One of the problems in the US is that people expect year-round produce. Used to be if you wanted tomatoes in December then they came in a can. Now though the magic of shipping produce tens of thousands of miles you can have any item any time of the year. If you want local stuff then you're going to be tied to a growing season. Also the magic of shipping means places no longer grow a mix of items. Areas tend to hyper-focus on the couple crops that grow best in that one area. For instance California grows almost every US tomato, with Florida a distant second. Could you grow them in the rest of the gulf states, probably, but they don't seem to. Arkansas does rice, soy and cotton. Georgia does peanuts. Louisiana does soy, rice and sugarcane.

You can't get a fresh tomato at the grocery store. Ripe tomatoes don't survive transportation and so they're picked before they're ready and still green and then they redden up during the trip. If you want a tomato that actually tastes like something you have to go to the farmer's market or stick with the canned stuff.

in case it ever get's too cold here, my greenhouses have a small "oven" made with fire bricks that I will heat up. Itll keep them nice and warm.
 
Null's recollection of CHAZ ending because they "ran out of food" is incorrect. The mayor refused to end it as a middle finger to Donald Trump. However she was under intense pressure due to the amount of lawsuits that were coming in from small businesses in the area. Later the CHAZ people protested outside of her house. The day after they did that she ordered the police to enter in and break it up. And the police just walked in and swept the people out. They tried to "reclaim" the spot later but they were kicked out again.

The mayor of Seattle was deeply unpopular for letting CHAZ happen and she didn't run for re-election much like Tim Walz because there was no chance she'd win. She actually completely left politics after that. It later came out she actually destroyed government records surrounding how they handled CHAZ which later led to a successful lawsuit against the city. There are still lawsuits that are ongoing related to CHAZ. Like the family of one of the people who died attempted to sue the city by claiming the city was responsible for letting it happen.

True. I saw a drama set there, for obvious reasons it’s a grim place to work.
Pretty much everywhere in Europe, in supermarkets you have the option to buy the Spanish grown tomatoes which are only a few days old via refrigerated train and truck network, or you can get in-country ones, on the vine, in nicer packaging and cost 3x the price. Even in Iceland and northern Norway they manage to grow their own stuff under plastic (with heating and lights) due to cheap renewable energy.
In the US, this technology is used to grow weed instead.
