crime rates across all metrics skyrocketed in the late 60's and had been a steadily rising problem throughout the 70s and 80s. it's not until that reached a fever pitch in the late 80's/start of 90's that tough-on-crime politicians (on both sides) rose to prominence and through them (as well as a number of other societal factors) violent and abuse-related crime rates began to drop. Likewise, reporting, surveillance, and documentation for abuse against children has increased infinitely, as well as social awareness and taking the issue seriously, hence why the communities where it remains most prevalent (native and black) are those with the lowest outward transparency and access to help.
the drop in crime rates is a general trend but it is also worth pointing out that sexual abuse against minors has not fallen at anywhere near the same rate as other crimes- which have dropped anywhere from 60 to 80 percent- while the best estimates for child sexual abuse are about a 40% drop. And, unlike a murder, mugging, and to lesser extent rape, the reporting mechanisms are still dogshit and best estimates think more than half of sexual crimes go unreported to ANY authority, let alone proper police/CPS handling.
