I don't think Wizards will ever get rid of the Reserved List. The apparent success of Secret Lairs and the alternate IP crossover cards shows that they really don't need to reprint Reserved List staples when they can re-re-re-rerelease in demand Modern staples with a special art treatment plastered on top and make bank doing it. There's no need to risk a lawsuit from collectors for breaking their promise with the RL when you can just, I don't know, do an alternate art Ragavan as classic Han Solo or something and have infinite consoomers stampeding to your door to buy one.
In fact, I think the release of serialized cards kind of shows that they're moving in the opposite direction: they realize the power of the secondary market and big collector whales from the frenzy surrounding Pokemon (among other games) and are now pandering directly to that group with artificially scarce cards. Sure, their first foray into that was Viscera Seer, a cheap common, but there's only 100 of the special reverse treatment printed and there's probably at least an order of magnitude more Alpha Black Lotuses still floating around (just think about how much the #69 out of 100 Seer is going to be worth on auction in five or ten years).
I would not be surprised at all if Wizards decides that the best way to drive player growth is to do what Lego did and make most of your product line just your toy version of someone else's IP, with the occasional Modern Horizons-style set to up the game's power level and obsolesce old cards in the non-rotating formats, or the occasional big Commander set.
Oh I agree that Maro is just going to completely sell out the brand and make "Magic the Gathering" into an IP horse, but honestly I don't mind. I kind of hated it when I first saw the Walking Dead stuff..but then I thought about War of the Spark and Liliana getting no justice for what she did, and that made me think of the ((BRANDING)) tm in general.
Its all garbage, there is nothing unique to Magic aside from the planeswalkers themselves anymore.
We have unironically not visited a new plane that isn't just "X but MAGIC THE GATHERING" since we went to the first Zendikar.
Innistrad is just Horror Movie Tropes
Theros is not Greece
Tarkir is not China
Kaladesh is not India
Ixalan is not South America
Amonkhet is Not Egypt
Eldraine is just Story Book Tropes
Ikoria is just a Godzilla movie
The Pro-Scene is dead because Maro constantly fucked with how it worked every other year for the past decade, Arena ignores Vintage, Modern and Legacy to jerk off over hearthstone shit.
Pioneer was actively allowed to die because WOTC left the Inverter combo shit fester forever.
Standard is in a shit place because the new block format added 50% more cards to the format so the power level is impossible to actually constrain.
Fuck it, the Brand is dead..IP whore it up. Give me my One Piece universes beyond so I can make a Kaido deck and bully the shit out of every faggot harry potter deck I can find.
PS : The Reserve list excuse is bullshit, reprints only crash the value of a card if it is something that is utterly unplayed. If you make Vintage and Legacy playable in paper I bet the original printings go up in value.
