This is wrong. The checkmark gets reviewed when you first sign up or when you edit your name or URL or avatar or some shit like that. The review process takes 24-72 hours. It has nothing to do with payment information.

The same shit happened when Sam Hyde dropped his Elon documentary/long ass video and he changed his name and people assumed Elon unverified him. If you change your name or avatar you lose verification until you get reverified.

I believe the verification process just makes sure you aren't calling yourself Bill Gates or something like that.
