It's interesting that the "electronic girlfriend" depicted here looks shockingly similar to Morgan Webb of G4/TechTV fame from that same era.

Interesting? It’s completely natural. Deterministic, even. Like how a bunch of creatures keep independently evolving into crabs. Electronic girlfriends are going to independently resemble whoever one-shotted the designer as a teen boy by being an attractive woman talking anything video game related on the TV.

Josh asked if anyone pre 2000 had written anything as dystopian as a digital girlfriend. I remembered this like it was a fever dream and I have been looking for it for weeks. This is a clip from Max Knight: Ultra Spy, a failed TV pilot.

Silica/silicon gfs have been around a long time me'thinks.

gotta give the losers a booby prize.

Good luck on the software changeover Josh, here's to hoping that this isn't the start of a great adventure this week.

Oh yeah was I going to do a locals on it? Should I read it raw or read through it first
I think a raw read through could be a lot of fun!

GL with the file management changeover boss, I hope it isn't too tedious

Those old public access shows were something. It's like an old version of Twitch streams getting fucked with by trolls.
Dr Conley was a good one from back in the day. He was a racist black man who believed only blacks can go to heaven. People would call in and fuck with him all the time. It was a highlight of the week back then to call in and fuck with good ole Conley.

Vito's hour-long crashout with Dick is going to age like fine wine. It's only going to get better and you'll want to resample it again and again.

Did you know on the coast of NC there is a town called Half Moon, which is about 30 minutes away from another town called Sneads Ferry?
There is no fead store, but there is a church called The Potters Church.
I am stationed on Camp Lejeune, around Snead's Ferry. I got a laugh out of it, but the spelling is off. There are actually several feed stores, but no seed stores.

I'm sorry for the future super cancer you'll get from Camp Lejeune. Perhaps Snead is the original old English spelling of Sneed.

The timing of that Art Bell episode is wild. Truly one of those weeks where decades happen. I was real small then, and I think we forget how wild things were in the early 90s because things were so nice here while the second and third worlds were absolutely burning down while we tried to reorganize things to sure up the GAE.

RIP Art, we lost a real one.

On the robot girlfriend stuff, a lot of stuff from the 60s and 70s had that type of thing and themes similar to what we're seeing today about how technology hollows people out and destroys social connections. The book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" immediately comes to mind, I read a lot of my boomer dad's old books from when he was a kid when I was a kid, the last decade really has just been a re-tread of the 70s.

There's always the classic:
Not sure it was a dystopia though.
