The name pertains to a specific group, but there are many adjacent communities...groups of teenagers and young adults -although police investigations often reveal middle-aged ringleaders- who originally came together over dark humor, but became so obsessed with shocking, violent, and pornographic content that they start creating it themselves. The type of kid who enjoys being a prankster online is often drawn to these groups, where they may end up extorting nudes from their peers on the same videogame platforms they'd normally use, or worse.
