It occured to me while sneedposting in chat that I have never watched a single episode of the simpsons. I am considering doing gumroad where I just watch the most recent episode from season 48 or whatever the fuck and then maybe also one from the very early seasons. like look up whatever the highest rated episode is and watch that, or do a fan favorite.
Simpsons like South Park peaks at about 9 seasons.

"Sneed's Feed & Seed" was the last funny Simpsons joke ever. That was in Season 11, but tbh I keep forgetting it's Season 11 because it's good enough to be from one of the first 9 seasons.

But yeah, after Season 10 The Simpsons started to suck-diddly-uck for the most part.

So Josh, for your dead internet theory here...

The two fake doctors, whose accounts urged extreme caution about Covid-19, were part of a network of at least four fake accounts that touted their ties to the LGBTQ+ community, vocally advocated for mask-wearing and social distancing, and dished out criticism to those they felt were not taking the pandemic seriously.

The Honeymans could not be reached for comment, as they do not exist. At publication time, Robert Honeyman’s account was no longer active.

The fake doctors were uncovered by Joshua Gutterman Tranen, a self-described “gay writer” pursuing a master’s of fine arts at Bennington College. He saw Robert Honeyman’s tweet about their husband being in a coma, noticed people he followed also followed them, and thought that they might be part of the LGBTQ+ academic community.

But after 10 minutes of googling, Gutterman Tranen concluded that Robert Honeyman’s photo was a stock image and their biography stretched boundaries of believability: an academic who left no traces on academic websites and had lost two family members to Covid in late 2022, despite masking and distancing.

The character looked like “liberal mad libs,” Gutterman Tranen said.

A lot of the highest rated episodes are only really effective if you’ve watched the show. Things like “Homer’s Enemy” and “Who Shot Mr. Burns” rely a little on a developed knowledge of the structure and characters to be really funny. They play with the show in ways that are more enjoyable if you’re familiar with the status quo. Top rated episodes I would recommend from early on would be “Marge vs the Monorail” or “Last Exit to Springfield”, they’re both bigger stories that use the whole town to tell jokes.

I'd recommend the episode "King-Size Homer" where Homer purposely gains weight to be over 300 lbs so he can qualify for disability and work from home. There's no lore or anything you need to know, all of the jokes are just about the dude being a disgusting fat ass.

The only Simpsons I think that is worth watching is a two-parter from 1994 or so called “Who Shot Mr. Burns”. It was funny then.

Season 9 was good, but the beginning of the end. 3-8ish were excellent. There's good stuff afterwards but it gets more and more hit and miss until it turns into total drivel. I hear on /tv/ that there are SOME good episodes in the recent years, but I have not bothered to check.

Since you brought it up someone in the Patrick Tomlinson thread floated the idea of you doing a reading of Christmas Carnage that might work well as a Gumroad thing.

Watch homers enemy. Emplemon talked about it but culturally it’s probably the most significant simpsons episode and the numbers show the series changed after it.
And like Emp, and I, pointed out, enjoying that episode requires you to have a previous understanding of the series. If Josh likes the show he should watch it, it shouldn't be the first thing he watches.

Seconding "King-Size Homer" as a standalone Simpsons episode and also want to recommend "El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)". It's funny and bizarre and heartwarming, and Johnny Cash is one of the best guest voices the show has had.

i have next to no knowledge of the series but i could respect it from an artistic standpoint. i will admit that emp highlighting the historical aspect made it more engaging.

Ultimately, to save time I recommend: Marge vs. The Monorail and Lisa Goes Gaga. But if you ever decide to watch more:

For the best, and to gain an understanding of the characters, watch:
And Maggie Makes Three
Last Exit to Springfield
Marge vs. the Monorail
Kamp Krusty

For the best:
Homer's Enemy (only after watching a few episodes to understand exactly why what happens in this episode is funny)
Lemon of Troy
The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show
You Only Move Twice

For the worst of the worst, watch:
Lisa Goes Gaga (the Lady Gaga episode, by far the worst episode of the series)
Bart vs. Itchy & Scratchy
Co-Dependent's Day
The Boys of Bummer (This is Homer's Enemy but done wrong)

and here's some of the most soulless episodes beyond the Lady Gaga shilling one:
The Musk Who Fell to Earth (Elon Musk shilling)
Every Man's Dream
The Drag Queen episode

Being unable to experience the perspective of someone who never saw the core Simpsons when it was contemporary, I can't watch it without some level of nostalgia clouding my judgement. I would expect some people to find it incredibly dull, with jokes that only seem tired now because the Simpsons created them, and others spun them in new directions and eventually drove them into the ground. Like playing Portal for the first time after a decade of "the cake is a lie."

It's no longer hilariously shocking to see a kid say "I'm Bart Simpson, who the hell are you."

Season six is the pinnacle of the series. Some good episodes in there (also Sneed)
