I'm not saying kids shouldn't be punished. I'm saying if you're a parent you should be the only person who can do that. For minor infractions, at least.
I never experienced detention or knew of anyone who did. The worst I ever got was an in-house suspension in middle-school during school hours for a week for chronic running in the halls. I had like 5 worksheets done in the first hour and then drew a comic series of 15 pages throughout the week of a race of cooked turkeys with flaming human skulls being tormented in various ways by an uncaring world of hazards. I look back on this time and work fondly. My parents somehow never found out so I never got grounded.

That whole bit was so disconnected from reality I had to clip each part out and stitch it together since show writers don't tell a story in an episode but A, B, C, and D plots in two to five minute vignettes which eventually comprise an entire 15 minute story line. Here is the whole six minute bit that was told over seven different parts throughout the episode (Evil season 01 episode 07). Only context needed is that the guy in the suit is a demon who tempts people into evil.

That's time not focused on teaching to do inane clerical tasks, exactly the kind of thing technology excels at mitigating, so the effort is spent instead later when the teacher can look at the database and see wow every 3 periods they take a 20 minute bathroom break, or their breaks always line up with lafwandas breaks for 10 minutes, etc... annoying invasive system, but low trust/diversity demands them.
Detention is always the lighter punishment, the refusal will mean they just go to suspension, which means no free child care on that day, but no being detained.
