Wasn't Tate a kickboxer before he got into his pimping nonsense? Kinda have to be in that sort of shape to compete in combat sports, and at top level everyone's on some kind of gear. I'd imagine he just didn't feel like stopping his cycles as he got older for personal image reasons as well as being able to project what appears to be masculinity to his audience as opposed to him trying to attract men for hook ups or whatever.
ETA on the Valve legal stuff: The "use it or lose it" principle isn't just unwritten, it's a codified (though nebulous still) thing referred to as
abandonment. Ironically, the intent with the introduction of this principle was to weaken copyrights by making it not feasible for large companies to buy up a bunch of copyright and then sit on it and do nothing but stifle the industry, yet it had the opposite effect of making everyone way more protective of their IP because now there exists the possibility to lose it if you're not. Furthermore, the portal demake may have been them wanting to get ahead of Nintendo, who is notoriously litigious due to that time they almost suffered
trademark genericide back when parents called every video game console "a nintendo." They've got far too much at stake to lose, and they've had a past brush with death, so Nintendo really doesn't like to fuck around.
Also worth noting, this isn't the first time this has happened.
TF2 Classic and
Open Fortress were forced to not share their downloads by Valve a couple years ago, but they worked things out in private and are back up and running. (Also, while I haven't played TF2 Classic, I can recommend Open Fortress as a good time if you like arena shooters. Just not always that populated.)
