of this shitty economic logic, therefore their countries are famine-prone hellholes. If Africans grew their own food, their population growth would be a lot more natural. It's like in Civilization 5 when you redirect your trade routes to pumping food into a city. It's enormous and totally artificial growth which is unsustainable the minute the tap is cut off.

Also, don't forget refugees! One of the big economic factors is Africans (and third worlders in general) taking money out of your country and sending it back to their shithole. This is one of the major economic drivers of Africa. Even "decent" African economies like Nigeria still have over 5% of their GDP as these remittances from home, and in most countries it's 15-20%. During really shitty periods, it can be 40-50% in some parts of Africa. It's the literal welfare continent.

No, Africa is a hell on Earth. It's hot and humid, the animals are hard to hunt because they evolved alongside humans and are afraid of anything that looks ape-like (be it a chimp, a nigger, or a cracker), and full of a fuckton of diseases because yep, they evolved alongside humans.

Africans have been farming for thousands of years. They had to learn that, because the continent was so dangerous that a stable food supply was good. Most of the plants they grew weren't very good (Africa is full of poisonous plants) so today they grow other shit.

And their birthrates are starting to plummet as well, regardless of their industrial development. Abject hellholes like Sierra Leone are experiencing the same free fall in fertility as the more developed nations of Botswana and Rwanda. Call me crazy, but I speculate that within 10-20 years, Africa will have such a bad demographic collapse that large swaths of the continent will be entirely devoid of human life. The infertility rate will be so bad that it'll make East Asia and the West look like an Amish village.

That map doesn't look right. Ukraine with Crimea AND positive population growth? I call bullshit.

this is why it's kind of dumb to put migration and birthrates together imo

Because large swaths of the continent are barely habitable (without development/human intervention), especially given climate change only making it drier
Africa is far behind on the "moving out of mud villages and into cities" phase of society compared to the rest of the world, which is why many of those places are either going to die out famine-style or Japan-style. Realistically comparing it to the mid east and Australia populations shouldve already concentrated in actually habitable areas compared to where they are right now

Aren't there a good chunk of countries in Africa where most of the population consists of just adolescents and young adults because a lot of them barely make it to their 20s? It's been a while since I've heard such info so what I'm saying is probably outdated.

What is it about living in a shithole with AIDS, a six-way civil war, famine, dysentery, and rampant corruption that makes people say "I know, let's pop out 15 kids!"? Meanwhile, people here with everything going for them say "I just couldn't bring a child into this world.".
Getting pragnent is more entertaining than drawing dicks in the mud for the millionth time, I guess.
