Josh you might find this mildly interesting...Google released a new tool that generates shitty NPR-style podcasts about any topic you feed it, whether that's web pages, forum threads, pdfs etc. It's kind of fun to play with.


I guess we shouldn't be surprised by AI's capabilities at this point, but it's still wild to me to hear AIs earnestly discussing Rekieta's downfall at length.

In what I'm pretty sure is a world's first, formerly Blackwater's founder and CEO Erik Prince has released a massively publicized donation page called Ya Casi Venezuela (Almost There Venezuela) which is seeking to crowdfund an armed mercenary intervention in the South American communist totalitarian shithole which houses the largest proven oil reserves in the world. (Fun Fact! Erik Prince founded the Frontier Resources Group company after selling Blackwater with the goal of developing high risk natural resource deposits in third-world civil war ridden shitholes)

That's fine but I also don't get people who use cheap record players. Like just objectively even youtube compressed audio is better if your equipment is that crap.

Personally I have an old Pioneer stereo from the late 70's and a matching turntable. Are they better than CD? No, really it's about the vibe I think. Also it appeals to my inner "only use formats that will last forever" desire since just facing the ravages of time vinyl is more durable than a cd by virtue of being a solid lump of plastic.

Laser turntables have actually been tried, issue is actually that they pick up too much info. When the needle is being dragged through the groove it's also moving dust out of the way but that doesn't happen with a laser.

Also for the thread, this isn't a big thing yet but the video game trial of the century has started where Billy Mitchell, who undeniably faked scores in fucking Donkey Kong, and Karl Jobst, who Null bullied into editing his Goldeneye video, have met in Australian court.

Trial is ongoing, Billy Mitchell claims that Jobst defamed him by saying that him suing another person caused them to kill themselves. Also claims that he literally lost 25lbs from Jobst releasing videos about him stressing him out and missed out on $50K from a canceled gaming convention.

Jobst is pretty confident he'll win but he was proven wrong earlier this year when Twin Galaxies, a group of boomers that keeps track of video game high scores poorly, and Billy settled their lawsuit out of court. I'm not sure how Australian civil courts are with defamation, if it's like the UK where it's really easy to prove on account of journalists there being even worse than American ones.

Again it’s like coffee or pipe smoking. Vinyl is about the sound, sure, but you can replicate that sound perfectly pops and all (though no play of an old record sounds exactly the same each time; it might skip in the same place but never exactly the same way - my favorite song as a wee lad had an entire verse I never knew about until I got the song on cassette!).

The thing about vinyl is ritual. You have to open the player, unlock the head, place the record down, position the head, and hit the go button. These are all ritualistic steps that greatly enhance what you’re doing in a way that hitting play on a phone will never meet.

Even waking up to the record needle bouncing off the end repeatedly is a sound and experience you can’t really replicate in any other way.
