So what are the odds we'll see those real cards in a secret lair?
Very low, they were a confused mishmash of yugi-oh and early magic. No mana costs or printed power/toughness (they did have Yugi-Oh attack power at least). Life totals were Yugi-Oh and the anime's holograms on the Yugi-oh grid. The Uncle Panty played transformed off of no text at all on either the original card or apparently the Dildotus (I didn't read it all, not sure it was all legible anyway) and everyone was surprised it even could transform which felt very early Yugi-Oh anime. Also I had problems with Panty casting Dildotus at instant speed but the legible part of the card included "Can be cast as an interrupt" so it's legal I guess

It was mostly Yugi-Oh but I could tell that there was at least one old school MtG guy involved because of Blue Eyes White Uncle's typeline of "Summon Elder Uncle Legend"

We are several Ships of Theseus away from that guy. Despite being a cunt he oversaw one of the most prolific and vibrant periods of Magic's art (ODY-TSP).
Oh, that card refers to an actual director? I just meant a control-freak in the seat, which explains why everything has become so formulaic and repetitive, with multiple artists clearly just copying some ur-concept-artist's design point for point.

Yeah, it was an in-joke from a time when WotC could actually laugh at itself. Jeremy Cranford became infamous for an incident where he un-hired Rebecca Guay for a bit (see Persecute Artist from the same set) because he felt her style was too feminine, it didn't fit the tone of a barbarian gladiator on a quest for power in a world of sleazy necromancers and tribal warfare. I do see his point, but it was a minor controversy 20+ years ago, and Guay returned either way.

It feels like this kind of creative clash would never happen now because the production is just an assembly line of random underpaid artstation hires, featuring a few actual eye-grabbers by Dominick Mayer for the chase rares.

Hasbro has posted their Q2 2025 Financial Report.

And once again, MTG has to do all of the carrying while the rest of Hasbro's IPs are corpsing:

I find the permanent spoiler season thing they're doing now really tiresome.
It is almost impressive how much the game isn't made for the core playerbase. I know its gonna be so ass for competitive because all it takes is one broken card, and I believe spiderman is releasing right before some modern tournaments.

I imagine it is nice for MTGA players since there's not much of a wait and metas can get stale way faster since you can play any day. But it is too much product for paper.
This is why I wish animals were just "beasts" instead of this bullshit.
bro but the quirky animals, don't you want cute dogs and squirrels in ur game? don't u love all the comedy that's been the same dogshit for years? Can't believe MaRo could have restraint in the past with all the crap we get now.

Obviously I'm not a fan of crossover sets, but the names for this Spider-Man set seem extra stupid. Also seems like the set is going to railroad you pretty hard into either heroes or villains, which I'm not sure will be great for draft. Also, the tone probably fits spider man, but it feels overly goofy to me (though I guess that fits modern magic).

Anybody else really bothered by "hero" and "villain" being a creature type now?

Like, is there going to be a grand creature type update with those? We going to get hero Gideon or villain Nicol Bolas now?

Can't wait to play a Commander pod of Spider Ham vs. Gandalf the White vs. Marneus Calgar vs. some random in-universe legend whose only salient characteristic in the lore is that xe is queer.
That was Niko.

"To entice women to play".

Setting aside whether this is a desirable thing or not, in my experience the easiest way to entice a woman to play is to entice her husband / boyfriend / brother / son / dad to play, at which point she'll learn because she wants to spend some quality time with him and MtG is the way to do that. Women engage in hobbies for fundamentally different reasons than men do.
