Man sets himself on fire near White House
Article by Kevin Breuninger

An unidentified man set himself on fire early Wednesday afternoon in front of sightseers on the Ellipse park in downtown Washington, D.C., not far from the White House, authorities said.

A spokesman for the Washington Fire Department told CNBC that, “I can confirm that we’ve transported one patient with burns from the Ellipse and we’re now on the scene assisting law enforcement,” referring to Park Police and U.S. Secret Service officers.

The Ellipse is a 52-acre park area that lies south of the White House, and north of the National Mall, in the heart of Washington. The fire occurred just north of the Washington Monument.

Secret Service spokesman Jeffrey Adams said in a statement that the agency’s Uniformed Division Officers “responded in seconds” after the “male individual lit himself on fire.” Officers then began administering first aid to the man.

“The individual is being transported to a local hospital,” Adams added.

A spokesman for the Washington Fire Department told CNBC that, “I can confirm that we’ve transported one patient with burns from the Ellipse and we’re now on the scene assisting law enforcement,” referring to Park Police and U.S. Secret Service officers.

Officials had no information on the man’s condition.

Alina Berzins, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate from Lorton, Virginia, told CNBC that she was visiting the National Mall with two of her cousins from Bolivia when “we saw this man” on the Ellipse and “he starts running, and then we saw him covered in flames.”

“He started to walk” and then “cops started coming to the area and he collapsed,” Berzins said. The fire then was extinguished, she said.

Berzins said that she and the other passerby in the area were stunned by the sight of the man.

“Everybody was in shock,” Berzins said. “I was in shock.”

Berzins’s father posted on Twitter a video that his daughter took of the incident.

She said that several dozen law-enforcement officers flooded the scene, and were joined by a helicopter overhead and multiple Fire Department vehicles.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said he could not immediately comment.

Maryland man who set himself on fire near White House dies from injuries, police say
By Travis Fedschun

A Maryland man who set himself ablaze at a park outside the White House on Wednesday died of his injuries, authorities announced Thursday morning.

The U.S. Park Police said in a news release the incident happened at 12:25 p.m. on The Ellipse, near 15th Street and Constitution Avenue south of the White House. Officials have not yet publicly identified a possible motive for the self-immolation, which was captured in a series of shocking pics and videos from the scene.

"The individual was extinguished and later transported to a local hospital for treatment," the agency tweeted.

The man, identified as Arnav Gupta from Bethesda, Md., was admitted with "life-threatening injuries" and died later Wednesday night, according to police.

Gupta, 33, had been reported missing earlier in the day by Montgomery County Police.

Montgomery County officials said in a news release that family members reported they had last seen him around 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday and were "concerned for Gupta’s physical and emotional welfare."

The incident on Wednesday prompted a large emergency response as authorities rushed into the park to douse the flames.

A man who said his daughter witnessed the incident said the person had been running through the park before setting himself ablaze.

Krisjan Berzins also posted a video, which showed Gupta engulfed in flames.

"Unbelievable," he wrote.

A similar incident happened last month when another man set himself ablaze while positioned along the White House’s North Fence Line.

The suspect was “operating an electric wheelchair-type scooter” when officials say he set his outer jacket on fire, the Secret Service said at the time.

I laughed so hard when the school bus pulled into view. It's just too funny. I wonder if this guy was actually protesting Trump, or it's just a coincidence.

Has there been a motive released yet? I struggle to believe it was political protest, but people have been stupid enough to surprise me in the past.

Who wore it better?

Everyone who's tried to imitate Thích Quảng Đức that I've heard of seems to have failed miserably. Getting extinguished and slowly dying of massive burns is not a fun way to die.
